I guess I just wasn't thinking about the tech path. I usually do CB first. I did actually build the temple in Moscow in 3250BC. I guess that could have been a trireme and then the settler could have been completed in 2850BC. Maybe I could have gone a lot faster.

Why did you still have 4 warriors in Republic? Were you not done with hut hunting by then?
I really only used one warrior for hut hunting. The other warriors were in Moscow, St.Pete (2 sqaure island) and Minsk (3 square island). I just didn't see the need to disband them. The cities were producing 8 shields, 1 more shield would not have made much difference. On the other hand, I probably would have been much better off supporting an extra trireme than a warrior.

The better question is why I didn't disband them before 1000 AD. I didn't disband the warrior in Moscow until 1120 AD. I am not even sure when I disbanded the others, but it wasn't until at least 1500 AD. I guess I just wasn't thinking about how safe the cities were with the AIs so far away.

As you can see, I am behind Ali by 20 techs (and for some forgotten reason I was delaying the RR thru Corp path). But I had 9 cities on the Big Land with roads into the Babs and USA for faster van deliveries, and for conquest later.

I decided against playing isolationist. My current plan includes trade, some possible conquest, and landing. My current thinking, which may change based on the situation, for the "some possible conquest" part is to:
1. Buy choice cities of the my allies on the huge continent (Babylonians, Egyptians, and Americans). I bought my first city, an Egyptian one, in 1760. Babylonians are currently in democracy so I cannot buy any of theirs. I have no idea about the American government yet.
2. If I can get there fast enough, battle Mongols and Greeks, possibly Germans for some of their choice cities.

Thanks; I guess half of the new cities were by conquest. I had enough engineers to make RRs almost at will, and enough boats and artillery to take a few cities each turn. Also, the terrain was so nice, and vans payments so large, that it was easy to re-double my mainland cities every 14 turns (std ICS growth rate).

Well, it sounds like you have several good options. I was a little surprised at your move North though, because you seemed to be doing OK in the south, maybe even near a launch. But if you want a great gotm score, or super-trade, you probably have to expand.

My game is going very slowly in real time turns. I have not reached 1800 yet. Picking off a few cities of Egyptians degenerated into active warfare with them and I eventually had to wipe them out. Meanwhile, my growing technology caused widespread pollution in cities which were neither very large nor producing a lot of shields and at some point I had 7 polluted tiles. Instead of building space ship parts I had to build a lot of recycling centers delaying the space race. In fact, Egyptians beat me to Apollo, and Babylonians started the space race before I did. Now that I have joined the space race, it is going rather slowly because the war effort is draining my otherwise rich treasury. I am at active war with Greeks, Mongols, and Germans. I just took over Mongol capital.

Thanks for the detailed log haleewud. I just got past +1800 and will post another log piece soon. I am at war with Greeks, Germans, and Mongols. Mongol homeland is mine and German homeland has been invaded. Most Greek cities on huge island are mine but their homeland remains intact. Babylonians are still in Democracy and thus immune to bribery. They have also kept the peace. Americans have also kept the peace but a few of their out lying cities have been bribed away. I have a launchable minimal space ship and aiming to build a full one. My current goal is to end with a full space ship. Babylonians are the only rival in the space race but they have not discovered Superconductor yet.

I was done by then. I am following your and haleewud's posts, at least enough to get the general idea. It seems that you are both playing for landing, and both went north eventually, though I haven't quite connected the two plans.

As 1850 was ending, I could see the end in sight. I still needed 11 SS, 11 SC and 9 SM, but I had 21 cities and 4 SS, 5 SC and 6 SM were already under construction. I was at war with the Greeks, although it had been a very uneventful war. My power was Supreme, but my reputation was Dishonorable.

1851AD SS#29 and SM#4 are built, FT9 is discovered, Kiev Oil to Munich for 1856g, Babylonians demand Superconductor and I give it to them.

As I save for the end of 1855AD, everything is set up for my spaceship to be completed.

1856AD Babs build SS#3, Babs sneak attack, the Americans come to my aid, Babs attack Detroit and Dnepropretosvsk with planes and ships, but cannot kill all of the defenders. The Americans get SF from the Babylonians.
SS#36, #37, #38 and #39, SC #14, #15 and #16, SM 8, #9, #10, #11 and #12 are built. Spaceship is completed.
I bribe Mycenae (at 57,51) from the Greeks for 838g, I get 152g + Fundamentalism, 4 Greek partisans are formed. The Greeks demand Nuclear Fission, I refuse, but they still sign cease-fire and peace.
Spaceship is LAUNCHED.

In the 11 years between my Launch and the Landing, I fought a war with the Babylonians. I captured 14 of their 18 cities. I also fought the Mongols and Egyptians, both of whom sneak attacked me in 1865. I captured 1 Mongol city and 9 Egyptian cities prior to landing.

I launched a full space ship in 1816. Warfare is ongoing with Greeks; their homeland was invaded after the launch. Germans are wiped out. Babylonians have started fighting with me. Their advanced tech allows them to be rather deadly. Good thing they are spending the bulk of their production on their space ship. Americans are still maintaining peace. Each turn is taking over an hour in real time. It will be a while before I get done as I am heading out of town.

Also, why do the turns take an hour even after the launch ? I assume your capitol is safe, far to the south. So, this is about defending colonies ... or last-minute growth for score ... or it's just about fun ?

My plan was to buy some choice cities of my former allies, gain access to North shore of the huge continent, and engage in warfare with aggressive Mongols and Greeks while launching a space ship. Things however did not turn out that way. Babylonians and Egyptians became too demanding and eventually I had to say no to their demands at the cost of the alliance. Later on warfare broke out with Egyptians and I had to wipe them out. Next Germans got nasty and I had to wipe them out too. (Originally I planned to just ignore them and their homeland.)

I could have kept the peace by limiting my settlement to the southern part of the huge continent, which had plenty of room for growth, and concentrate more on the space race. I would have probably been done by now had I done that.

You got it. I have a large empire which is still growing in the North. I have been at war with 2 and sometimes 3 rivals. And finally this thing is too much damn fun!

I think the last turn I played is 1820. Greeks will be gone in 1-2 more turns. Americans have still kept the peace. Mongols are down to 1 pet city. Babylonians have lost a few cities to bribery but are still pretty strong. I lose a few units to them every turn.
