GOTM 38 Pre-Game discussion

Welcome to GOTM, PoorAxl. :)

In the classic games you need the GOTM modpack to play the game in civ1.29f. This will make the gameplay comparable to PTW.

You have two options:

1. When you hace C3C PTW is shipped as a bonus. You dont need to install the modpack and can play the game using the exe file that is in the PTW directory of your Civ installation.

2. Get Alan's excellent installer and install the modpack in you Civ1.29f environment.

Thanks, space oddity,
I have never played PTW, cause I always thought it is just something in between Civ3 and C3C. Maybe I will try this now (too tough for me to download 23MB)

thanks for welcome oddity and ainwood

well its my first game on emperor level so i'm quite sure i'll get wiped out. citizens are pretty unhappy bunch but got that under control so we'll see.

bugger just realised i've downloaded the conquest game when i wanted to play open. i'm ususally not very good at conquest ususally try for cultural or diplomatic victories. will using this savegame really affect the way i play?

The conquest save doesn't force you to go for a Conquest victory. It's just the name for the player class of those who still need to 'conquest' the higher levels. The player of that save gets some bonuses to make the start of the game that bit more easy. A leg up, so to speak.

Another GOTM-Newbie here. This start looked like fun, so i couldn't resist. I downloaded the Open-Class-Save and just started playing it with PTW. Now, did I do anything wrong? (I read the rules-pages and a few more). I didn't install additional ressources (because i couldn't find a definite statement that i needed it and it looked complicated at first glance) nor did i change the "No-Barb-Patrol"-flag ('cause i couldn't find that setting in my .ini, shall i just add it and shall i still do it now, that the game is well under way?). Anything else I might have overseen?

The game is fun so far, can't wait for the spoiler-thread.

@Axl: If the save should not run with PTW either (although it probably should) and you're running the german version, you might want to check out this thread.

Hi,
I want to play my first GOTM, so I have downloaded the save, but have problems to load it to civ3. I have the latest version 1.29f, but if I want to load the game, a message appears: Error reading file ".Art/Units/eqWorker/eqWorker.INI". What is wrong there? There is no file like this in my civ3 folder  .

However I was able to load the save to civ3conquest! and Worker is called eqWorker. Should I play the game in C3C?

Thanks for any help.
Which download did you use? Do NOT play it in Conquests. Since you have conquests, you could either play the PTW version (You do have it even if you don't know it) or the vanilla with the mod pack located here. Do the GOTM Full Installer. IIRC, basically it'll add all of the PTW new stuff to your vanilla version so that you can play the GOTM's.

Welcome to GOTM, even though I haven't been here too long myself.

No, the add-on files are only for Vanilla Civ 3 and the NoAIpatrol flag only applies to C3C and isn't mandatory anyway. To play the PTW version, you just download and go, as you did.

Good luck.

Lots of new people trying Gotm (at least my impression) :goodjob: . I'll need to quit my work :crazyeye: to find the time to finish this one (and probably still score lowest or something) but if that's what it takes... at least I'll have some newbie (to Gotm, not Civ) competition... this should be winnable, I've managed a space race victory in deity before :smug: (had to brag about that to the newbies :p )

Great to see lots of new players. So Ainwood, a nice start position attracts new players, even though it is emperor.

@ High King J.J., no need to quit work. It is sleep that needs to go.

No, it is the lure of the Chinese. For a newbie they are the one of the best Civs. Well, for me they were and they make for excellent warmongers under Monarchy and at a difficulty level of Monarch or below. Oh, the nice start did not hurt. However, who knows what the lies beneath the blackness.... THE SHADOW KNOWS :ninja:

I don't think I'm gonna get that much competition... I'm going for a Space Race... Everyone is going for Conquest/Domination... :hmm:

I am in doubt. I have done to many standard conquest/domination games now.

I would like to play OCC sometime, but then any other victory than conquest is lame easy and straitforeward. So that would still make it the same warring game. Also do i need a luxury start instead of a food start to do that. (Ainwood, are we gonna have a start with 2 luxes at emperor anytime soon? :D)

So i think going for the spacerace the for a first time in my civ career and see if i can provide Tomoyo some competition might be a good idea. Unfortunate however is that the score system forces me to still play a domination game anyway, making it still the same game again.
I might just disregard score, play it peacefully and only go for the launch date. (but what else to build all that time while teching)

Difficult choises, i have always loved war, but now that i want to try a different approach it seems to me that this game actually doesn't provide as much flexibilty as it is made out to do. :(

I don't think only for newbies. I think they are truly great for any warmongerer. The perfect warmongerer traits and one of the best UU's in the game. In the original civ, industrious was the single best trait and the only choise was what to go with it. 3 movement knights is just awesome.

I am not sure anymore, but china or Japan (i first played only Japan when i didn't yet know i only needed to change gov's once) is the civ that made me beat deity. Of course i was indeed a newbie then, but i still think china is pretty awesome.

Question:

of course reloading etc is forbidden, but would the following be legal? :

-Play your game to domination limit.
-Save the game
-Disband a city to get below domination limit.
-Continue playing for another victory condition (space / conquest / UN / 2050)
-If new victory condition fails or takes to long and makes me get bored or for any reason other reason does not make it to submission, reload the game before domination, press enter, then submit.

This way i could go for space race and have a domination game if the i fail to complete it to space race. (it is hard already for me to finish a short domination game due to time or boredome) I think the score system calls for a domination style start anyway.

Wacken, obviously I'm not on the staff so my views are my own but I think the answer should be no. You could, if bored, win at any time after hitting the domination limit with little effect on your Jason score, although a much bigger deleterious effect on your chances of a fast finish award.

Of course if you are agonizing again about scoring 12500 or 12600 jason points, then it is time for you to automate your workers :p .

@WackenOpenAir: That comes under the heading of reloading to change an outcome, and is not allowed. You do not reload to change your playing decisions. I had a similar situation in GOTM37, and chose to play on to Conquest. I could have triggered Domination at any later point if the game turned nasty, but I would never consider going back to an earlier save to do so.

So just because I posted that I'm getting some competition, eh? :p

When I play GOTM, I always try for one of the non-score awards, so I concentrated on teching this game (finished, with mediocre date) with no regard for extensive aggression.

Trust me, you'll have plenty to build while teching.

You can get high score with a space win, here are 4.
Ronald got 11th place in GOTM 32 with a score of 9681 in 1555AD.
Kemal got 14th place in COTM 02 with a score of 9402 in 1255AD.
SirPleb got 13th place in GOTM 33 with a score of 8935 in 1315AD.
SirPleb got 8th place in COTM 06 with a score of 10844 in 1345AD.

Now I can't do this, but you can try.
