We are trying Always war Demigod this time. No special variant.

Settings:
Map: 250x250
AI: All 30 opponents
Civ: Maya
Continents
70% water
No Barbs
Demigod
Random for wet/dry, etc.

Standard AW: Must declare war as soon as we have contact with no trades, but we can look at our opponents, their techs, etc.

I also realized we played last game with 'more aggressive' AI. I thought I would try that again.

I played until we got Warrior Code and our UU. Built a very early Granary. We are on turn 38. Gambled on not making contact and we still don't though we do have a neighbor that we will meet before long.

We should discuss next tech. If we want the GLib we may want a prebuild pretty soon. I set to Alphabet because we could either go for GLib or Math. We have a defense 2 unit already - our UU so thought BW could be put off. Also our chances for Iron look low so far.

My feeling is to go for Alphabet first and then we can judge if we think the GLib is a possibility (we will know how long writing will take).

We need more workers. I think our capitol should build one soon.

We may also need walls, more towns, more Jav's. Our town can be a settler factory, but we need units. We grew past size 7 building the Barracks and the Javalin.

Wow that is a close neighbor, I hope we do not have anyone else real close. Could be Hiawatha, so lets hope he does not have horses right away.

GLB will be a long shot with us not starting with Alpha. We could get a break and no one grabs Lit for a time. Not too bad of land with at least wheat and one cow, but no hills in sight.

I would think you are correct we can pop a worker out as we are going to grow fast and have no lux for who knows how long. We probably can go a bit light on workers as we have industrious trait and the JT to get us slaves, after the first few workers are ahnd built.

I must say Good luck and have fun! Your UU will create workers for you before long

I've got it, though I'll wait a bit for further comments before playing.

Good call on the early granary--I always believe in this. :goodjob:

I agree with Alphabet as our next tech choice.

lurker's comment: I'm going to be watching this one. You guys teach me something every time I read along

1750 BC, end of turn: View attachment 174704

BTW, I was refused permission to upload the save in the old way, and forced to do it as an attachment. Is this some new development since I last posted a file? And are attachments large enough for our games now?

2230 (0): I cancel Palenque's worker build, since we don't need to deprive this town of ten turns' worth of population growth when we can pop workers out of the capital so quickly.

Chichen Itza JT --> worker.

2190 (1): Our purple neighbours are the Iroquois. They have BW, Alphabet, the Wheel, and six cities. We declare war, one of their warriors having appeared.

CI worker --> JT.

2150 (2): Copan barracks --> JT.

2070 (4): We spear an Ir warrior with a JT and enter our three-city Golden Age (1-0).

An Ir warrior defeats one of our warriors in the capital, though the town is at size seven (1-1).

CI JT --> JT.

2030 (5): We skewer the depleted Ir warrior outside CI (2-1).

An Ir warrior falls attacking Copan, and for the moment no enemy units are visible (3-1).

1990 (6): A forest chop near Palenque reveals BG. This also happened earlier next to Copan.

1950 (7): Copan JT --> walls, Palenque barracks --> JT.

1910 (8): We account for two Ir warriors outside Copan, gaining our first two slaves and our first promotion to elite (5-1).

Outside CI we go just 1-1 against Ir warriors, though we do gain yet a third slave (6-2).

CI settler --> JT--a minor gamble, but we can't abandon settler production altogether.

1870 (9): Copan walls --> JT.

1790 (11): We cut down an Ir warrior outside the capital (7-2).

CI JT --> settler.

1750 (12): A Viking warrior appears, and we declare war. Ragnar has CB, BW, Alphabet, the Wheel, and seven cities.

We found Tikal in a relatively safe spot to the NW, with a lot of BG.

One elite victory this round didn't produce a GL.

Six JT victories generated three slaves.

We should produce settlers and JT alternately out of the capital. We're only under moderate pressure and we can't neglect expansion.

Copan looks like the right place for the GLib pre-build, which is why I've built walls there.

13 cities between them already. BTW if I get the game on weekends and someone else needs to play on weekends, I can swap as any day works for me now.

NP, the site was attacked and that's why they shut down the convenient upload feature...a real pity

Anyway, this will be a tough game with such early contacts. This could cost us the GL...luckily we get free slaves to save the day. maybe we can get an early army to boot.

Thanks for the answers, gentlemen.

Looking good so far.

The 250x250 map means the density is similar to normal maps. Two contacts is pretty good compared to what I am used to for these games. I think it mostly is due to the lack of huts which I have been including before.

Avoiding all contacts for this long would be a rare game - us on a penisula perhaps.

The AI can trade the first level techs pretty quickly, but the tech rate is slow even for the AI. It will take them some time. Still they may have writing before we get alphabet.

I think the GLib worth the gamble. It will make such a difference and even at deity level you can sometimes pull off an ancient wonder. Our biggest danger is the larger number of civs will lead to someone going for Lit sooner on average than fewer civs.

I don't mind two contacts, but having towns so close this soon, is another story. I had forgotten you played something like 30 turns.

1725BC- Trondheim finishes Colossus.

1700BC- Axe 2 Iro warriors at Chichen Itza. Behead a Vike warrior at Copan for a slave.

1600BC- Conquer an Iro archer by Copan.

1575BC- Destroy an Iro warrior in the wilderness north of CI.

IBT- Lose the 2hp JW to an Iro archer in the wilderness.

1550BC- Eliminate Iro archer by Copan. (6-1)

1525BC- Yaxchilan founded.

We have 6 cities now and a settler by Tikal.

1500BC- Bonampak founded

Our military didn't grow much. I wanted to get CI down in pop so it can grow normally. Something of a calculated gamble in leaving Yaxchilan empty. Next up can start moving troops to cover, but Paleneque will have a JT in 3.

Pre:
I see we have 4 workers and 4 slaves. So I switched the worker in Copan to settler. I seemed to recall some talk about making a prebuild for the GLB in Copan and wanting to build it up. It is very slow gowing right now though.
5/5 JT kills warrior (1-0).

IBT:
2/3 archer on mountain heals and heads for the warrior defending the slaves. It is now 3/3 archer.

1475BC:
5/5 jt kills that archer (1-0).

IBT:
Vike start Pyramids.

1450BC:
nothing

1425BC:
Found Lagartero, starts warrior.
7 units in sight right now.
3/3 warrior kills Iroq warrior (1-0).
move 3/5 jt to cover warrior.

IBT:
archer attacks and 3/5 jt kills it now redlined.
Start rax in Bonampak, leave jt and warrior to heal (1-0) [4-0].

1400BC:
Larartero start rax after the chop went to it, rather than Yax.
Copan starts JT.
Forgot to mention the GA ended last turn.
Send settler back towards Yax as I suspect we dare not go the other way right now.
Alpha is now at 5 turns and we have 12 gold making +1gpt.

IBT:
Hiawatha is slowing down and parked his two units.
The Vikes have 7 units in our land.

1375BC:
4/4 JT kills Vike warrior and gets slave. (1-0)
Next JT does the same (2-0).
JT kills Vike archer (3-0).
JT kills Vike archer [4-0] [8-0].
The first three were across a river, whew.

1350BC:
Up lux to 30 as CI grows to size 7.
Belay that, drop back to 20 and CI gets a scientist instead. We gain nothing from going to 12 shields at this point and we cannot afford to deficit spend right now. If we need the lux for other towns, then fine.

1325BC:
4/4 jt dies on warrior after getting pinged by archer (0-1).
2 jt's win (2-1), these are against vikes. One goes elite.
3/4 jt kills warrior (3-1) [11-1].

IBT:
Saw something flash by on the north that looked like a barb warrior, so watch out.

1300BC:
5/5 kills Iroq archer at CI (1-0).
5/5 kills Iroq archer at Bonampak (2-0).
Needs some help up there soon as we only have 1 jt and two regular warriors and Hiawatha is liking this town better now. [13-1]

IBT:
Iroq archer attacks the JT at Bonampak (1-0) [14-1]

1275BC:
Sorry to bring the news that we have met an Arabian scout and declared.
So it may have been what I saw, but I still think it was a barb.
New JT out of Tikal kills Iroq archer and goes elite (1-0).
4/5 JT out of Bonampak wins again (2-0).
Found Quiriqua and start warrior, A cow is just outside of this new town.
Writing is in 33 turns, ugh [15-1].
Up research and now in 28 turns at -1gpt.
Swap pop in Yax to scientis as it was unhappy without an MP. Lowers Writing to 25 and send a warrior from Copan to it.

1250BC:
JT kills vike warrior at CI (1-0).
3/5 jt kills vike archer at CI and gets slave (2-0).
jt kills vike warrior at CI (3-0) [18-1].

Need MP in a few places and we have no settlers in hand or being built right now.

7 elites wins. Did get a few elites to work with though.

this must be one the fastest turn arounds...got it
