GOTM 38 Pre-Game discussion

DavidCrazy: The main reason people setup settler factories is to get as many cities as possible during the land grab phase of the game. If you are able to set up a 4-turn settler factory and start producing a settler every 4 turns starting in turn 20 (3000 BC), by turn 80 (1000 BC) you would be have 16 total cities (assuming none of those new cities built settlers). If on the other hand you didn't setup this factory and just produced a settler every 8 turns and built a couple of units and a temple, you'd probably only have about 8 or 9 cities at 1000 BC. Less cities means less people which means less production, less research, less resources/luxuries, less military, which makes you look weak to the AI's and soon their swords & horses come to take your lands and all you've got are archers/spears. Eventually you're trying to hang on with pikes & MDI against cavalry and riflemen, which usually leads to a loss. If on the other hand you had those 16 cities, you might end up with a couple iron/horses that the AI would have got and you are now the one attacking with swords/horses against their archers & spearmen.

Vegasgustan: Welcome to GOTM, you've got plenty of time to play the GOTM (COTM won't work on the Mac, you've got to have Conquests). The game started last night and isn't due for about a month. I suggest you check out the Mac players link on the download page. You'll need to download and install a mod-pack, but the task is pretty simple. AlanH is our resident guru for Mac players, so if you have any questions/problems, he's the one to send a PM to.

Once again, AlanH beats me to the punch :D [cross-posting]

thank you for the replies about the settler facoty. but that only answered part of my question... :) let me phrase my question this way:
i know it's important to pump out settlers early in the game to grab as much land as possible and so i'll build a granary pretty early(maybe with chopping) and irrigate cow and wheat and mine other lands. then i'll start to pump out settlers and sometimes i may change to other things if the city's population drops too low. but that's almost all that i do. i know there're a lot of other steps i need to do to get a good factory but i just didn't want to learn all the math to get an exact factory.
for this starting position i guess i'll get a 4 turn factory as long as i build granary and irrigate... how much a difference will it make between doing this and maintaining a real good factory? thanks again!

Yep, those settler factories bring out the fanatics in civfanatics.

Micomanaging citizens is the sort of green-eyeshade details that I hate, but it's part of the game. It's kinda like having to move the sci slider to save gold.

I don't think there's a simple answer to your question. Some players can produce incredible QSC stats at 1000 BC, and come in at the middle of the pack in the final results. Others are middle-of-the-road in the QSC and pull amazing dates and/or scores out of the hat at the end.

- Download and install the All-in-One GOTM Installer for Mac OS X linked in my sig. (24 MBytes)

First, thank you. I went ahead and read everything and figured it all out. I got post happy first. Second, the All-in-One GOTM Installer already contains the 1.29B download too right? Will that effect anything?

No. The All-in-one GOTM istaller only contains GOTM add-on files and bluebox's scenario files. You have to apply it to an existing 1.29b2 installation, and it will fail if yuo try to run it on an earlier version.

The 1.29b2 patch is a separate installer linked in my sig, and is nothing to do with me except the site that used to host it stopped, so I now host it with MacSoft's blessing, though they don't really admit it exists and refuse to support it. You have to run that on any CD copy you might install before you can run my GOTM installer.

Got it! Okay, so I down the GOTM installer and then put "it" in my folder for Civ3, right?

Hopefully, this will be the last question. :D

No. You download it and run it like any installer. It asks you where your Civ3 folder is and installs into that.

Oh, I see. I am at work right now on a PC, so I will have to try that in about 4 hours or so. Thanks again. You are the man! :goodjob:

As this is my first time playing a GOTM I was wondering should I play as Open or Conquest? Are there significant advantages to either? I read up on them and I really can't decide. I mostly play on Regent or the one above. Oh, I am a Mac guy too. Help a brother out... :help:

Hi this is my first tryon GOTM playing vanilla Civ 3
only 6 campaigns old (2won 3lost 1 in progress) would appreciate any pointers. cheers

Q: will installing the GOTM mod stop me from playing my existing games?

Welcome to GOTM, Vegasgustan and crpcarrot. :)

The Open class is neutral, no extra benefits, BUT you will be eligable for any of the awards and medals.

Conquest gives you some support, some extra units and/or gold, depending on the map. The game should play like it's one or tow levels easier.

Predator does the opposite, it make the game play like it is a level or two higher. No extra points are handed but it does give you bragging rights... ;)

Thanks "a space oddity" for the welcome. I am just torn. I have only played "emperor" level once and I won...barely. I just did manage a space race victory. I almost got destroyed twice, once back in the medeval times and then once in late industrial. I guess I should just decide if I want to challenge myself and perhaps lose or not challenge myself (as much) and posssibly feel unfullifilled. The torment in my brain is driving me sane...yes, I meant sane.

Thanks Mistfit! I will play Open, I may lose, but I will go down fighting and smiling....

The other issue about conquest class (besides being ineligable for fastest-finish awards and medals) is that your score is penalised by 15%.

Generally, if you have managed to play emperor before (or even won comfortably at Monarch), I'd be inclined to play open.

Welcome to the GOTM (ditto to Vegasgustan).

No - it won't affect other games - you will still be able to play them.

That's the spirit! I look forward to reading your write up in the 1st spoiler to see how things are going.
I thought the spoiler page was for the people playing the quick version of the GOTM? It is for the regular stuff too, interesting. Well, I will try and write one up. I have never done that before and I don't know how to post those neat screen shots or anything. How often should I put an update? Oh, and thanks to all who has welcomed me!

Wait until you see a thread called GOTM38 - Ancient Age Spoiler (or somthing close to that)

You will have had to reach the end of the ancient Age and have contacts with everyone on your starting continent.

Go read a spoiler from an earlier game and you will see what format people typically use.

Hi,
I want to play my first GOTM, so I have downloaded the save, but have problems to load it to civ3. I have the latest version 1.29f, but if I want to load the game, a message appears: Error reading file ".Art/Units/eqWorker/eqWorker.INI". What is wrong there? There is no file like this in my civ3 folder  .

However I was able to load the save to civ3conquest! and Worker is called eqWorker. Should I play the game in C3C?

Thanks for any help.
