GOTM 51 - pregame discussion

The OCN for a small map on emperor with the commercial trait is 17 (22 with FP). This is quite similar to a standard map on emperor without the commercial trait (OCN = 16, 22 with FP). So I would say we don´t have to sweat the corruption effects.
I think that you're probably correct. I'm now at home and I've just checked the vanilla editor. 16 for standard and 14 for small is not much different. (What's the modifier for FP and commertial traits BTW?) I must have got confused with the differences that large/huge maps give to corruption calculations. Thanks for pointing that out, Twonky. :goodjob:

I'mm hearing many of you saying to settle on one of the gold hills. Wouldn't you lose the bonus commerce by doing that?

IIRC if you settle on a tile that has greater commerce than the standard amount for a town, then you get the larger amount for the town centre income. I'm not 100% confident that you gain the full amount (apart from Despotism penalty) but I think that you do. However I am sure that early commerce will be higher settling on the gold as opposed to settling somewhere else.

If anybody knows the amount of commerce in the town/city/metro centre for settling on a golden hill I would be interested as well.

food : shields : gold

Despotism

Center: Grassland 2 : 1 : 3
Other: Gold Hill 1 : 1 : 3

Center: Gold Hill 2 : 1 : 4
Other: Grassland 2 : 0 : 0

Difference: +1 : -1 : -2

Republic

Center: Grassland 2 : 1 : 5
Other: Gold Hill 1 : 1 : 5

Center: Gold Hill 2 : 1 : 6
Other: Grassland 2 : 0 : 0

Difference: +1 : -1 : -4

After mining the Gold Hill, one more shield is lost in the settle-on-gold hill scenario.

I dunno, in a culture game I think I'd want to rail those gold hills, build market, bank, Colossus in capitol, Lighthouse somewhere else. What wonders trigger our Golden Age?

Religious and Commercial are great for 100k. On a small map, population is even more important. People will become very angry with the draft, and you will be limited in the number of cities you can draft from. A gov't with a high unit support rate for a zillion workers can help. And, corruption is a problem with a big RCP size. The choices appear to me to be R=2 or 3.

Nice comparison. But how do you judge that 1 food difference? It can be more valuable than several shields and commerces regarding our lack of fresh water...

Plus it ignores the necessary effort to improve tiles which prefers grassland outside the town over hills.

But a close call anyway, depending on how you want to play it. Now that's what I like about such starts, different solutions work for different people... :goodjob:

However the E-SE-goldhill is definetely out for me as it's not on the coast. The hill 2SE seems to be on the coast (or even better: on fresh water!).

Twonky, as far as i know, what you say is valid only for conquest, not vanilla/ptw.
To be honest, I don´t know for sure. I used the OCN calculator from the utility forum for the numbers. While they might be inaccurate, I think the OCN for small COM roughly compares to standard not COM, give or take.

Piu Freddo: nice summary! Despite the overall loss of commerce you get from settling on the gold hill, I´m still tempted to do just that. After all, you gain one food (as you already pointed out). And you don´t have to work the gold hill to get early commerce, which I would not expect to happen anytime soon.
Settling on the gold hill worked well for most players in COTM 18.

You are all nuts!

Look at the map!

Do you want quick expansion in growth?
Do you want quick expansion in research?
Do you want quick exploration?

It's easy, when you decide.

You don't mean... play GOTM50 again?!

Rel = Pyramids, Oracle, Michaelangelo, Bach, (Internet)
Com = Colossus, Lighthouse, Smith, Magellan, UN, (Internet)

Either Lighthouse or Colossus would be a good wonder to pick up early, so for a standard medieval golden age, I would aim for Bach. Of course, the UU comes along at about the same time...

Colossus is actually Religious as well, so building that would trigger your GA right away...

With only two weeks to play (yeah I intend to use the full 6 weeks for GotM50), I will go for fast Conquest. Anyone care to take on my predator don't-play-conquest challenge? I won't :mischief:

The map seems well suited for a fast takeover game... but with the conquest award already won i'd rather go for domination... unless i finish game 50, take a look at the spoiler and see a fair chance to grab the globe... in this case a science effort may be fun to try... anyway we aren't likely to compete this time Nik ;)

BTW i'm still stuck in 190AD with game 50 - hope to resume it tonight and be able to finish it off in the weekend, then we'll see. I'm worried by PF's ancient age posting... judging from the situation he should be able to get the dom limit around 750-800 ad, and it won't be easy to beat such a date.

EDIT: Twonky: it seems to me that the calculator you mention is for conquest only.

Oh, that's annoying. I can't stand ancient golden ages, but I wanted to do Colossus - it's so cheap, and can be a good boost to research if it is in a big town.

I might take on your challenge. I'll probably play predator, and am thinking of going to space. Settling 1SE and catching all the scientific wonders would make for an awesome research city. If only it was on a river too...

Well, DaveMcW certainly had a nice 100k game in the recent England COTM, with an ancient GA. But, that was conquests...
Hmpf. I don't know if I really want to go 100k again, I already won that on a small map... either conquest or 20k. After GOTML, that is. Look out, Tricky!!

Hi this is going to be my first GOTM.

No idea what to do!

I guess load the game, play as best I can and submit my score when victorius/defeated?
