GOTM-05 Pre-Game Discussion

Like they did in CivIII, I wonder if they removed the Settler as one of the things you can get from a hut.

It's not possible to change that in the save file. You would have to download and install a mod.

Bummer about the "no Settler from hut" requiring a mod. Are you sure about that? I suppose we were playing "modded" CivIII for GOTM's, I just don't recall.

Hopefully the following will happen:
1. The GOTM staff and the players will agree that Settlers and Workers from huts are too much of an advantage for those that get them.
2. Somebody (I'm not a modder or I would) will figure out how to remove them from hut possibilities.

Those posts about the hut should be deleted. ....

Huts give things.
They give better "things" when opened with a Scout.
The contents of a hut is random - everyone will experience different results.

Like what? That there ARE huts? ......

Moderator Action: Paragraph deleted. Spoiler information repeated. You really make it hard work to remove the spoilers you are complaining about when you repeat them yourselves !!!

I for one don't agree with that. Civ is a game that has built-in randomness. Lots of times you get lucky, lots of times you don't. Some of those random things can make a significant difference, and part of learning to play Civ is learning to cope with whatever happens, good or bad.

Examples: In the last GOTM, it was purely a matter of chance whether Alexander expanded East or West. If he expanded East then the human player was (pre-galleys) pretty well boxed in. Much bigger effect on the game then whether you get a settler from a hut, methinks... Similarly (and the following is based on hypothetical games, nothing to do with any GOTM map), a random decision by the AI can determine whether you get beaten to an important wonder (the pyramids), and a couple of turns can make the difference whether you get to the only nearby horse-tile on your continent first. Come to that a semi-random decision on whether you moved your scout East or North can make a difference about whether you even knew in time that that horse existed. And there's some randomness in whether a barb city appears in the FOW - a barb city in a key location can slow you down a *lot*. Those people who want to stop huts from giving settlers and workers - would you also want to stop all these other random things from happening? What about having an early settler killed by barbs? (yes it can happen, occasionally even to guarded settlers).

Besides huts can give you techs, that can in some circumstances be a lot more significant than a settler. (To an experienced player, a free settler might be perhaps 6-8 turns of production in *one* city plus two forests. A free tech might save that same player 15 turns of civ-wide research).

In the end what matters is how you play the game overall. Sure, some good or bad luck at the start can easily hurt or help your growth. And it can make a difference to your final score, but then it's inevitable that your score will be at least slightly influenced by random events outside your control - barb huts or no barb huts.

I think it will be funny to see how many people go for strange victories with this map like cultural or diplomatic to get a little icon next to their name.

I was gonna make a good run at real time elapsed win, but my stupid neighbor knocked on my door and needed help getting a compressor out of their truck. Then a beer consumption followed. Sigh.

When's the 1st spoiler?

Well, I think I'm going to enter this one! :D

What makes you say cultural and diplo are strange victories? Ofcourse on Warlord/great plains domination and conquest can be achieved fast. But for instance cultural profits from warlord opponents just as much. And surely the leader traits are as good for cultural as for domination/ conquest, wouldn't you agree?

It's not that Diplo or Cultural victories are strange, it's just that I'm guessing 95% of the entries will be Conquest or Domination. This GotM won't be about whether you win, but how and how quickly you can win. I may go through the game again just so see if I can launch a spaceship in the 1700's.

Moderator Action: Post deleted. I hope you guys are getting as bored with this mantra as I am with typing it, then maybe you'lll all cease and desist.

PLEASE DON'T POST HERE ONCE YOU'VE STARTED THE GAME

Without trading techs with AIs ( probably their science will be like dust after medieval era ... :mischief: ) this is not such an easy job to do ... ;)

I'm one of those people that does that for fastest finishes. :D :crazyeye: I've actually been chosing my victory condition based upon what I thought the least of the 'god players' would be going for. Of course, this is partially because in Civ III I missed the conquest fastest finishes three times by under 5 turns, including once by one turn. As posted earlier, I'll be going for Diplomatic this game. I always try to post my planned victory condition in case someone wants to go head-to-head on it. Of course, game circumstances could always change it, but at least its a plan.

I think in this game if you wanted conquest you could research Archery and take out 2-3 of your opponents by starting with nothing but a couple scouts for GH's and to fix your opponents followed by an onslaught of archers. I suspect the fastest finish conquest won't even build a settler, but just use their captured rival cities to keep building to take out other rivals. Since I just did conquest I won't be trying this, but have done it in random games I created and practice games downloaded.

yup, for fastest conquest, the problem is how quick you can get your units to your opponents, not how fast you can build the units

horses would make it pretty darn easy and pretty darn quick so i seriously doubt they are in the first city radius

Personally, i want more from gotm then 1-2 hours play so i think i'll go for fastest spaceship - tho that probably wont take that long either

Wow. This month I might actually end up submitting a victory. I've been going for conquest/domination in my last few non-GOTM games, so I think I'll try spaceship this time. See how fast I can do it.

There's a rule? :mischief:

Ainwood is on a piece of wet string somewhere with very intermittent access to the Internet. As soon as he manages to send a clue about what the spoiler criteria are I'll post a spoiler thread.

Thanks AlanH, I was wondering the same thing. I had noticed that Ainwood hadn't been active recently and I wondered if he was gonna be on to post it or not.
