GOTM 40 Pre-Game Discussion

I think my first move will be the Worker to the north. It is best to have the capital on a river and if the Worker reveals any decent land to the north I will move the Settler there to build somewhere along the river. I can always come back and build my second city immediately to the SW of the start position and still get the wines and the fish in the future.

general question here: do any of the various add-on programs (eg civassist, crpsuite) work on macs? Any recommendations for a relative beginner? I mostly would like to speed up diplomacy- i sure hope they work on that for Civ IV!

Thanks again for all the helpful info!

The problem I have with settling 1N is that it would be an inland city with several coastal tile in it's radius. I think it would be better to settle NW or go further inland.
is being inland or having several coastal tile good or bad?

It's bad because you'll never get to build a harbor there so the coastal tiles will never produce more than one food.

@Markus5 (& Controlfreak) Maybe you will miss something. I bet your biggest jumping problem will be the risk that you accidentally jump palace to your 20K city (if you'll have one). Culture influences how a new palace location is determined, though to my knowledge no one has shown exactly how.

I believe that the calculation here (Markus also had this link in his post) has been thoroughly tested and that culture has no effect.

I think I'll join the ones who will take a walk along the river to the n. 2sw will make a good later city with the double fishies.

First GOTM ever. Don't know why i decided it, but i'm probably going to get utterly beaten. Only ever played one regent game in my life.

Who knows... it might be absolutely inspired....

Sorry, no,I have it on my development wish list, but there are only 30 hours in a day ;)

You could run the PC ones in Virtual PC. I run these utilities on a crumby old P100 that was rescued from a skip/dumpster, ethernet-connected to my Mac and monitoring the Mac's Saves folder.

Other than that, the only small way I know to speed up diplo checks is to always leave something on the table after you visit a civ - map, some gold, a city, whatever - and hit escape to get back to the F4 screen. Then next time you double click their image in F4 you get straight back to the table instead of having to click again to get there.

@AlanH: Sounds like using a Mac is a pain! :)

Arrrr, I dunno, my decision to go space in COTM9 has condemned me to micro-management hell. Take it from me, plenty of Ancient Deities are worse off than I Am, but I don't know if there is time or not for this one. On the one hand, my game is still full of holes, and a regent game can be a good review of basics. OTOH, it'd be a shame not to play out COTM9 properly. Dunno... I might experiment with this one. It is regent, so maybe build only 3 cities until MM, or prepare to disband 4 or whatever cities at some point, then have a ridiculously huge first core, like 5 and 10 or something, spanning across coast or not, and a leader-rushed FP far, far away... Probably stoopid, but it's a game, and I play games with it.

That is quite possible. I did not know that ainwood's Trade Assist doesn't take city garrisons into account. And since there was no other explanation as to why Trade Assist wouldn't tell me what I wanted to hear, I assumed culture was the culprit. I've never doubted that DaveMcW's article is the prime source for calculating palace jumps.

The garrison factor was discovered a bit later (by SirPleb), which, I assume, explains why it is not included in Trade Assist.

Only for Civ, and I've overcome that with my setup. And for everything else it's a joy compared to Windows!

well, The last regent game that I remember on gotm was also my 1st, gotm17 and I lost a space race. I think I will have to play this one. I have come a long way since then, maybe I will get time to do this, I sure would like to finish cotm9 1st though.

As far as where to settle, I would be inclined to go to the mouth of the river.

This time, I'll participate. Btw what is thi nice smiley :ack: besides the difficulty regent???
Looks somehow like :spear:

This is my second attempt of a GOTM, the first one was the game with England that i had to ... postpone. I ll finish that emperor game later.

Goals: I don't know yet. Getting Mapmaking asap if we are alone on the island. Opening moves? I ll think about this if I begin to play.

Edit: I reread the strategy guide about the greeks. Seems to be ok for builder. Usually I'm peaceful. Unless someone denies fair access to ressources or to land or to technology ...
I try a more dense city spacing this time and I ll do more micromanagement.

But why worrying too much on regent ... its like using tanks against spearmen

Have fun with the GOTM!

Climate: Normal, warm.

Taking into account that we are at North and there is a desert on that island, don't you think that it sounds too warm? Maybe even hot?

I am still playing COTM9 (did not qualify even for a second spoiler yet), I had a big RL interferance, but I hope now I will have time to finish it (not RL  ) and to play this one too.

I think I also will move N. It is better to have more cities in the circle, besides there are plenty of wood around that spot. Depending on what F10 says (maybe even independing of that) I will research pottery.
Worker - mines and then roads.
First build - warrior and then we will see.

@AlanH- thanks for the info- i was afraid of that (no assister programs for mac). I actually bought a PC recently, and if I ever find a cheap version of Civ3 Complete I may switch over. I still love my mac though! :)

@ everybody- just checking out the Conquest bonus for this GOTM (don't laugh- i know its Regent, but I would like to actually win this one!) Doesn't seem like that big of a bonus- worker will speed up improvements, obviously. I can only assume that the 50 gold would help buy a first teir tech from someone who doesn't like you/already has all of your techs. In other words, the gold bonus is a crutch for poor early trading? However, given that we might actually get to some barb encampments/goodie huts (unlike GOTM39)- seems less critical in this game. Am I missing something, or have I just talked myself into going for Open again?

Actually, after all of this lead-up, I just hope I have time this month to play!

Again, thanks in advance for the help, and good luck everyone!

You usually get a bit of gold in Conquest class to help with unit support. Your worker needs a salary.

This is going to be my first GOTM. It should be fun, a regent game should allow you to operate with complete impunity. I was thinking of playing greece in my next game anyway. I really need to know the lay of the land before I make any solid plans, but a republic slingshot seems like an easy layup here. Won't raging barbs slow down the ai? It should also make more barb galleys, no? I think I will stress hoplites and make war as soon as my rebuplic gets on its feet. Early barb hunting with hoplites should make for a few elites. No need to worry about an early GA, it should be quite easy to keep peace on regent until the proper moment.

 unfortunately this is not GOTM, that is, it is not based on conquest. so the philosophy doesn't give you a free tech. but i think this is better. :) hope this won't discourage you from playing the game.
