GOTM #10 *Spoilers* Thread

Well I finally got some time to finish and in the 20 century was presented with the fact that Paris was going to trigger a cultural victory:) .

The only way to continue to lower my score was to abandon this great city:eek: .

The pride of France and the envy of the world contained:
The Hanging Gardens
The Great Library
The Great Wall
Sistine Chapel
Shakespear's Theater
JS Bach's Cathedral
Universal Suffrage
Hoover Dam
Theory of Evolution
The United Nations
The Manhatten Project
Heroic Epic
Military Academy
The Pentagon
Intelligence Agency

To raze this city would have been an injustice so I let it take it's rightful place in my history. With a score also at 2*** Col and I will have to wait to see who came lower.

This is the first game I've tried and need some advice on score prediction. I'm about to trigger domination in 1080. Is that a good finish or is milking more rewarding with a 1000 years of "history" to come?

This map shows the French Empire about to research Democracy prior to downsizing the American presence on Pangea X. Unlike most posts I seem to have a few more small settlements in my empire. Never had any respawns unlike cracker, but only 3 leaders so far.

Excuse my poor attempts to post these pictures but I edited it 4 times without able to change my post:cry:

Ozymandius,

A domination victory in 1080 with 1962 would give you 5610 points.

1962 + (2050 - 1080) * 3 (Regent)

My guess is you might be able to milk it up to around 9000 if your willing to play for another 1000 years.

I looked at your pic's and for a second thought they were mine...

SirPle has posted a score prediction program under utilities. I have only used it once, but it seem accurate. There are some limitations to it as you can imagine, but it is gives milling some sense.

If been milking since 340 AD, currently in 1390AD. For the first time my score really is growthing faster than my early win bonus.

This is my first milking attempt ever and have much to thank SirPleb with his maximising your score thread!

I also had no respawns.

Hi guys,

I am looking at your posts and pics and still cannot motivate myself at playing at SUCH A LOW LEVEL.

It is by far to easy. I have played until 560 AD and at that time I had beaten the Aztecs and Iroquis but then the computer crashed. I then forgot to load the autosave and save it so the next day I could only see the autosaves of my cousin's game. Tough luck. My latest save was 130 AD and at that time I was only finishing the Aztecs. Since I already knew the map I could theoretically play again even if I knew were the saltpeter was. (anyway the computer knew too.

BUT I COULDN'T. It's too easy. At 130AD the game was already won. I consider that playing along would be similar to milking the game. TOO TEDIOUS and TOO BORING.

Sorry if I was too harsh and actually I really appreciate reading what you people did.

Yndy

In 340AD, I've killed or crippled every one. I agree it is quite a change from playing emperor/deity, but you must remember that there are some other good players playing as well. So, the challenge is not the AI, they sucked, but the other players and trying to outscore them.

Personally, I would have loved a more difficult games, but scoring is interesting. It changes your whole approach to the game. Suddenly hospistals if high on your list of research.

Good job :goodjob:

You are right and as I was just browsing the changes in the GOTM therad I think a new score system coul reward early finishes by high scores. I hate milking. My computer too....:D

Well a couple of firsts - my first attempt at GOTM and my first post to the bulletin board. Its amazing what you can achieve with a couple of days off work :D

I achieved a domination victory with what I consider to be a good score. I usually play on Regent level so this was a good start on GOTM. I have played at Monarch before and the best I have done is lose a fairly close space race, most of the time I get my behind whupped :spank: . Quite interestingly this turned out to be a bit of a warfest. I am normally quite a peaceful player and like to go for spaceship, cultural or UN victory. However with 8 civs on one continent I decided that just wasn't viable. After getting a settler with my first goody hut I was in the lead in points and power and pretty much stayed that way all through to the end.

Anyway here are my thoughts on a couple of the themes in this thread.

Goody Huts There were so many they added a huge amount of luck to the early game play. In my main game I got fairly lucky in that I got a settler with the first hut and a couple of techs in the other and only had a couple of surprised barbs attacking me. However when played through again as a one city challenge, virtually every hut contained barbs or if not just gave me a map :(

Great Leaders I seem to have been much more lucky than most here, although I was in a state of vitually continuous war throughout the game :ar15: . I got my first GL early doors and following some of the advice on this site created an army so I could go down the heroic epic route. I have to say I'm no fan of armies so this is not something I would normally do (although the new 1.29f blitz capability of armies has put them up in my regards). I didn't get any more GLs for a quite a long time, but in my final push to wipe out the Germans, Iriquois and Russians (and so achieve my global domination) I spawned 5 more GLs!! :) . With them quite a lot of WoWs were completed in record time.

As an aside, other than being a good ego trip, is the ability to rename your elite GL units for anything? Do these units have any more or less chance of squeezing out another GL than regular elite units?

After seeing Ribannah post about his OCC game I thought I would have a go myself. Well I won a cultural victory in 1974 (only 200 years or so after Ribannah) but I think it was more luck than judgement! At the end I was surrounded by the US and the Russians who had Mech Inf and Tanks, while my best defenders were a few Musketeers I had squeezed out during a 20 turn phase when on of the Civs took pity on me and traded me Saltpeter. So hats off to Ribbanah :goodjob: I'm not sure how you did it, once my Gt Library had been rendered obsolete I fell behind in tech so quickly - at the end of the game I was researching Nationalism while everyone else was building spaceships  . Luckily I had built enough WoWs in the very early stages that my culture score accumulated quickly enough to get me to the 20,000 mark. Anyway, it could have made a good entry for the low score challenge (apologies if OCCs are not allowed in that, I haven't read through all the threads here yet!), I had a score of 400 odd - I can't see how it is possible to win the game with a lower score than that!

So..... forget a milked score and go for a fastest finish. If it that easy go for a quick conquest and get a medal:cooool:

q33555, welcome to the GOTM. I hope you enjoy your games and reading about others.

A unit which produces a GL will not give you another one. This was an addition to the latest patch as a way of distinguishing them.

PHilip,

What I meant is that I have virtually won the game by 130 AD and I'm not interested in going along more. I'm not into the challange of getting the highest score or a medal.

I want a challanging game for me, and after I won it I want to see if and how the others did it.:scan:

It is by far to easy.

If it wasn't GOTM, I would have quit early. I got a settler from a hut in 3750 BC, then the Great Leader Napoleon in 2710 BC used for the Forbidden Palace in 1325 BC. It was fun racing to settle the western provinces, and there was a little culture war in the west against the albeit weak Aztecs. But the wars were so easy, this is the only thing I could find to say about them.

I never expected Napoleon to return! So, I'm glad I played it out. I planted vast forests for something to do in the endgame.

Did anyone else move the settler to the hills and delay Paris till 3950. When it expands it pops a settler and a tech. Other Goodie Huts provided: warrior, warrior, pottery, warrior code, barbarians, mysticism, warrior. Only got 3 GL's the first in 500 AD. GA started in 610.

Is 5,000 points a good or mediocre result? I can kill off the last civ in 1,100 and I have too many small "cities" to make milking attractive option.

Yes, that is exactly what I did in my OCC game. I did it for the defensive bonus, but it turned out to be a very productive site for Paris. :)

I haven't played Civ3 in a while, and this is my first time playing TGOM seriously. I d/l the new patch and the AI is very strange. I have been doing great, thanks to the low difficulty and great starting location. I grabbed four lux's early on and went to war with the Aztecs to secure two more, the ivory hill and that one dye near their capitol. Ever since then everybody has been annoyed at me. I really don't understand it. Especially since everyone went to war with the Aztecs when they started to lose!

And, all of a sudden, Russians demand some BS, I tell them to shove it, war! English do the same, war! Then Germany does the same, war! I'm in the mid-middle ages with my knights crushing Catherine, who seems content to send Swordsmen, Archers, Spearmen, and Horsemen my way! Oh no! The war caught me off guard, but fortunately I was beginning to build my forces to invade anyway so I was not totally unprepared. It has, though, been very annoying and I'm just gonna keep pumping out knights until I get military tradition. Thankfully, I'm a little ahead in tech.

It just hasn't made any sense! The AI is always mad and trades are very wacky. It seems like anything other than 5GP and a World Map is an INSULTING deal for a tech! Wow, A WORLD MAP!?!??!?!? How useful it is for me to see how you're building up your infrastructure. Oo0o0o0o... Look at that road... and that irrigated grassland! Fool. With this new intelligence I shall strike thee down with great wrath and indignation!

Be happy, Serg!
I got my first GL past 800AD after having crushed 3 civs and won numerous battles with elite units :( .
