Another fun conquest game. It took much longer than I thought it would... that was some nasty land (what there was of it) around where we started. I started out with Elephant's AD 1 challenge in mind, but ended up closer to the Norman Invasion (and in retrospect I feel pretty good about the date!)
I'm trying to play "pure" conquest this time (no concern for score or rep). I've gotten to 1500BC, I've got MarcoPolo, all maps, about to complete PolyTheism, a couple ships, a few more cities with settlers about to turn into Elephants. Still, looking at the distances involved, I'm doubting the AD1 myself now.

Well, you're off to a nice start...at least you've still got a shot, and you'll probably be able to finish sooner than me. I didn't even have Trade by 1500BC. By the time I had MPE and saw the maps, i really wasn't in a position to even make a run at AD1. Then I waited to get too good of a setup in place before starting conquest. I also took score into consideration along the way.

I decide for conquest a bit late, so it will be after 1000 AD - but I am sure I would not be able to finish the game before 500AD anyway. I am very curious about the date for green star.

I finally started, (after completing GOTM 38 -- sent away to DoM as GOTM 39
) and am already post 1 AD. Completed Col & MPE -- I felt that LH would have "cost" too much with opportunities foregone.
Am just now at the big trade round (just finished MPE) --toying with the thought to get KRC -- the production capabilities are very thin now as a monarchy -- look to shrink even farther as I'm considering a move to Republic soon.
Had a first for me. A barb trireme sailed up and smacked my trireme (tho the barb boat was wounded into the deep red zone). Had a view of a number of sea squares as the boat unloaded...one archer. I wonder if some wounded crew fell overboard with the sea battle?

Try building only on nonshielded grassland and convert some of the other nonshielded grassland to forest, worked pretty well for me. I am not doing HORRIBLY, but it sure isn't nearly as strong as any of the other gotms. I went lighthouse as first wonder, since there was pretty much no good accessible land or trading partners without it.

I thought about that, but it meant that the Colossus would go to another civ. I figure that I can get one ancient (200 shield) Wonder and Marco's as well -- more requires a break with terrain, huts, etc.
I'm gambling that after the great trading round, I should be able to be close to a position to use caravels; perhaps the maps (soon to be collected) will also mitigate the risk of trireme sailing...

I got lighthouse, colossus, hanging gardens, mikes all before 1ad. Improvements aren't really that great that early in the game, so there isn't much else to build but wonders(caravans) and settlers. I have 10 cities packed onto the start island I think hehe.

Ah, winter finally.
I should know better by now, but I don't seem to learn... One should never play the GOTM when tired and stressed. I started by looking around searching for a nice spot to settle my first city. Didn't find it so that was lots of turns wasted.

And I didn't get the lighthouse either (too much enter-clicking without using my brain me thinks) so my triremes were lost too. It's in the middle of the 15-hundreds and I have yet to make contact with everyone except for the vikings who were kind enough to come and pay my advanced tribe (actually I'm patethic and behind in everything) a visit.
I've been playing too much Civ 1. Yet I think the map has potential, so if I start an immense expansion I just might get an acceptable civ-score before the game ends. That is if the AI is as non expansive as I think. Otherwise they'll have a spaceship at AC, before I've made contact.
What bothers me is that not even the sytupid AI that built Marco's has contacted me which it should be able to, which goes to show the stupidity of the AI once again. Seems to me there is no logic in the way the AI builds womders. They simply build them so I wont get them
I have to give the game a go though. Otherwise I'll be traumatised by my incomptetence to plat seriously.

I didn't leave the isle until Navigation. So I'm a bit slow, but otherwise having fun. Still too few cities, although I'm about to "visit" -- haven't decided if I'll downshift to Fundy & go into trample mode, or stay the course in Democracy.
End-Of-Month Progress Report from Procrastinating Pachyderm:
RL and EL#8 got in the way of following through with #39. As feared, distance is the greatest impediment to rapid conquest. With apologies to La fayette, large-scale black-clicking was necessary to find a route southward. LightHouse had to be delayed due to unhappiness issues.
At 1500BC: 5 cities, Marco Polo access to all civs, all AI maps, all AI techs available (only took Map and Horse to switch to PT), researching PT, 2 boats exploring southward.
At 1000BC: 6 cities, 2 boats with 2 Elephants, Chariot & Horse heading southward. Archer and Dips prepared for second wave.
At 500BC: 12 cities, 3 boats, 5 Elephants, 1 Dip about to purchase last English city. Also have 4 Settlers working on home island.
The assault on the Strong Vikings began in 800BC with a boatload of Elephants. Kaupang, the "summer" capital, only had one Warrior defending it. Short work was made of it and Trondheim due to a handy connecting road. Uppsala was "run over" as the Ellies leapfrogged down the length of the narrow island. The fourth city, Hladir, was found and bribed in 650BC. A Granary and a Barracks helped improve the depleted treasury.
Assault forces were immediately reloaded for a visit to the English, who were now Mighty with 5 cities. A tech swap brought in valuable maps, after which London was removed from them in 600BC. York was razed, Nottingham captured, and Canterbury bribed, leaving Hastings to swap allegiances in 450BC. During that time several cities had their second citizen turn unhappy, so 4 caravans intended for LightHouse were diverted to building the Hanging Gardens in 525BC.
The current problem is that the assault boats are on the inside of the curve of the English island, and need to sail around to get to the Sioux. New assault boats are building on the east side, but will not be ready before those sailing around anyway. A couple more Dips are coming from Vikland as well, but it looks like a long sail to get to the Sioux capital. Back home, more caravans are nearing completion for LightHouse, after which a second assault force may sail direct from there toward the Chinese, hoping to meet up with the first force after it visits the Egyptians. AD1 does not look doable at this point, but the Norman Invasion should not be a problem. After all, the last English city to fall was Hastings!

Bummer. I got lucky on that one. One of the English cities (London?) was a canal.
At AD1: 23 cities, 8 boats, 10 Elephants, 5 Horse, 4 Archers, 1 Dip (just expended 2), 7 Settlers. Just bought the 2nd and 3rd (last) Roman cities, after wiping all but one Sioux city.
Wounded Knee gave me all their gold for a CeaseFire, which is just what I wanted to keep a "pet city" so my research rate doesnt go through the roof. I'm having a good run of Huts, too (I think the general statistics on Huts change when you are not playing with Raging Hordes). One boat with a Horse made it to China, popped one Hut for an Advanced Tribe and another for a Nomad (as it circled the island). The boat's original job was to blaze an island-hopping trail to China, but now I've got LightHouse so it doesn't matter anymore.
In addition to Marco Polo and Hanging Gardens, I've built LightHouse and taken Colossus from the Romans (had to knock Rome from size 7 down to size 1, though: they had 4 defenders in there!). I'm racing China to the Great Wall at the moment - I'd rather built it than have to batter it down, but that means SunTzu is put off another time. At this point, it doesn't really matter anymore: my "shock troops" are 4 Veteran Elephants and 1 Vet Chariot.
I shifted research down to 20% after getting PT; working on Chivalry after Feudalism but probably won't get it before the Elephants land in China anyway. Had to break a peace treaty with the Romans cause they wouldn't get ticked about repeated demands for tribute. Biggest problem right now is lack of attention to city growth. Only 1 city has a Temple, and I had to sell that temporarily to get enough gold to bribe Veii. I keep hiring Elvi rather than solving the problem, but the gold has been devoted to bribing and RushBuying.
All of this will be well documented in my turn-by-turn log. Hoping to wrap before the historic fall of Rome.

I've managed to play untill around 750 AD... With no end in sight, and the 'Due to' date nearly over, I really don't feel like rushing this game anymore...
It was quite a fun game, but I played it all wrong.. Conquest was definatly the best way to finish the game I think, but I kind of went for Space conquest myself.. And bad at that, since I didn't get any science wonders like Col, Cop etc.. Got Lighthouse, Hanging Gardens and Marco Polo instead.. Not bad, but not what I aimed for..
