The download page? Starting .zip file? I'm not sure exactly what those are, but I had already replaced my pediaicons.txt file with the one that came with GOTM28. Is that the file you're talking about or did you create a new one?
Yes, that's the file Ainwood ws referring to, but I don't think it relates to your problem, as it dealt with leaderhead file references. Your problem seems to indicate that your pediaicons.txt file doesn't include an entry for WON_SPLASH_78. I just checked my copy of the file and it's there. This same issue came up in a recent SG rerun of gotm24, played in v1.29, when a Port of Entry was completed. Please can you open your pediaicons.txt in a text editor and see if you can find this text. If it's missing then I suspect you have not replaced an old version of the file. Perhaps you have put the new file in the wrong place?
I made the mistake of putting the new pediaicons.txt file in the wrong subdirectory. I have since fixed it, but not before I stupidly submitted the game from the turn before the crash. I have since submitted the correct, final savegame and score. Ainwood, please check your PMs for details.
Now I don't know what I did. The pediaicons that is in civ/text doesn't have the entry, but the one that is in the zip file that came with GOTM28 does. So where did I get this other pediaicons file??? Hmm. Well, thanks for the help!
Jaafit: It's funny you say that, because I could swear I put the pediaicons.txt in the right place before I started this game -- but when it came time to finish the game, the pediaicons.txt in /gotm25/ didn't match the one that came bundled with GOTM 28. <shrug>
I fixed it just by manually recopying pediaicons.txt from the GOTM 28 bundle into the appropriate folder in GOTM25.
One more minor question: my GOTM win hasn't made it into my Hall of Fame -- at least not the HOF I see at the Conquests main menu. Is there a separate PTW HOF somewhere?

GOTMs count as modified games and so the results aren't recorded by the game software. You can add them manually if you want, and there's a post around here somewhere that explains how to do it. The missing search facility makes it a needle/haystack job, though
I just won my GOTM28 by Domination victory and seconds later I was delivered a game crash message referencing the GOTM25 pediaicons.txt file in that it couldn't read it.
Two questions: What the heck should I do to fix this, and I didn't save for around 2 turns, so will this affect my GOTM entry when I restart and replay those turns? I don't want to miss a GOTM due to this technicality, but I also know there are rules about cheating. There is no way I'm replaying this game all over again, since I chose the domination path and had a hell of a time doing it.
I don't want to miss out on this months entry.
Thanks,
Chris
I'm not sure of the fix, but there should be an auto-save available to reload from (unless you've got that turned off )
Just reload from the auto-save and play until the last unit is about to attack and save again. That save should be OK for a submission.
Someone (probably Ainwood or AlanH) will be along shortly to ask a couple of questions (version PTW, Vanilla - revision 1.27, 1.21 - what the error message was, etc)
PS: Since I haven't seen your handle before, welcome to the GOTM

Hi Chris
I assume you are playing PTW? Reason is v.1.29 doesn't know which game you are playing, so wouldn't have mentioned gotm25.
On that basis, my question is: Did you transfer the pediaicons.txt file that was supplied with your start file into the Text folder in the gotm25 scenario folder? If not you need to do so, as this is exactly the problem it was designed to fix. This was specified in the Readme that came with the start file download. You do read Readme's don't you?

Did you switch off Autosave? If not then you should have the autosave from the last turn before you won. Reload that after you've fixed the above and replay the last turn as close as you can to the way you played it before. No one gets banned for reloading after a crash, unless it's happening all the time during the game.
PS. You couldn't replay the game because you know too much now - that's a real cheat.
Thanks for the help guys. I'm sure the autosave was on, and I don't recall installing a new file, so whoops on my part.
Thanks for the welcome too.
I've been playing GOTM since number 17, but have mainly just been a lurker. Plus I've never milked a game enough to get a respectable score.
Note that we use a different scoring system to the built-in one, which largely removes the need for milking. Very few people now bother to milk for a high-score, and the awards are based on fastest win of each type, and the highest 'jason' score of each type, rather than the highest score overall.
