Goz7 - The Squeeze Rematch

Preturn- I fortify the settler.

IT- A few Spanish MDI come towards us.

T1 70

Take out one MDI.

IT- zzz

T2 90

Larsa founded.

IT- We learn Republic and revolt.

T3 110

Not much to do yet.

IT- We become a Republic, and I'm greeted by over 40% War Weariness. Yuck. Still better than despo though.

T4 130

Even with the WW, 20% is enough to fix it. I set our research to Literature, due in 4 turns at 30%.

We lose a few Bowmen attacking MDI.

IT- Spain land an MDI next to Babylon.

T5 150

Try my best to kill the unit, but luck, two bows die doing zero damage. Our fate lies in the RNG now. We're fight a war of attrition, and we can't do that at this stage.

IT- The civs gods like to toy with me, as the MDI next to Babylon manages to redline the defender at Eulbar before finally keeling over.

T6 170

Bombard invasive forces as much as possible. I would love to go on a trip to Santiago, but the Spanish just keep coming with more and more units.

IT- Spain land another damn MDI next to Babylon. I can't take this :crazyeye: We also complete the FP.

T7 190

This time I manage to kill the bastard invader. We face a large attack on the IT.

IT- The Spanish bastards raze Carchemish. They also land an MDI by Nineveh

T8 210

WW jumps again, and we are simply being overrun. We need time to regroup. Provided Spain doesn't get Saltpeter, we should have another good chance in 20 turns. I make peace, getting 5g from them.

I switch pretty much every city to Libraries as they are so very very cheap. In a few turns we can expect a cultural and research explosion. Once the Libs are in we need a lot of Bowmen and cats so we can sack Santiago in a quick strike and then hold the area.

We're now researching Currency, due in 4 turns.

IT- zzz

T9 230

Nothing new.

IT- Our golden age ends. I honestly forgot we were in one :lol: We get one riot, rest are fixed.

T10 250

Not much new.

Summary

We still have a good chance to grab the iron in about twenty turns, I think. As long as we have enough cats and Bows, we should be able to take Santiago. We still desperately need that iron. Without it we're toast.

I agree that not getting the iron from Spain sucked. We do need better units to keep expanding, and Spain is the primary target for a while. I think next time we need a catapult SoD.

The good news is we now hold a probable monopoly on spices. This should really help trading in the future. This variant requires sheer number of cities to win and we have more spaces to build cities in the north.

Did you notice that Spain is still in 2 wars. Do you suppose most of their troops will leave the front? :satan:

What is sad is we a cultural losing at the moment. We really need to libraries and more culture.

I'm happy we're still alive :) A valiant try to grab the iron and we are Republic. Plus we have those spices, so we might be able to trade something for it.

I've got it.

Pre-turn - Sort out some minor things and lower science to 30%, Currency still in 4 turns.

:wow: Egypt have maps! They would give Currency for WM, I take it. (edit: I gave them some gold too, but don't remember what?)
Self-research would cost around 190 beakers and 4 turns. Research Map-making at 30%, due in 6 turns.

I see a red city, it's Roman and we haven't even met them yet.

Set Nineveh to market.

260AD - Ellipi library -> market.

Dutch knows how to trade maps too, I give them our WM for their TM.

270AD - Nimrud is founded -> temple.

More civs knows Navigation and I can buy some stuff. Iron or horses? I suppose we have to get iron as we won't wander too far anyways.

I don't want to feed Spain, so I buy iron from Egypt for spices, WM, 17gpt and 10g.
Buy Construction and incense from Maya for 30gpt and spices.
Give spices and 1gpt to Dutch for MapMaking.

We are in Middle Age and get Feudalism as our free tech.

Nineveh gets a scientist, the only specialist needed for now.

We are doing 12gpt atm.

280AD - Babylon library -> market.

A freebie! Dutch establish an embassy in our capitol :)

290AD - Uruk library -> MI.
Samarra library -> MI.
Eulbar library -> harbor.
Nippur library -> galley.
Zariqum library -> barracks.

290AD - Our next spice is online and we can lower luxtax to 10%.

300AD - Not much.

310AD - Egypt completes Copernicus.

Spain and America sign peace.

Akkad library -> settler.
Eridu library -> MI.

Use 80 of our 83g to rush the galley, so we can meet those elusive Romans. It was that or embassies...or get it demanded away.

320AD - Spain sign peace with Dutch as well :(

Rome completes the Great Library.

Nippur galley -> pike.

Egypt have 5.5k gold. :twitch:

330AD - Nineveh market :bounce: -> settler.

With the extra income we can turn up research to 20%, Engineering in 17 turns. No one wants to sell it for 39gpt, it's only doubtful.

I manage to get 14g for WM of Maya, rush temple in Larsa for 64g. We need to expand the borders around there.

340AD - Larsa temple -> worker.

350AD - Spain and Egypt sign alliance against Maya.

What's going on with our people, this is the third palace-expansion I got in a few turns.

Our galley is a few turns from the Roman city.

We have a couple of workers ready to start roading the last spice.

Nice going! :goodjob:

It would appear the civ gods don't entirely hate us. Getting Feudalism is a real lifesaver. I like our chances with Medieval Infantry a lot better than with Bowmen. Now we just have to make use of them before eveyone has rifles...which by the sounds of it might not be too far off.

Use 80 of our 83g to rush the galley, so we can meet those elusive Romans. It was that or embassies...or get it demanded away.
I would have been very happy with an embassy. Knowing whom is at war is really important for us.

I see the spice monopoly is already starting to pay. Now we have to get our OWN iron.

I would have been very happy with an embassy. Knowing whom is at war is really important for us.

You rather build embassies than finding all civs? :confused:

Preturn: Switch to more Military. Lower Science to 10% so we can afford an embassy.

Early: A volcano takes out a Spanish city.
Mid: Build More Military.

430 AD: Our peace deal with Spain is over. Mayans will give us a discount if we Ally with them vs the Mayan. I do so and buy world map at the same time for 8 gpt and some gold.

Ouch we still have war weariness after 20 turns.

Kill two units in our territory. Move on Iron town.

440 AD: Lose more units than we should taking the iron city. Raze it and plant our own. We now own Iron.
I can raise science back to 20% due to unit losses.

IBT: Longbow shows up

450 AD: Our MDI does 1 hp attacking the Longbow.

Notes:
War Weariness already has increased. I don't know why we had so much WW still even though I waited for peace to expire. I have to raise Lux to 30% already. If I had known about the WW I wouldn't have made the alliance. My hope in making the alliance was that Mayans would be recently committed and less likely to drop out.

Our RNG for the war so far has been absolutely terrible.

On the plus side Spain is taxed by the war with Maya. We have hopes to take them out if we plug away at the war.

We are religious - I would switch to Monarchy

I got a chance to look at the game.

1) America is screwed as the desert town of Miami is there whole empire.

2) Cash reserve of $8 and we are on negative research? We will lose a worker and building to a demand.

Sorry gents, I almost dropped the ball here. I have it.

Pre-flight – Science goes to zero for a turn. Zariqum and Nineveh are changed to settlers. Zamua is changed to a temple. The Dutch have a ton of cash.

IBT - The Mayans and Yanks sign a treaty. Then Smoke comes knocking and wants a MA against the Romans. We can’t get anything out of it, so I say “No thanks”
Produce a cat.

1. 460 AD – Found Gozabad. Given our variant we we’ll need to raze any cities and be able to replace it as soon as possible. I will wait to march on Santander until I have a combat settler available. Science back up a notch with positive cash flow.

IBT – Netherlands declares on Egypt.
Nimrud: temple=>cat
Akkad: cat=>cat
Sippar: worker=>cat

2. 470 AD – Change Samarra to a settler.

IBT – Nineveh: Settler=>MDI
Ellipi: cat=>cat
Eridu, Nippur: MDI=>MDI

3. 480 AD – We’ll march on Santander next turn.

IBT – Babylon: MDI=>settler
Uruk: MDI=>MDI
Samarra: Settler=>Cat
Zariqum: settler=>MDI

4. 490 AD – Start the march on Santander. Conquistadors have appeared. I hate those things. I cover everything within six squares of the boarder. In theory those SOB’s could strike as far inland as Bablyon. My Santander force would not be as large as I would have liked, so we wait.

IBT – The Conquistador goes to Nimrud and is killed by a Bow.
The Dutch build Bach’s.

5. 500 AD – The Mayans have the Spanish horses, so we may not see too many more. Found Hindana.

IBT – Spain declares on the Portuguese. Spain signs an MA with Egypt and then she wants to talk. We can get one city in a peace deal, but no techs. Sorry Izzy, no deal.
Ellipi< Mari: cat=>cat

6. 510 AD – Bump science up another 10%.

IBT – An Egyptian galley sails down our east coast.
Babylon: settler=>MDI
Nineveh, Eulbar: MDI=>MDI

520 AD – Bring science down and hire some beakerheads. I’m walking a thin line on our budget.

IBT – The Portuguese destroy the Americans. A lone Spanish LB sallies forth.
Larsa: worker=>worker

530 AD – Nada

IBT – An Egyptian MDI is dropped off next to Babylon.
Build two cats.

540 – Lose a bow to the MDI, then kill it with a warrior in a desperate move. Marching on Santander, we spot another Conquistador. Cover as necessary. I have 15 cats, 12 MDI and a bow in the task force. We’ll be facing muskets in a hill town.

IBT – The Conquistador attacks and retreats. An LB attacks our stack and dies. Another LB runs into the city.

550 – Kill the conquistador.

@ Santander – Cats go 5 for 15. There are five muskets defending plus the LB. Incredibly we only lose two MDIs attacking the city. I was ready to stop if we lost six. We raze the city. Get four slaves, plus one of our workers back.

Found Tell Wilaya just north of the ruins.

After Action – I’d say Vitoria is our next target.

550 AD
We are researching Engineering, but can sell maps. That pretty much sums up our tech situation. We have 8 turns of mandatory war due to alliance with the Maya. We are already suffering war weariness. 40% luxuries would halt research so I am forced to kill productivity and add specialist.

Our cities are dangerously stripped of defenders with other AIs walking through our territory. At the moment I can't do a thing about this. What is sick is we are paying $68/turn in unit costs despite the lack of defenders.

We need churches now for the culture and happy help. I cancel many of the military builds for buildings. We are heading to economic collapse and need to get our cities to size 7, harbors in coastal cities, etc.

I ship Spices to Portugal to save 3 turns on Engineering and get a better world map. Sadly I can't pull of any other deals with our spices.
(IT) The conquistador kills the sacrificial bowman that stopped from getting to a city.

560 AD
I kill that annoying conquistador, but lost a bowman and have a 1 hp MDI exposed.

570 AD
(IT) Why the #&%#@ not. Rome and Egypt ally against us.
Portugal has completed Smith's. The tech picture is worse then I even realized.

580 AD
(IT) :eek: Egypt is building Newton's. :eek:

590 AD
(IT) I have no idea why the people think our palace should be improved.

600 AD
There are 2 more conquistadors visible.
(IT) We get lucky and one dies, and the other retreats at Nimrud.

610 AD
Vitoria is razed for the ground for $1 and 4 workers. 2 more turns, and I can escape this war.

The conquistador defends better and kills the elite attacking MDI.
(IT) Portugal and Netherlands ally vs. Rome.

620 AD
Karana is formed.
I sign peace with Egypt for $89 and $2/turn. I can't take the chance that they would ally with the Maya vs. us.
(IT) The Maya betray us and sign peace with Spain.

630 AD
I sign peace with Spain and get Monotheism. We are hopelessly behind and tech and drowning in GPT cost. The next war will see catapults pretty useless so I disband then to get speed up border cities temples. We may get to squeeze a couple more cities in. We need a larger empire to win a 100K game.

640 AD
The Maya and Netherlands ally vs. Egypt. I hope The Maya simply burn troops vs. Egypt.

650 AD
I ship spices and wm to the Maya for Monarchy saving 3 turns. I really wanted a better wartime government. I start research on theology to head toward education.

==========================

Summary:
We need to really push buildings. We need to be able to run no luxuries to catch up in this game.
