got dsl, wanna host full game, super map(30000 sq.) everything optimized by expert

when I heard the call "Whats this Beauty game, looks great" my heart went like ice. As I was trying to sleep it was doubly concerning. I told him to stop, he'd played a few moves in so some damage was done but not a lot. At this stage he was not in the game.... I didn't think to hide it on my machine, the sooner he gets a monitor {during the week actually} the sooner my box will once again be sacrosanct. If you have recieved your package then you also have the map on your box. As I know something of Hartsters playing style {or lack thereof :) } I'm not too concerned about him having played a few turns, although maybe it should be put to a vote.

do not listen to this raving lunatic! he has not been paying attention to the massive efforts to scrap together a simple game with 7 people from wherever I can get them and so now he proposes that I get double that number! AND TO TIMEZONE COORDINATE THEM!! (HAHAHHHHAAHHAHAHAHAA) dont worry general i laugh with you, because surely you must've been in a burstingly sporty mood to suggest such a thing!!

As for devotion, 18 hours is not needed daily! please general, i am only trying to hook up an honest game and exagerations will not help to those who are unsure of my purposes...no, I only need such hours to choose from, of course the playing time will not be so long (though long enough for the marathoners to be content) or so frequent as everyday (I have big windows but the air in here even grows stale and i may even grow bored of civ for a couple days (no, forbid the thought!) to stretch out my legs nice and thoroughly without seeing a compoter screen for a little while, but I think, truly that we shall all eat our words and want to play as if rabid upon getting into this game...there has never been any like it before!!!

On considering the matters at hand I refer to an earlier post of mine - although the info sent through by Nic was full and informative, I feel the civilopedia is the best way to properly come to grips with ALL the changes. Perhaps everyone should look at it - unfortuantely starting the game is the only way. So if each person 'registers' their civ on this forum then opens it up with that civ only, and not play a single move, they will have a chance to peruse the 'pedia fully and as an unavoidable bonus see their starting terrain. This method definitely provides temptation to peoples honesty, but we all know we could open it and reveal the entire map {as in any multi session MP game} so honesty is paramount as it is. This would mean everyone is on the same level {except poss hartster, who as I stated earlier has only a very minor advantage that will be wiped out by the quality of players he is up against}. If such is to be done the taken civs are -

Russians
Germans
{English?} - I reiterate a vote is an option if there is dissent

Do not act on this yet, wait for Nics assent, yet I feel this is the best way to fully get acquanted with the game and negate any percieved advantages.

I have not the time or patience to read all these rambling posts, I got the package though I have not read through everything yet. There are an awful lot of rule changes, many and most I find unnecessary, still it will be a fun experience to play and even though I will certainly have to adjust my play to deal with the changes I'm sure it won't cramp my style too much. It seems some of you have more intimate knowledge of the map than me but its all good. You can come to my continent but if you do make sure your packing some major heat because most of your boys won't be going home alive! ;) Don't worry, I'll leave the caravans intact :)

Let me know when the scedule comes out. You know my hours, if you need to set some daytime hours (before 8pm EST) I may still be able to play given enough advanced notice.

One more thing : A few very direct questions about your scenerio.
(1) How long does it take a settler to build a road?
(2) How long does it take a settler to build irragation?
(3) How long does it take a settler to mine a hill?

Thanks!

Dearest Nicosar,

I have received your schedule documents, and admit I am amused by your handwritten notes, which, despite the ease of using word or some such program, does add a bit of a classic touch to the game.

Given you are using Pac time, my schedule does not properly reflect my availability ... (pac time)

Monday thru Thursday: 5 pm - 12 am
Friday: 5 pm through Sunday: 12 am

I hope this helps. It seems Trev's time zone is a bit of a mess, other than that all seems well so far.

I love it how Dr_eamer waits till i go to bed then he writes up whatever is on his mind...the fact is that dr_eamer is not all he is cracked up to be he may understamd world politics but he unlike me has stuff to do with his life i on the other hand will devote all my time to this game, I saw one starting position played acouple of moves so therefore I will if no-one objects be the english...
MY TIMES AVAIL
24/7
i believe if people are really into playing this they will have more than 6 or 7 hours a day, so everyone if u have holiday saved up take it off now so we can play I personally am up for 14to 16 hours on and 8 off and so on...
also Dreamer is agnsty because he will not be here for (hopefully) the game starting

I am glad that our verbose host has the ability to see the difference between a valid suggestion and one made with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. Of course that was joke, and the reaction was priceless!!

But on to more serious matters.......

I am about to start reading "The Packet" with my thinking cap on. I am going to have questions, and I am going to start posting all of them in this thread, as others may have the same questions.

My first question sort of touches on Narz's question regarding settler/engineer working speeds.

Are any and all rules not mentioned in "The Packet" set to the game defaults?

On to my reading........

I believe I have founf the answer to Narz's question. The 13th rule down on page 1 of "The Packet" reads as follows.....

"All terrain improvements take roughly twice as long to build, though some take slightly more or less than this figure."

A little vague. Exact number of turns would be nice to know. The amount of time to build a fortress included. A table of exactly what special resources give you would be nice to have as well. :D

i thought i covered all the rules, plus there is one more page coming with a couple unit changes that have two mistakes, and even though the mistakes are technically not typos since those are also mistaked in the scenraio itself, which ive already changed in mine, the master version, but you do not need to bother with inyours, the notes were copied from the scenario which was itself erred in this respect; all of this which is to say that these are not actually changes but intended originally. there is also an extension to the honor code which includes many things I previously forgot out of the rush to set up everything else.

Do not think they are minor ones because they come last, in fact some of these are the most important!

as for narz and the general wishing to know the EXACT rate, (hehehe) i have told you in the notes, good fellows, that all terrain improvements are approximately double; i would tell you, without hesitation or second thought, what you request, but since this seems most childish to me, i will have a bit of fun; tell me either of you, can you tell me EXACTLY how long it took a settler to mine a hill BEFORE i cahnged it? How about irrigation on a, lets say, swamp to convert it to grassland, since you werent really specific about that (please, please, heheh, this is not an invitation to demand more detail!)? Can you tell me these things EXACTLY without referring to the game? And what if I were to tell you that the numbers in the editor dont quite respond to the actual game time it takes? I dont fully understand the algebra myself, only knowing that if you double those numbers somehow the game numbers are double, so please, cannot we leave this be?

It almost, actually seems that you ask out of frustration, unless i mistake your tone, as if getting every possible little detail is going to help you understand the overall concepts of this game any better...civilization is a game of concepts, that is it, except worked out onto a board so graceful as to give the illusion that they have a physical presence; so, my fellow Narz, if you are really so accustomed to this game we all know and cherish then shouldn't you know the irrigation/mining ratios so good that doubling them in your head would give you an instant idea of the new ratios? Of course, the piddling little bits that I have added in order to make the statement of 'approximately' necessary are prefect only to the mind of the creator, i should hope, making only a difference in my own mind, as i tend to adorn perfectionism onto those things i hold precious to me, since they might as well be exactly double the former rates.

I shouldn't even have to mention this, but for any of you who also find most of the rules unnecessary, i really could not care less... you are in my domain now, under certain contracts of honor which, should you betray, will leave you unable to ever mention yourself in this website again with any integrity to your name, and i expect EVERYONE to read EVERY page four times if the first three have not allowed you comprehension, and then I expect you to remember and follow EVERY single rule, no matter how much your worthless opinion finds it unnecessary, as if it was tatooed from birth on your forehead.

By the way......:

EXACTLY 8:12 MINUTES UNTIL THE DISSOLUTION OF THE PLAYER KNOWN AS DDAY LEST HE SHOULD COMPLY WITH MY DEMAND.

As for the 'rambling pages' i hope you do not mean the length of my replies which I would just as quick term 'thorough' since there is practically no faith in this table (that is to change, trust me, i will garner respect with an iron fist coated with feathers) i have had to explain EVERYTHING, and that in laymans terms, and also hope that you are equally thorough despite most of your's habits of uninfoming brevity if you are to survive a game of this caliber.

I just read dreamer's note, and i am glad he had the respect to leave it up to me; there will be no further opening of the game (period>). The first two instances were under my watchful eye and the third apparently hasn't caused too much dipleasement, trusting the word of the doctor. As for the rest of you who would quibbingly continue these meaningless arguments about the 'advantages' you seem to think those 'privileged' few have obtained then i only ask you to try and and find a better excuse for yourself in case you should lose then a couple players seeing their starting city locations making a difference.

The father has mentioned that my schedule does not properly reflect his true and more leniant schedule, and this is true, but it is equally not my mistake either....

In the Father's post with his e-mail and schedule he only stated an indefinite time period extending, I had to assume for unassuming voracity's sake, only to the end of each day with said timeframe. I had a feeling that this would appear in error, though, if past things may be analyzed, it was actually the correct information given to me. I had a feeling ( a good one for once) that the fathers times were much more open as im sure he meant to imply and, glad that he clarified the matter, will make a new schedule assuming you, father, give your schedule to me in pacific time as the note in the parantheses would suggest. It would be a shame if another round of toiling with paper and numbers should be scrapped for further lack of clarity.

And yes, trevor's times look slightly difficult but for an older gentleman they shine with brilliance in comparison to the greedily invoked famish occuring directly beneath his feast...

my advantage only being acouple of moves into what is going to be a massice event, and game that will take a good 150 hours to finish..u say advantage Swartz, no way thats if i even remembered any of it considering i had been awake for 20hours i find ure statement alittle much of an overeaction. and thank you Nicosar for you understanding and knowledge of people and which of these people can make honest mistakes..
hartster

I meant no harm or accusation in my post hartster.....just stated an obvious fact. I never used the word advantage. I am not overly concerned, just being observant. I have no way of knowing how far your foray into the BEAUTY map has gone. I have know way of knowing that our verbose host has not played many a game on the BEAUTY map. It is all trust. Trust that the honor spoken of in these posts is real. I am quick to give trust. It is my nature. It has bitten me in the ass from time to time, but I still trust first and distrust after I have a reason. I have NO reason not to trust anyone here. MP games require it, as we have no eyes in each others abodes.

I just read the schedule sent by Nicosar. Now I can truly see his scheduling delema. I wish that I could help more, but my daily routine is quite rigid. And on the subject of scheduled game start-up....am I correct in assuming that due to dr_eamers vacation, we won't be starting before October 1st?

No, it just might mean that we'll start with 6 players and not 7and then perhaps restart if we have only played a couple seesions and not gotten too far so that he can play upon return, but that is just a suggestion, we will discuss it further, but I dont even want to hear about it until we're playing. Besides, now that I have no further obligations to this game except waiting and possibly recruiting new players I have been busy contacting many foreign players, some of which may actually show up, we'll see.

Hey Nico, until this thing begins, how about a one on one matchup some evening (including right now) just for fun? You can choose the map size, difficulty level and barbarian level. Standard rules though. I am curious to test your strength. :)
