GOTM 28 First Spoiler

I'll open the final spoiler in a day or two. In the interim, you can discuss your starting exploits strategies!

Reading Requirements
  1. Reached at least 0 AD.

Posting Restrictions
  1. Please do not post any details of anything happening post-500 AD.
  2. Please do not post any details of anything happening outside your starting continent.

jesusin, challenger. Goal: Fastest Cultural victory.

Starting:
Warrior NW. Settled on the plain hill. Fishing and Worker. When Fishing was researched, I thought and I realised that by turn 37, both WB-Worker-WB and WB-WB-Wor would at least by 4 turns behind Worker-Mine GrassHill-WB-WB in everything. So that's what I did.

Next I chose BW instead of my usual tendency to go for Pottery. With so many good tiles and so low a happiness cap, I wouldn't be working cottages anytime soon. I am glad I did. 'Inefficient' pre-Maths chopping is indeed powerful.

I was so glad with my strategy that I made many small mistakes: forgetting they are fast workers, forgetting only 1pop is needed to whip a lh, waited for the perfect time to revolt to slavery when we are Spiritual...

Cities:
2360BC with 2gold, stone, sheep. 2nd cottage city.
1480BC: fish, copper. Auxiliary.
925BC: on PH, fish, deer. The poorest GPFarm I've ever run.
75BC: lake, 2deer
50BC: fish, overlapping the 2nd city.

Decision1
By 1500BC I knew we were alone and we only had one single happy resource. No good. Immortal difficulty too. Having lost the early religions, there was a good chance I would never get any religion at all. Not that I would have ot any if I had tried, being the Challenger save... Anyway, it was clear that the 2 happy from Pyramids->Representation were the only hope. Changed gears, rushed Masonry, started on Pyramids even without Stone connected and chopped it all around capital for a 775BC Pyramids. Ufff.

Luck:
Some good luck: The Oracle builder chose something different and I was able to found Confu.

And some bad luck: With 50% chances I could have got a GE instead fo a GS, that could have immediately rushed the Parthenon. That would have been so sweet...
I used the GS on Philo for a second religion.

Decision2
Time to make a decision. Play the shy game and stay in my little rock, trying to get a cultural win with 6 miserable cities? Or be brave and beeline Astronomy for a nice round of tech brokering that would sky rocket me to a wonderful position to develop my culture?
Only second spoiler will tell.

Where am I?
At 75bpt instead of 175bpt, and without CS yet, I am very worried about getting first to Liberalism. Having avoided Alphabet, I am in no position to build the NE. I am hammer-poor too. This doesn't look good.

I dropped any cultural plans after seeing the lay of our land. Decided to see how close I could get to a military victory. Managed to build the Oracle (for CoL) and the Hanging Gardens.

This was an evil, evil map. I wonder what's happened to Ainwood :mischief: I loved it though.

  • No good long-term city spots other than the capital.
  • No contact with other AIs until optics - by which time on immortal level they're virtually guaranteed to have a massive tech lead over you.
  • Lack of happiness resources

But the best bit of it was the islands in the starting screenshot - which made me think we were on an islands map with the setting to create lots of small islands - which I'd expected to mean at least some other AIs can be contacted with workboats. I planned for that, and gradually realized as my 3rd workboat explored the island that that just wasn't going to happen...

I started out by building a worker while researching fishing then swapped to two workboats (for the clams). My map at 175AD (coz I forgot to take a 500AD one) looked like this:

I later regretted both my 2nd and 3rd city placements:
  • Bombay was placed on the assumption I could do conquest with galleys and so didn't need a good long-term city. Just wanted to work the two golds quickly. Had I realized this was going to be a long-term game I'd have put it on the coast.
  • Madras was placed when I could see the copper and horses but not the iron. At that point I judged that my only opponents on the main continent would be barbs and chariots were my best defence against them.
  • Of course, *then* I realised the nature of the map - in the light of which I should go for the colossus, so had to found Bangalore as an overlapping city to get the copper.

Other than that I didn't bother founding much anything till much later because of spiralling maintenance costs on immortal and no other good city spots.

Key points.
  • I managed to chop the great lighthouse (not very useful at that point, but what else is there to build? And in the race to get optics asap every little helps...)
  • But then I failed to get the colossus. I don't understand why. I was a couple of turns away, realized I could poprush it, so I poprushed it. That should guarantee you get it shouldn't it, coz the player goes first? Yet the next turn *after poprushing it* I get the message saying, you can no longer build the colossus. Your hammers have been converted into (thankfully, lots and lots) of gold. Uh???????????????

After that I had a rethink, and decided, instead of beelining for optics, to beeline for monarchy, and just use lots of units to get my cities large.

As of 500AD I'm 3 turns from monarchy, I have machinary plus forges, but my civ doesn't look much different from the 175AD screenshot (one more city SW of the fish to the NE of the island). I have no contact with any other civs. Hopefully once I have monarchy, things will move forward, but I'm pretty sure I'm in trouble - I've gotta be way behind the other civs in techs, and my prospects of winning this game are not looking good.

@DS: Are you completely sure some AI didn't finish the Colossus the turn you poprushed it? The computer will allow you to build a wonder for one more turn after an AI completes it.
The sequence could have been: The Colossus has been completed in a foreign land! -> You poprush it that turn -> next turn You Can No Longer Build The Colossus (because it was already built)

If that's not the case, if you actually rushed a 'live' wonder and got beat to it anyway, well that's a new one...

This was an evil, evil map. I wonder what's happened to Ainwood :mischief: I loved it though.

I forgot to say that I am enjoying this map immensely. :goodjob:

It is a new situation (we had been left alone before, like GOTM1 once you killed the Greeks, but we always had good lands to work on), so new ideas are needed. Refreshing.

A little crabs and a little lake in the NE tip would have made my live so much easier, though...

Contender

At 500 AD total pop 18 in 5 cities.
In capital have library, lighthouse, forge, Oracle, Colossus, Nat Epic.
In city2 have library, Parthenon and forge.
In city3 have library, granary and GL.
Capital will have to double as GP farm.

Keep bumping happy cap and no religions so have to use the whip, which is something I should do more often in my games in general, given how effective it is.

Working on cultural win so will have to depend on good old open borders to bring me some religion once somebody finds me.

Still only warriors for defense though and have a barb axman threatening. It's always interesting when playing cultural to see how weak an army you can get away with.

Finally a spoiler thread :)

Contender save.. Goal: Stay alive to see an AI win with a spaceship.. (Never played immortal difficulty before)

Total crap island. If it wasn't tundra it was desert.. I don't really see how I'm supposed to have a chance versus the AI here..

I researched fishing -> bronze working -> meditation. I actually got to found the religion anyways. I then beelined to writing for library and then metal casting to build the Colussus. Then I went for monarchy to get hereditary rule, so I wasn't limited by happiness. Then I beelined for optics to meet the AIs so I could start trading.

I thought the islands that was visible would be bigger. Thought it might be the same island too.. So I put 2nd city on same spot as DynamicSpirit, to get gold, stone and food. I ended up founding a lot of crap cities as there was nowhere else to grow. Two north in the tundra, one west and one east, both on the coast. One in each of the 3 islands, spaced apart as far as I could get. Finally one all the southwest to take advantage of the sea resource there.

I'm unsure where I was at 500 AD, my game is done and submitted. I'll stop here to be sure not to reveal anything.

I really made some stupid mistakes, I built the pyramids, but I forgot to change my civics!
My cities stayed really small because of the unhappiness (no religion), and my cities were poorly defended.
Well, this wasn't one of my best games :)

Much more difficult map than is typical for GOTM, particularly at a high level. Enjoying the challenge and (as mentioned above) the need to try new tactics, but it's going to be a long game.

I missed the Pyramids by one turn around 825BC. Without the added science from specialists, that significantly delayed Astronomy beyond 500AD. Be very interested to know when other players researched it, but wouldn't that have to wait for the second spoiler?

At 500 AD I am 5 turns away from Optics.

I built Stonehenge, Oracle, and the Colossus.

I used the Oracle to sling to Metal Casting.

I founded Buddhism and have that in every city.

I have 6 cities, with about 21 pop. I've been using the whip heavily. Most of my cities are founded on the coast for the commerce bonus. I absolutely loved the two tiny islands SE of our main continent.

I'm really hoping for some barb continents when I get optics...give me some room to expand.

My goals are to tech to liberalism, which I think I can get, tech broker my way to improving my economy, and hopefully score a diplomatic win when I meet my neighbors. I know that I'm behind in tech...

DynamicSpirit, I played Bombay 1 West for the coastal commerce bonus. I settled Bangalore on the Copper to get the bonus for the Colossus immediatel, and I settled Madras on the horses, and I settled on the iron on the farther island.

This my first time playing vanilla in over a year and the rust showed.
I placed my capital 2 North to make room for another city to the south, which was a mistake as the fish i was leaving room for was needed for one of the island cities. I was so focuesed on REX and strapped by the happiness cap, that I could not completely fog bust, and had some Barb annoyence. I had yto build pyramids just for the happy bonus from representation, also builot the great library. At 500 AD I had settled most of my own island, the resource islands to the south and am praying to get to astornomy before the others to settle some barb lands, as that i feel will be the only hope I have.

I agree that this map was both evil and fun. In an offline game, I probably would have abandoned pretty early; I'll have to rethink that attitude.

I founded on the PH and built a worker while I researched BW, following Cactus Pete's suggestion from the pre-game thread. I didn't have a specific VC in mind, but I knew it probably wouldn't be culture, so I didn't worry about religions. I founded Bombay in 2640 one east of where Dynamic Spirit founded. This meant missing out on the sheep, but I just couldn't landlock it. I didn't think I would be able to grow big for a long time due to happiness, and figured that three farmed FPs would provide enough food.

I founded my third city on the copper, and the fourth up north to get the sheep/deer. Those were the only four cities I had for a long time. I build the Great Library in 800 BC. I teched Monarchy in 675 BC to switch to HR and built a ton of warriors to fogbust and improve happiness.

In 500 AD I'm still at four cities and have just finished MC, on my way toward Optics/Astro.

I got off to a great start, getting Buddhism, and a fast 2nd city, and a bunch of fogbusting Warriors. 2nd city in stone-FP area, and wanted the GLH-Colossus combo, and Mids for happiness (ambitious, I know).

However, I had horrible luck with barbs popping on the few "shadowed" tiles, and then horrible rolls lost my 2nd city to them when it was 3 turns from completing the Oracle. I tried to take it back, but I was a goner, pulling my other fogbusters back to 2nd city just opened the door for more barb spawning. Excessive whipping in my cap combined with 3 living barbs and only a single warrior left in my cap, I retired. BTS Barbs are so very very different from Vanilla, I think I just "assumed" they would found a city to the north and I would have peace until they popped out some Axes.

Oh well, Immortal is a rough grind anyway, and I just dont enjoy it nearly as much as the lower levels. I guess I am just a Monarch level players at heart, heh.

Contender. Conquest, if feasible, or any VC.

I thought this map was pretty workable. I thought in advance that pyramids/SE would be the way to go. Takes advantage of small coastal cities and gets you your GSes for Astro. So I was hoping for stone and I wasn't planning to chop too much of the forest, so I researched Fishing and built a wb.

I missed on the PYramids for no good reason, but there were two bad reasons. First, I'm so used to playing epic that I was in too slow of a rhythm. They were completed and it was already going on 500bc before I noticed. Second, my fogbusting was a little bit lazy and I suddenly got a bunch of tiles pillaged around 1000bc. So I had to come ujp with a new plan, but this was bad because my REX was focused on specialists, not cottages. Most of the middle game involved me flipping from one VC to another, trying to figure out what might win (at all). I still thought COnquest might be the easiest, so I focused on that. I decided that I was going to need hereditary rule to make any progress so I beelined Monarchy, and settled in for the long haul...

I was thinking maybe if I can get to Liberalism first, I'll have a chance...

My earliest save is 250ad (I was just playing...)

Contender, unclear goal at the start.

Settled in place, worker first+BW. Strategy was to chop the Oracle for CoL and run a bunch of scientists to lightbulb my way to Astronomy (gambling on no galley routes on this map). When my warrior spotted the first gold, the second gold, and then the stone, I realized that I would have to eat my words from the pre-game discussion about not building the Pyramids. :)

My Oracle in Delhi comes a bit late since I want to save some forests for the pyramids. There are also some tense moments in the early game as the barbarians give me a headache, but I place a warrior on the forested plains hill between Delhi and Bombay and watch a bunch of barbs suicide against it. The Pyramids do get built by me and I can switch to REX and grab the few workable city sites on this island. Really cool map, especially the awkward little resource islands just off the coast. By 1 AD I still haven't settled these. There is a difficult choice to be made here, especially since a resource won't be connected unless there is a city on the same island (a lesson I have learnt the hard way).

Hmm, very different game. At 825BC I had had 4 cities for a long time. Once you have explored the whole map there are not more than 2 good city spots, so it is ok. But, weren't you worried in the early game about having only 2 cities for so long?

Early builds in Delhi:
Cities:
Delhi 400 BC in place
Bombay 1960 BC - 2xgold, stone, sheep, in same spot as jesusin. Really annoying that this city wasn't coastal...
Madras 525 BC between Delhi and Bombay, cottage city that can double as coastal production city
Bangalore 75 BC - NE corner with fish, deer. GP farm to be switched to coastal production working plains hill mine + 2 tundra mines
Calcutta 50 AD - Lake, 2 deer, in same spot as jesusin. Pure GS city, no production at all

Capital and GPFarm were on PH in my game, just besides in yours. What's better?
PH in capital gives quicker start. But being isolated, we have a long time to play with opur island and my capital was hammer-poor longterm. Undecided.
PH in GPFarm allows to hire specialist immediately. Non-urgent buildings are slowly built. Granary and lh are whipped. I only used the tundra mines while building the NE. Your buildings must have been built faster, but at the cost of 1 citizen working the PH mine. Undecided.

I love your Madras. I never thought of it, not having any resource. It would have been very good in my game, it would have worked the capital cottages while the capital was busy with the clams, the lake and the mines.
