Gold or Gems?

Assuming all other tiles being equal, which would you prefer in your capital's BFC?

Idk about you, but I've never lost a game where I got whales in my BFC. Can't say that about gold.

"Casino whales are the big money gamblers that spend huge amounts of cash on a single bet and are often found in Las Vegas casinos and online casinos."- casinowhale dot net

2nd result from Google search 'whale casino'.

And it was meant as a joke.

Civ translation: your gambling by going for whales instead of the possibility of gold/jewels.

If I get a coastal start and see whales, then I'm definitely gambling on the blubber boys.

Doesn't "all other tiles being equal" mean that we bracket the fact that gems imply jungles, or other considerations? :p Question is basically - would I swap my gold mine for a gem mine? Would I swap my gem mine for a gold mine? Given that question, I take baubly marvelous gems!!!

EDIT- ah, I see, extra-BFC terrain still under consideration ... hm ... gold is a happier sight then, no doubt.

Flat grass gems are a no brainer. I'd take river plains gold over grasshill gems though.

I could see a mild case for fail gold from Shwegie for having gold, but I rarely get around to it.

Key on flat gems is they usually come in bunches and are food neutral, which is very nice.

(I assume whales is a joke)

Whales are no joke lymond! The PETA people will paint your house in red for saying something like that! *lol*

@ the others: Thx for your explanations. I wasn't aware of the fact that "casino whale" is a term that's common in english language, in germany gambling is somehow prohibited, so while we have whales, those aren't found in casino's ^^ .

@ tu2n: My sentence was only partly ment as a joke, it was morely derived from the statement "diamonds are a girls best friend" and an alliteration of gems and girls, so I didn't understand your reaction, neither had the idea to google those terms on plus.

No sweat. I just googled it to see if it really was a fairly common usage or not. I was once a casino minnow so it was familiar to me but I didn't really expect there to be a casinowhales dot com.

I followed your joke with one of my own in acknowledgement that yours was funny by the way.

Flashback to civ II where whales were the ultimate squares. Those cities that had 4 in their fat cross. Tasty.

Sid Sushi anyone? :D

I like whales because they give production in the ocean, and they are less common. Sometimes, I don't like the terrain gold or gems are on, and occasionally gold shows up some place that I have another improvement, and then I have to change it. However, whales obsolete, which is a downside.

Gold has more potential to frustrate me, as sometimes you get 3 gold together in the middle of a desert with no food or even flood plains, so it's impossible to work any of them. I have never been annoyed by a gem tile, (apart from when the AI gets it first) so my vote goes to gems.

Depends on the Food. With 2 times wet-corn, you'll beg for Gold instead of Gems.

With 2 wet corn I'm likely sharing one of those with my 2nd city, and whipping heavily.

Wouldn't complain with either gold or gems, but +2 food is strictly superior to +2 hammers thanks to whipping.

Again, depends. Whipping is limited by Happiness, and in a scenario where the capital would really have 2 times Food and wouldn't share it, Gold gives more production with less risk of running into Unhappiness. 2 * wet Corn + Gems is basically uncontrollable and such a city would always run into unhappiness because it'd just grow too fast.

Whip off unhappy for infra and military, workers and settlers when whip anger causes issues.

Doesn't work. Infra and Military are too small to be whipped, Barracks are only 2pop, Granaries too, Chariots are even only 1pop. Producing Workers and Settlers would work because they eat the Food, but if the map is crouded and rushing is the only option, there's no sense in building those units must to prevent a city from growing into unhappiness. I find this (the "Chariot-rush" ) is a quite typical scenario.

But I'd rather have gems + plains-cow than gold + plains-cow.

Gold and gems are both fairly decent, but even better is world buildering yourself a town and printing press!
