Goz7 - The Squeeze Rematch

Oh well, it is clear to me now, and since it was caught, didn't really cost us anything.

Thinking about it, I suppose it is possible the AI I was thinking of only had a couple coastal towns, so they might not have had a harbor of their own.

Got it and hope for saltpeter close enough for us to grab it :)

Pre-turn - Looking good.

860AD - We learn Gunpowder, of course there's no saltpeter.

Turn off research for a turn so we can rush a couple of temples next turn. Swap Mari to settler.

870AD - Rush temples in 2 border towns.

880AD - Spain and Dutch Sign peace.

Borders expands and pinch a gem from Spain.

Maya razed Madrid.

Declare war and raze a forgotten spanish town. Lost a MI and elite bowman. Capture 6 slaves.

Research Astronomy, due in 5t.

890AD - 2 MI's die and we kill 2 muskets in Jaen, still a LB there.

Khorsabad founded.

900AD - Raze Jaen and get 2 more slaves.

910AD - Spain is down to one city and won't talk.

920AD - Babsby founded and we have 2 extra gems.

Spain are willing to talk, so what can I do here?

Astronomy and Banking from Maya for spices, gems and 23gpt.
I give our only wines to Maya for their incense, 3gpt and 20g.
Sell gems to Portugal for 363g and WM.

Peace with Spain, we get Chemistry for WM and 386g. They pay 50g for ROP, I take it.

This allows me to establish embassy with Egypt, aren't they lucky puppies with 3 saltpeter, 3 iron and 2 horses. Thebes is pop 8 with 9 rifles in the city :lol:

I sell spices and ROP to Dutch for 149g, a bit cheap it seems, but they don't pay much for the luxury. And we want an embassy with Portugal too, just to keep the AI on a friendly foot with us.

Lisbon is pop 12, they have 1 saltpeter and 1 iron plus 4 horses! Half a dozen rifles in town.

Interestingly, Maya and Spain are the only ones not being able to sign MPP's.

I don't want to lock us in any huge gpt-deals, so I continue research on Physics at 50%, due in 7 turns.

930AD - So much for throwing away over 100g on an embassy with Portugal, they demand 21g.
16 Portuguese ships pass on our east coast!

Found another town.

Amazing, I can actually squeeze out 6g for our WM. No one has started to rail yet, so we are not that far behind. We are 4 techs from the next age and a ticket in the lottery. If we only could get there soon.

950AD - Egypt and Portugal would buy our spices again and some deals can be made.

Cleo is furious with us again for no special reason, it's silly. :confused:

4 turns left on Physics.

I'm getting slightly optimistic even if our luck with resources has been lousy. If we only can stay out of war against Egypt and the likes and if we can get in to next age fairly quickly, things will look brighter. Our culture is slowly creeping up and only Maya as usual is a beast.

Did you make any deals, or did you leave this for Greebley? This may save us some time toward the next tech. :D

The deals ended my last turn and I left it to Greebley play around with the options.

I took a look at the game. I can pretty much sum up my feelings very easily. Our military strength sucks. We have 31 cities and 30 military units. I don't think we can win this without a war with The Maya. They have almost as many cities and many more buildings with the 1000 years bonus. We will need to raze Maya cities to win this one.

Our territory has improved nicely thanks to Spain. What I don't see is how to get enough to out do the Mayan and Egyptian culture.

Here is praying we have coal. That will go a long way toward helping us out.

Preturn: We have tax collectors rather than scientists. I prefer scientists since you get 3 beakers instead of 2 gold. Since gold and science is essentially interchangeable by lowering science, we might as well get 3 instead of 2 provided we are doing research. It may get us the tech earlier or allow us to lower the rate further.

I do the trades: Spices to Egypt for 157 gold
spices, 157 gold, and 9 gpt to portugal for physics.

I am going to build military units.

Early: I think we need faster units. I get Horses from Portugal for 30 gpt to start building some.

Mid: Get Magnetism and start Metallurgy.
Build two agressive towns. Having second thoughts about them though...

Late: Nada.

Notes:
I would not bother building unis and cathedrals just for culture. We need Military first I think.

I would like to attack Mayans if we can. They are at war with everybody so we have a decent chance of Razing some towns.
I would go for Theory of Gravity after Metallurgy. Lets get our free tech and see if anyone doesn't have it.
Egypt has Steam. I traded maps on the last turn.

I have it. Suppose we'll need to almost win a domination victory to get 100K. More military coming up.

Suppose we'll need to almost win a domination victory to get 100K.
I don't know about that. With the tightly packed towns we won't get close to 66% land.

However, we do need to trim the Maya. They are STLL growing culture faster then us. We have the same problem with Egypt.

I took a look at the game. I would give Magnetism to Spain for Chivalry, wm and $109. I would very much prefer cavalry, but I would like some type of fast unit. We don't have to buy the horses now, but I am a firm believer of keeping your options open. Spain won't research anything new for us, so we may as well take what we can.

I would like to upgrade that spear and bowman. Disband the regular warrior. We are getting back into the GPT zone and I don't want to waste money on junk units.

Looking like a mega-feast heading into superbowl weekend. I am close on several LK games. Since my Eagles are in the bowl this year, you KNOW I will watch it. I hope to be busy most of Saturday.

Pre-flight – 1050 AD – It doesn’t look like Isabella is long for this world so I sell her magnetism for chivalry, 109G & WM. Use the cash to hurry temples in Ashur and New Ashur. WM reveals that Egypt has some rails. Our culture is about the same as Portugal. We may be able flip those cities. Change Nineveh to a settler.

Early – Egypt & the Mayans sign a treaty. Portugal declares on the Mayans
Nineveh: settler=>bank
Eridu, Eulbar: MDI=>MDI
Zariqum: pike=>MDI
Ashur, New Ashur: temple=>library
Babylon: treb=>settler
Sippar: harbor=>market

Middle – Science comes down, use the cash to rush a temple in New Ellipi and New Akkad.
Found Leeruk. Found Bedeveh.
Sell Cleopatra gems for 9gpt. Sell gems to Henry for Ivory
Egypt declares on the Dutch. The Mayans destroy the Spanish.
Metallurgy=>ToG
Babylon: settler=>settler=>settler
Ellipi: pike=>pike
Karana: harbor=>treb
Nippur: pike=>market
Eulbar: MDI=>settler
Zariqum: MDI=>MDI
Izibia: worker=>worker
New Ellipi, New Akkad: temple=>library
Larsa: library=>barracks
Shurrupak: Market=>treb

Late – Our Wines for incense deal runs out and I let it.
Ellipi: pike=>pike
Eridu: MDI=>MDI
Samarra: treb=>treb
Akkad: harbor=>treb
Babylon: settler=>MDI
Nimrud: treb=>treb
Eulbar: settler=>treb

After Action – We’re presently making about 189 culture per turn. That would put us over the top in 461 turns. I think we should continue the culture creep into Mayan lands and up north.

Here’s the northern situation:
Goz7_-_1150_North.JPG

The settler is in place to put pressure on the Dutch. We may also want to continue a build up to go to war with the Portuguese and poach those two city spots. That would also pave the way to getting the saltpeter on Egypt’s island.

Here’s the southern situation:
Goz7_-_1150_South.JPG

With cultural expansion at Bedeveh we can probably get the southern red dot. We may be able to get a flip on those former Spanish cities. The only Mayan horse source is of course very close. If we could withstand the cav onslaught we could grab those horsies.

Some of those placements can lead to war.

I have seen this occur when you place cities within the 20 squares another civs can place its citizens. I don't know that they will declare war with 100% certainty; the chances are definitely much higher though. I would rather not give them first strike.

In other words, I would prefer to declare war ourselves than risk some of the suggested sites.

On the other hand, maybe it doesn't matter as Bevedeh is already within the danger zone. So maybe it doesn't matter. We should be ready for a Mayan war.

I don't like the one near the Netherlands. Lets just consider a fast war instead with Portugal, and then them later on rather than provoking a war now.

[Edit: Changed the wording a bit]

1150 AD
I don't like most of our spices sitting idle. I give Egypt spices for $155. This upgrades 2 bowmen to longbows. Spices and $30 go to Portugal to save 3 turns on Theory of Gravity. I can't figure out a deal with the Maya.

We draw Steam Power as our free tech. It is worthless to trade, and we have no coal. There is NO coal to even be bought. :mad:
No civ has Medicine, so I start research on that.

We already have high unit costs. I don't want to pay for junk and our warrior is disbanded. I play to upgrade all the bowmen.

Some of the cities go to courthouse where the corruption is bad, but recoverable. Cities that can grow larger go to churches. We can use the culture with the goal to win, and larger cities and more revenue. We love the king reduces corruption, and we need more marketplaces. I swap most military to pikes. I would like at least one token defender per city.

We should emphasis giving our lower corruption cities workable tiles. I hate seeing low corruption cities with specialist.

How did the capitol get down to size 5? Our most productive city was near size 10 before.

1170 AD
Egypt suddenly has coal for sale and I buy it for $37/turn. I would really like a military rail-net

1180 AD
New Uruk is formed.

1220 AD
(IT) Egypt and Netherlands sign a peace treaty.

1240 AD
(IT) Portugal demands TM and $20 and gets it. The ONLY reason he we weren't quite ready for another war. We are getting close.

==========================

Summary:
I normally don't go to communism. However, I really wonder if this empire should. If so, the core cities should get courthouses.

The lack of natural coal sucks. I think we MUST keep buying it from Egypt. Our future wars really depend on concentrated firepower gained from a railnet. In addition we can now make desert useful at 2 food, and better work the mountains. I almost completed the railnet. I haven't started on improving city production, clearing forest (worthless with rails), etc.

I almost completed the goal of a pikeman per city. We still need to pull out MDI as defenders.

We now make the same amount of CPT as Egypt. Keep the culture building.

IT - Medicine learned by Egypt I guess, and Netherlands get it too. Maya seem to be falling behind a bit.

1255 AD (1) - New Eridud founded up by the Dutch. I fill it with units. If the Dutch declare, oh well, what will they do? Other than give us war happiness, I mean. We have an RoP with them where we give spices. Don't know why. Medicine goes from 12 to 6 turns.

IT - Mayans demand spices. I cave. I have been watching their cavalry run back and forth. Last turn, the most I could get from them was World Map and 6g, so we didn't lose much.

1270 AD (4) - Portugal gets Medicine, drops Medicine to 1.

1275 AD (5) - Learn Medicine. Sanitation is the only unknown tech we can research, so start on that, due in 15 at -20gpt. Then, drop it to 14. Corrupt cities with citizens on mountains can instead be set to scientists. No food loss, no shield loss, no commerce lost.

IT - Oh good, the Maya learn Medicine. And four cavalry enter our territory.

1280 AD (6) - Move some pikeman down into the danger area.

IT -

goz7_1285AD.jpg

1285 AD (7) - It seems the Maya are just pretending we have an RoP and using our territory to get to the Portuguese. So I give them an RoP, to make it quicker. Somewhat belatedly, it occurs to me that just taking the Portuguese land would be better. Leave or declare, they declare. Raze Miami, lose one MI. Raze Dzibulsomethingmayan, losing two MI.

IT - Portugal drops off eight cavalry. Mayans don't deal with them as I expected. Egypt starts ToE.

1290 AD (8) - New Samarra founded. Kill the cavs without losses, get a few promotions to elite.

IT - Nine separate galleons, each with a frigate or two escort, drop off one cavalry each by Nineveh.

1295 AD (9) - Found New Eulbar. RNG turns really nasty, and unit support costs plummet.

IT - Four more cavs. I wasn't really expecting this level of troops when they are at war with the Maya.

1300 AD (10) - Unit costs drop some more.

Well, things didn't quite turn out as I hoped. Quite a few MI lost. No WW, but we are a bit weaker than before.

JB - I think that was a good decision to go to war with the Portuguese. We should be able to get peace soon.
