I have to admit I didn't read this carefully enough. It took me a while to realize the army hadn't been formed yet, and I entirely overlooked the wish to mine the cow so I haven't done it.

I feel the game is in crisis manangement mode, when it really needs railroads and then a concerted attack on Byz heartlands.
sorry, offa, I should have been more clear. And I don't want to mine the cow, I want to forest it for 3f, 3s (unless we can get steam rather cheap, then mine and RR is fine).

Is this a measure of much we old gamers care about each other?

Then: It's pathetic!

Can't speak for the rest of the gang, but my head's been in a till for the last week. Finally coming back up for some air and little bit of Civ feasting.

Which starts tomorrow. So if WoA hasn't picked up by tomorrow you will be hearing from me!!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Sorry buds. I have to skip.

Sorry for not reading here for a while.

I am too busy and at the moment cotm19 and the sgotm are the only civ things i can find some time for.

Got it I have. Dispatches soon.

Move some workers around and some warriors to free up the useful garrisons. Turn the heat up on the scientists to see if I can't bring down the asking price for Steam.

The Byzantine invaders kill two muskets in the SW but lose a bow and a mace. They also put a push on Gagh in the NW and we lose a wounded knight but the warrior puts up a whee of a fight and defeats a rifle!!

710AD

Finish off a crippled rifle outside Kahnawake, then put the muskets, cannon and cavalry on the hill to the north of Edessa. Lob some stones and ironballs at the rifles in the NW at Gayagaahe, then turtle up to let the threat pass.

940.jpg

720AD
Picking off a crippled Byz longbow in the SW nets another general, Tecumseh.
Now we can really bring it home to Theo.

950.jpg

Deal with the cavalry threat in the center but leave a cav exposed.
And the cav dies.

In 730 I can make a deal for Peace and Steam with Sumer, but since the iron isn't connected yet and won't be for two turns leave it on the table. It will take all but 4gpt of our income but it should be tradeable to Carthage.

980.jpg

Iron hooks up in 740 so I go for the deal with Sumer.

990.jpg

And we seem to have no coal. Theo has two sources, one on a one tile island, the other in a former English town, now belonging to Theo:cry: , to the farther north (Reading).

Start moving forward to take Caesaraea.

992.jpg

The deal for Ivory with Hannibal will not help him as much as it does us.

991.jpg

Razing a few Byzantine towns will also help the economy as she has all the money in the world.

The Byz fleet keeps showing up off the north coast then sailing off to the NE.

Looks like our fearless leader is up.

Sorry for not being in touch lately, but finally my wife let me out of the cellar.

I got it, but need to read up what you mongers have been up to. :)

First thing I notice is the lack of coal, not many sources around at all and of course nothing close to us. It will be difficult to get our hands on that in the near future.

Byz is stronger than us, but we certainly put a dent in their lands so far. Let's see if we can continue.

I want a couple of settlers, decide to squeeze them out of Oxford and Dover.

760AD - Canterbury and St Regis build markets -> cavs.

Kill 2 rifles and a LB, lose a cav, but get 2 mor elites in return.

770AD - Lose a musket, kill a cav on defense.

Kawauka founded, move in an army there to deter a bunch of Byz troops.
Kill 3 cavs, 2 rifles and a LB without losses.

780AD - Byz begs for peace -> begone.

Brighton build market and Tonawanda bank -> cavs.

Assault on Ceasarea wasn't really an assault, only 2 rifles in there. Raze the city, gain 99g, 5 slaves and 3 cannons. Kill 6 enemies, losing a cav.

Our dyes to Carthage is up for renewal, throw in wines too for 32gpt.

790AD - Nothing.

800AD - Byz ally with Japan against us, then they drop off 2 MI's near Warwick. Kill them.

Mauch Chunk market -> cav.
Coventry aqueduct -> market.

Kente is founded near old Ceasarea. This area is pretty secure, we have a couple of armies there and some other stuff.

Our situation is quite good, with the exception of the lack of coal.

Next player, try to get a couple of settlers from someplace and plop down a couple of more towns around Kente. I could probably squeeze in 3-4 towns in that area...

We could try to take out Byz'es capitol, we have enough units for it. Checked with Theodora and Reading for peace is doubtful right now, there's an unconnected source of coal there. If we raze a couple of more cities we might get it?

I have it. Settlers & coal. Sounds like two good goals. I'll have it posted by the end of the evening.

Pre-flight – 800 AD - Goz wants settlers and coal. First I shop our WM around, and collect several maps, 65G & 3 gpt. We make peace with Isabella and she pays us for it. Same with Mao. Japan still won’t talk to us. And Theodora is doubtful giving us one of her coal cities.

Next I check that we have two defenders in every city. OK. Switch three minor cities to a settler. Rush two.

IBT – Seven Byzantines are dropped off next to Warwick.

810 – Kill two of those Byzantines and get our cities covered. Here’s the situation:
Goz10_-_810_AD_Sitrep.JPG

IBT – We hold at Warwick of course, but we lose three. The Byzantines drop off another force next to Chondate. Abe and Lizzy want us to fight the Sumerians. No thanks. Then Lizzy signs a peace treaty with Gilamesh.

820 – Kill five rifles in Constantinople. There is at least a sixth.

Kill two of the invaders at Warwick.
Here is the situation at Chondate. We killed one invader there. Note the stray from the Warwick task force.
Goz10_-_820_AD_Sitrep.JPG

IBT – A third invasion force is behind our lines now. We barely hold on at Warwick.
Make a furs for saltpeter deal with the Hittites.

830 – Kill two more defenders at Constantinople, but we can’t take the city. I sue for peace. I get two slaves and 80G. Decide to set up for our last English war.

IBT – Predictably Theodora demands that we leave.

840 – Start setting up for the English war. Found an aggressive Kiohero.

850 – Sell Astronomy to Abe for Silks and some chicken scratch.

After Action Report – Sorry, didn't get any coal, and I only settled one questionable city.

We are set up to take out England in a few turns.

There is an army in that galleon. And the second portion of the assault:

850 AD (0) - Playing as an agricultural civ, there is no reason to mine desert when there plains available to be mined instead. Mining a desert just throws away part of our trait bonus. I am also not entirely clear why we are doing 10% research instead of one scientist research.

IT - England and Carthage make peace. Theodora completely disregards the fact that it is our land as she marches units over towards English cities (one of the few things that I really like about Civ4 is that this doesn't happen).

860 AD (1) - Take Oka without losses.

goz10_860AD.jpg

Drop off our cav army on Liverpool's doorstep. Also wonder what is going on with our worker groups, as there are a lot of inefficient assignments.

870 AD (2) - Liverpool is captured, though had we been one turn later and the AI a bit smarter, it might have become the Byzantine's, as they had two cavalry and two rifles outside the city, which was only defended by two pikemen.

goz10_870AD.jpg

880 AD (3) - Owego founded. Another city which was to be founded cannot, as I realize that the marsh extends onto that tile. Oops.

890 AD (4) - Take Newcastle, I think it was. Don't really remember the name at the moment.

900 AD (5) - Finish off the English.

goz10_900AD.jpg

Okay, so there are some settlers running around, as well as some cavalry to be the two defenders. We may want to start building some cheaper units to defend our cities though. Still no coal available for trade. It looks like we'll have to go out and get some for ourselves soonish.

save

Pre-Turn
we want coal, the Hittites have it but the problem is we have a deal going on for another 12 turns, in fact we have deals with
almost everyone going on
Byz has massive amounts of money, but the issue is that after establishing an embassy can spot their infantry
trade some stuff with China for our income

I don't think the Pentagon is useful at the moment, we rather have more Cav to fight Byz or whoever

1. 910AD
Byz is slowly leaving our land, good so we might want to fight them

2. 920AD
Byz is now in anarchy, wouldn't that be a great moment to attack them?
trade 171gpt for 1700g ask them to leave and they declare, kill almost all units in the hinterland
we can now afford a safe steal from Sumer and get industrialization

3. 930AD
defeat a few units, but nothing much
move a stack towards Byz capital

4. 940AD
moving

IT Byz response so far pretty lame :)

5. 950AD
a deal has ended and we make now 321gpt
our stack is now next to Byz capital with a Cav army coming to help out
trade Carthage industri and 1100g + 150gpt for nationalism, crazy

6. 960AD
play one more turn to see whether we can actually get the Byz capital
get some of our maney back (600g) that changed hands to Sumer via 2 luxes
attack with cannons and get 2 inf down to 3hp, defeat two 3hp inf with our Cav army
lose a cav, win with elite Cav
win against two 2hp inf with knight army
another Cav wins. 2 Cavs retreat, defeat another 2hp inf and last elite cav defeats 4hp cav and

goz10960.jpg

city has Leo's, but of course flip risk will be too high, maybe we should raze city next turn
after upgrading a few muskets
make peace with Byz and get another 660gold for that :)

electricity is still very expensive, because it's a monopoly, Byz also has RP as we have seen

BH & Rat - Very quick work. Nice work too. I hate to do it, but I agree that the flip risk is too great. We need to abandon Constantinople and resettle.

It looks like this game is really motoring again.

I really like having Leo's and so would strive to keep Constatinople, which was a great coup to take against infantry. It is tricky as we are at peace with the byzantines so a recapture is tough. Pillaging all the adjacent land should ensure that defenders after a flip are just rifles.

Well, I actually looked at the save. We haven't won yet. Keeping constantinople looks hopeless. I think we ought to give peace a chance (bar a bit of gunship diplomacy).

We desperately need coal. I think getting Japan's coal looks the easiest method, although it isn't easy as they are far away.

Regarding tech, if you have the stomach (and luck) for it then stealing will be good. Once we get espionage we can steal with spies and the odds will improve a lot. Is it worth revolting to Communism (veteran spies etc)?
