GOTM 8 *Spoiler* Talks

I eventually finished, sent a full ss to arrive in 2020, tried to expand population as much in the mean time. Nothing to impressive except the SSC which beats smash with 1328 beakers. Same location, marginally weaker trade routes 3 * 18, but i irrigated the silk to farmland, what i lost in trade arrows i gained in extra food, extra pop, so more scientists. I was going to post a pic but matrix says it needs to be on the web somewhere, as i don't have a homepage it's a no go. If anyone is interested then PM and i'll e-mail a copy.

I've been plodding along in my GOTM trying to populate the world but one thing bothers me.

This may be a dumb question but I can't build any research labs. Is it because of a wonder?

Well, at least I didn't get killed off by a Celtic chariot this month! :)

Hello donsig,

I can not produce research lab when You have the SETI program wonders which will gives you a research lab free in all yours cities. Plus, You will be able to see all the cities all the map and all the map also.

1328 beakers :) good job.Seems counter to the SSC to change a trade square but you made it work.Always a way to sqeak a little more...

The map is revealed with Apollo.

yes, the map is revel with Appolo program wonder.
Sorry, I made a mistake.

I 'm French and my english is poor. (I play with the french Civ II.)

What beakers means ?
And a lot of abreviation used in the forum:
SS Space Ship I guest
SSC ?
OCC ?
and a lot of another ones....

Please Help

Win the game by spaceship with 1 city.An SSC can do this.

Thinks for the precisions.

You can win the game with space launch with ONLY ONE CITY ?????
Is that you talking about ?

I finished the GOTM!! :D

Finally, because my last one was...GOTM V. Though I have played GOTM VII too, but I didn't have time to finish it. :(

Anyway, here is my kill-summary:
600 BC: Japanese
500 BC: English
420 BC: Sioux
360 BC: Babylonians (by Barbarians)
20 AD: Celts
380 AD: Russians
600 AD: Romans
700 AD: Celts

Stupid restarting Civs...[punch] Otherwise I would've ended at 20 AD!! That would've been a personal record!

Well even if this is probably my last GotM ever, and I'm therefore working harder on the game that I would normally do, and therefore should be doing rather good, I still think that this is so easy that I can't really believe that I'm doing that good!!!!

I'm currently in 600BC; I have 73 cities, a population on 50 mil+. I only lack stealth to have the techs and my gold is at 14000+. I might not have as many points, but that is just because I only have two cities of 12+ - but danm I have a lot of cities - 11 on the start island and lots on the others....

The Celts are my allies so they are the only Civ that still have more than two cities, well things are going very well, I only hope that I will have the time to finish the game....

:sniper:

I'm pratising a lot playing civ II right now.
I try to take care all of the advise in the "War Academy" and all the tips in the forum...

I play again the GOTM 8 just for see and :( , I'm in 1200 BC and I have discovery Invention (I discovered this in the game I submit around 1500 AD) ... So , thanks to all for the advises...

Shadowdale: 73 cities in 600 BC with +50 M People...
I'm very impressed
You are the :king:

See you

I found my first hut around 1900BC.

I'm just now pushing on the English and the Mongols, but can't believe how far people have gotten so quickly. I see that I still have a lot to learn about using caravans the right way.

I do so, but I am comming back into my old form. I didn't play it for an year. My major problem this game was that I wasn't attacking them all time. I won the game in 1898 :)

...decided to give it a try, see how bad I really was. Planning to race to Space Flight as soon as possible; I didn't think I could do it before 1000 AD and I think I'm going to be right. Anyways, here goes, a starlifter style timeline, but in the correct direction so when you read down, you see what happens LATER :)

4000 BC: wandered and explored.

I stopped there. Doesn't look like I'm going to get Space Flight before 1300 AD. Hmm *looks around, notices other people with it 80 years before I got Industrialization*. So what am I doing wrong? All the wondrous Civ doctors in this thread can surely diagnose the illness!

I'm done! :rocket:

First GOTM I finish on time, ;) Pretty good score too, maybe a top ten. And BTW I want to point out that all those airbases were built in strategical purpose,

Chofritz :love2: airbases

I'll go and submit right away!

It's time for some

Hey Chofritz - that is my kind of thinking; Shadowdale :love2: his  - I'm even working on getting a :grad: in  drinking!!!!!!!

And Sevorak - just because some of us got SS before you shouldn't discourage you from trying next months game - it a good way of improving your game.

The fact that I got just before you got Navigation only shows that I'm stupid enough to spend to much time perfecting my game - for no better reason than wanting to get a high score........

Hey Sevorak, nice timeline! Judging from you tech rate, it looks to me like your science is lagging a bit. Aim to get it up to one per day (with help from caravans), then to two per day by about Automobile (freight gets 99.9% of one, and democracy's science rate gets the 2nd). Use your trade advisor and tax slider to determine your actual cost of science, and keep it down thru trading, gifting, and seeding. If you've got lots of freight coming, this is not that critical, since you'll need more gold anyway to grow and expand fast, yet even 10,000 beakers from freight on one turn (and 10,000 gold) will get you only one advance, since the program will not allow an advance from trade on the same game turn.

I can't tell if you are city-short or not, which might be slowing your science rate too. I assume you have a good SSC in Democracy, but from slow science rates, maybe not. :)

1300 - Ast, (at this point I'm 1150 years behind starlifter, yay) S - Inv
If it is any consolation, Starlifter is about 600 years behind Shadowdale, but was less than 100 years behind Chofritz, and probably somewhere between that behind Smash ;). But hopefully, some people can use my timeline & details to have a "roadmap" to use in shooting for a better game, and putting new names into the top 10 and top 3!

EDIT: Added: I just noticed your Wonder selection. I used to always build Pyramids first, and never build Colossus at all. However, the power of science and gold now makes me go for Colossus right away. I would rather have Colossus in a good trade city, than Pyramids. In GOTM 8, I actaully lost the later race to Pyramids because of shield limitations, and have been behind in building wonders (except for SSC wonders) the whole game. But it has kept science high, and that in turn accelerates science even more. The price is expansion, which was rather slow compared to staying in Monarchy and going for Pyramids right away. It is rare to be able to expand madly and grow and produce simultaneoulsy, due to the nature of the simulation. But I've come around to the science/perfectionist point of view in the last 2 years, esp. for GOTM and OCC playing. OCC really taught me the value of growth and economy, and how much wars and military units drain growth, science, and gold. So I'd suggest delaying Pyramids until after Colossus, or at least do them simultaneously in another city. Don't tank your early game gold and science by delaying the Colossus and the SSC ;).

PS, The posting police have been deleting and editing my posts in another thread this week, and I'm not yet sure if that will be expanded to this GOTM thread... so it might be good to save this post before it is deleted or edited!

Yes, a late Colossus was one of the things I noticed myself as I finished it and looked at the date. "1260? Where HAS all the time gone?" The problem is that my SSC tends to be the city with the highest production, and I naturally assign all sorts of wonders to the city, not just science wonders. In the early stages, I find that no other city has the time to consider wonders, as they're constructing the WLTXD set of Temple, Marketplace, Aqueduct, while leaving a settler out and squeezing out the odd caravan every now and then to accelerate the SSC's build rate. This relates to caravans, too, but the problem is finding the city which has time to build them. Only after I have all the improvements do I start on caravans - and you'll note I recorded the date of my first Caravan - 1800 BC - on the timeline, just to see if I was early or late. That first caravan made a trade route with Paris, and then Marseilles started just supplementing wonder building until 300 BC or so.

Science - I have managed to gather from comments across the boards that somehow, trading or gifting tech lowers the cost of your science, but I have not been able to find any specifics. I traded when I could - contact with the Sioux and swapping 4 techs right off - but otherwise, I did not. Didn't even use my Marco Polo's.

I record every city founding date on my timeline. By 200 AD, I had a measly ten: Paris, Orléans, Tours, Lyon, Rheims, Marseilles, Chartres, Avignon, Besançon, and Rouen. Rouen, furthermore, was about size 2. The nature of the game made it impossible to explode my city growth in all directions as I tend to do in other games. All I could do was leap for Map Making and colonize the islands best I could.

As for the SSC: I did not get all the pieces together as of 200 AD (no Computers and no Research Lab/SETI). I only managed to get Colossus/Cope's/Newton's/Library/University by 640 BC or something like.

Freight...well, there's the problem, since I only grabbed Corporation at 80 BC and all the cities are currently constructing Factories and Colosseums and a stack of other improvements. It will be a while before I can make Freight, I think. Once I do...Should I start shipping it to the Japanese in full transportloads?
