GoobNES01: Fallout Update 18, Rise of Nationalism?
World Weekly News, December 31st, 1984
Historians detecting trend towards Nationalism
Historians and Analysts around the world are noticing a distinct trend in the world towards Nationalism, that is, pride in your nation, and regarding your nation and your nation's interests over all others. Nations like Russia, the USA, Poland, Finland, Norway, the USE, the UIS, and others have been seeing this trend represented in their Governments, as Nationalistic governments are getting elected more frequently. These Governments tend to be right-wing, but are not always. Historians do warn that this might lead to a situation of intense nationalism around the world, which will lead to military clashes. Others say that this trend will not continue, and the era of peace being enjoyed around the world will most likely continue, perhaps forever. Whatever happens, it is an interesting and unique phenomenon, say all Historians, and one that will have a significant impact on things to come.
Communism falls in Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, clashes in Albania
The Communist Regimes in Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria have been brought down, in both cases in large part to massive protests by students and the young against the Governments. The sheer numbers of protesters demanding change was simply too much to bear for the weak Bulgarian Regime, which simply crumbled, leaving Bulgaria in a near state of anarchy. Russian and USE forces moved in to restore order, along with Greek forces, and they are now forming an interim Bulgar Government to hold elections. This poor nation has never been very stable, and used to be heavily dependent on Russia before Communism fell in that nation as well. In Czechoslovakia, it was not so much of a revolution, as the very Liberal Communist Administration in that nation simply holding elections, which resulted in the people choosing a Capitalist Government that is conducting radical changes in Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia has always been quite a unique Communist nation in that it had a good economy, a relatively high standard of living, and was very free, with many civil liberties. Now it is a democracy, and while its economy is down for the time being, Foreign investors are likely lined up to come back to the nation and conduct business. In Albania, the same student protest as was done in Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria was tried, but it failed miserably and bloody as the Police and Military dispersed the crowds by force, killing upwards of 300 demonstrators demanding democracy, accuses Amnesty International. The regime has locked down the country, with the Military firmly in control, imposing a curfew, and suspending many civil liberties. Albania's economy has been severely damaged, as many nations suspended trading with the poor Communist regime. The current situation is one of martial law, with most foreigners fleeing the country. Diplomatic staff has been severely limited by almost all nations, and diplomatic ties cut in some cases. The situation remains dire.
Pro-Russian Polish Nationalist party sweeps Polish Elections!
In Poland today, it was a surprising win for the Polish Nationalistic, pro-Russian Liberty Party. This party was the only one in Poland's political scenes advocating for Poland to become strong and free by itself, by building a strong military and strong economy. It also advocated for Poland to become closer to Russia, with whom Poland experienced some rough times nearly 15 years ago, as it accused Russia of trying to entice a Communist Revolution in Poland. The Liberty Party also raised the alarm bells over Germany, Poland's neighbor, which has moved far to the right in recent years. They claimed that Droeger might have designs on Poland, and that Russia, which is, as they pointed out, a fully democratic nation AND a superpower, would help Poland if Poland needed help against the Germans. It seems that time has yet to heal this particular wound. Poland will likely approach Russia in the near future on items of trade, military pacts, and general cooperation.
Intense Hurricanes devastate Florida, Southeastern USA
1984 will go down in history as the worst year for Hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea ever. A grand total of 12 Hurricanes hit the region, which is not the worst, but these were very powerful storms. There were other smaller systems, like tropical storms, but those did not do much damage, besides some flooding. There was no less then 3, 4 according to some researchers, category 5 hurricanes, 2 of which hit the USA, and the other Mexico. Florida was the worst hit, with no region of this panhandle being spared. The damage did not stop there, Eastern Mexico was hit, Jamaica was severely hit, as well as many island in the Greater Antilles. The USA called in 2 of its Aircraft Carriers at the end of it to start the clean-up, which is rare. About 2,000 people were directly killed by hurricanes, only about 100 in the USA thanks to evacuations, and the USA's modern infrastructure, but in the other hit regions, people were not so lucky. 30 billion dollars of damage (OOC 3 ecos to rebuild) was done to the USA, which has bankrupted some Insurance Companies, and left many others with massive bills. Armies in all the regions are helping to clean-up. Scientists say that they cannot explain why the season was so bad here, it was regular in other hurricane prone-parts of the world, but they do say that this could be linked to a distinct warming trend in the world.
Heavy Flooding devastates parts of China
China has been hit by the worst flooding on record, and this is entirely due to rain levels which have been way, way above normal. Heavy Rains prompted rivers to overflow their banks, and flood low-lying areas. Farmers, and others, have been forced to flee their livelihood, and flee, and are only now returning to see the damage. Aver 3 million were forced from their homes at one point, which was a major problem for the authorities. Chinese authorities reacted with the largest response the world has seen, moving thousands of trucks and vehicles into the region, and calling in the army. Now that the waters have receded, experts are warning that this could be a trend, and that China needs to spend heavily to ensure that the infrastructure is in place to stop this sort of event in the future. About 12 billion (OOC - 1 eco) was needed to start rebuilding efforts.
Heat Wave hits Eastern Europe
In a rare event, a short-lived heat Wave, lasting only 3 weeks during the height of summer, hit Eastern Europe, bring humidity, and causing temperatures to soar. It hit Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Southwestern Russia particularly hard, and temperatures climbed to 37 degrees celcius, breaking records. It did not last long, and people seemed to enjoy it as a relaxing break from the usual cold weather in that part of the world. Weather Experts did not come to any conclusion as to why this event occurred.
Euro becoming currency of choice as more countries adopt new currency
The Euro, the proposed United European Currency by the USE has been adopted and is in use by 5 more countries, as Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Poland adopt this currency. The Euro is quite popular, not only because it is quite valuable and has been doing well in Financial Markets (OOC Because I and many of you do not even try to understand these types of things, I am NOT going to include them in this game. Having a standardized currency is good for business though, and will make your economies go up, from what I understand.). but also because it is so useful. People from one European Country can go to another, and not have to do the dreaded currency exchange. The Republic of Cyprus is holding a referendum early next year on whether to adopt this currency, but many say it will pass. Bulgaria might adopt it in the future, but there are few countries left in Europe to adopt it, since the USE swallowed many of them up. (OOC Nice job, Josef, you swallowed so many countries, there are not many left to adopt the Euro)
Member of the British Royal Family regains the Throne of the UK
The British Royal Family lives on, so it seems, after Historians, and several radio and TV documentaries, found a surviving member of the British Royal Family. In a ceremony, King Mark I was crowned the King of the United Kingdom. He, of course, has no real powers, but he is once again King in the UK, and only the UK, which adopted a Constitutional Monarchy system of Government, different then other states of the USE, with the support of the USE. The English suffered the worse after World War III, and were nearly wiped out, but are now returning to rebuild and live in their homeland again. Their new King will probably bring back many memories of better times before WWIII. Nations that used to recognize the British Monarchy are doing so again. SEAR recognizes the King as their Head of State, and Acadia, which has changed both those nation's system of Government. Rumor is swirling that the former Canadian Provinces that are now part of the USA are considering such a maneuver, but that would cause some serious Constitutional issues in the USA, as, legally, those former Canadian provinces cannot consider the UK Monarch to be their Head of State. The support is there by a majority of the people in those states, but it would create a significant crisis if those 5 states even tried to do such a thing. BC would likely be the one to lead the way, being the more rebellious state, according to analysts.
Struggling nation of Benelux to hold Referendum on future.
Benelux, which has struggled from crisis to crisis since its inception, is set to hold a referendum on its future. The nation, a union of Denmark and Belgium, has endured political, financial, and military crisis since its inception. Its economy has lagged, its military and people divided, and its politics anything but stable. Polls should that over 60% of Beneluxans are unhappy with the union, but also a majority of Beneluxans do not want to go back to their old countries. A National Referendum will be held next year, and the options shall be to remain the nation as is, to split back to Belgium and Denmark, or to seek a union with a surrounding nation, probably the USE, but perhaps Germany. Polls show Beneluxans evenly split on the proposals, but the last looks to be the one that has the most support. We will keep you updated on the situation.
Korea, Mexico conduct more Nuclear Tests
Defying International Condemnation, and International Sanctions, Korea and Mexico are continuing testing their Nuclear Arsenal, and sending a message to the world that they are prepared to kill millions if they are attacked. Korea and Mexico are in a close union, both of those nations being Stalinist Communist nations, with the military firmly in charge of the nation. Korea, which has around 35-40 nuclear Weapons, tested a nuke on a small island of its coast by firing it with a short range missile. The test worked perfectly, but caused Japan to go on high alert, and prepare for the worst. Korea has since promised to inform nations of its Nuclear Tests, but few expect them to honour that promise. Meanwhile, Mexico, which has around 5 Nuclear Weapons, tested 2 low-yield devices. These are crude, small bombs, but still deadly. They detonated one in a remote desert in their interior, and one on a small island in the Pacific. Tensions have ratcheted between Mexico and the USA, and both nations have sealed and militarized their common border. In the USA, many are saying that the Mexican Regime should be pre-emptively attacked, since Mexico threatens America's security. Republicans are the ones leading the charge to war, and officials are beginning to beat the war drums. Polls show Americans are wary of invading Mexico, because it would not only be a long and costly war, in terms of lives, that is, but it would look like America was being an Imperialist Power. Also, Democrats note that Mexico has no short range missiles capable of delivering those Nukes to an American City.
SEAR formed!
A new nation has some into being, and that is the SEAR, or South East Asian Republic. It is a union between Papua New Guinea and Australia, and it creates a fairly powerful nation. The reasoning for this new nation is that it will be better able to repair the damage done to Australia, but also be a significant Military power, which should stifle Suharto's ongoing ambitions to reclaim PNG as part of Indonesia. The first Government elected is a fairly centrist, moderate government, with a PNG leader. SEAR has also announced that they will recognize the UK Monarch as their Head of State again.
Chinese Supreme Court strikes down anti-Gambling Law
In China today, a stunning revelation has taken place. The Chinese anti-Gambling Laws have been declared illegal, and unconstitutional by the Chinese Supreme Court, and thus no longer taking effect, making Gambling legal in China. However, polls show that 65% of Chinese think that Gambling is evil, and should be banned, so this SC decision puts the Chinese population in conflict with its top legal experts. In their decision, the Supreme Court urged the Government to make Laws making Gambling legal for adults only, and only in certain places. Also, they urged the Government to put restrictions on the forms of Gambling, and times, and such. Gambling has been illegal in China for a long time, but some individuals and companies have challenged that, saying that, according to the Chinese Constitution, Gambling cannot be made illegal. The Chinese SC reluctantly agreed, from a legal standpoint, and it is now up to the Government to try and do something about this reversal of fortunes.
