Gr3 - Mayan Continental AWE

If one civ knows Chivalry already we may get it next IBT or it may be a while which makes it tricky. Your point on building knights is valid. We can always switch the a colony when we actually get Chivalry from the GLib if it comes sooner than we can get a town there.

I would really like us to stop about building wonders. Why handbuilding Leo's instead a lot of knights (yes I know we do not have chivalry yet)? I rarely think it is worth it in an epic game, but almost never in AW(E).

lurker's comment: I agree with Grs. The only wonders I even build are the Great Library which is critical to the early tech race, ToE if the game last that long, and Hoovers. Yes, I built Hoovers in an AW game.

50 AD (0): First off I colonize the iron. Rather have it now and have the option of swords and pikes sooner rather than later. I will do my best to consolidate workers. With soo many out and about it will be tough to protect them the way they are scatered. With 4 more turns of anarchy there isn't too much else to be done. Put all the specialist back to work to avoid further starvation, we will riot then I will fix it. Rinse and repeat to keep population up during the anarchy period.

70 AD (1): Well carthage lands 2 swords near Calakmul and we have zero availble for protection. :( My only option was to possibly attack with the galley before the landing but its too late now. They may do some real damage. Get lucky and find a horse on our southern coast that kills 1 sword. Take out 2 iroquios archers and wound a couple others. Allow the other horses in the area to heal.

90 AD (2): Horse is wounded and retreats from Carthage sword attack. Iroquios are sneaking 2 archer into the south. Kill 3 Iroquios archers up north. Continue to consilidate workers. Take out the lone remainined wounded Carthage sword with a nearby warrior.

110 AD (3): kill a Korean archer in defense, promote and get a worker. Move on a stack of 3 Iroquios archers to the north and take them donw. Have my first loss to a Korean Spear.

130 AD (4): Lose a horse to 2 archers but not before taking 1 of them out and stopping there advance south. Hittites builds ToA, cascades switch to HG. We are now a proud Monarchy, All Hail the King!!! Lot of MM, up lux to 20% and looks pretty good but will require some MPs and some tax men in the short term.

150 AD (5): Chichen builds market starts a pike. 2 turns remain on the FP. Uaxactun builds a galley starts a temple. Change some other builds off of worker to temples. The forward units are resting. Take out the lone archer near the iron colony.

170 AD (6): Nothing to speak of in the inter turn. Lagartero builds a horse starts a pike. Really need the MPs to help keep the peace. The stack is resting and should be ready to hit the local Korean town and take out any more Iroquios archers that come our way. Along that idea kill another 3 Iroquios archers and move some units to hit the Korean town next turn.

190 AD (7): We learn engineering. We complete our FP and start on a Market. Rush a settler out of Uxmal to get the iron town claimed and starting to fill in the North. Raze the Korean town.

210 AD (8): Chichen builds a pike starts another. Tikal a horse starts a pike. Uxmal completes its settler and starts another. Take out a few archers but need to rest between so hold back on straying too far with any one stack.

230 aD (9): Continue to pluck off archers. Using the rested units and allowing last turn units to rest. They just keep on coming. Breaking off a stack to finish off the Koreans to the East and finish scouting the island.

250 AD (10): Carthage makes a landing of a sword and a MDI. Copan build a horse starts a temple. Take out yet more archers. We are relatively secure but would feel better with pikes in towns vs. warriors or worse. We could also use a few more horses to stay back. Have a few now and needed them for the carthage landings. There are a few settlers being built along with a balance of temples and military. Lux is at 20% but with a few more MPs maybe it can be dropped. Have a couple towns with specialists but the main core is all productive.

Sorry about Calakmul landing, though I didn't really pull any units from that area, I didn't add any or move anything. Also sorry about the worker mess I left. Originally I forgot we were industrious then reassigned them, and then anarchy screwed it all up again.

No problems bed. Took out the swords with a horsey I found and was able to reorganize the workers more to my liking. We all have preferences ;).

Tough to do much of anything productive with 9  turns of anarchy. Maybe now we can make SOME progress. I felt like all I managed to do was kill of a dozen or so of the non stop archers. Oh yeah our army is still empty and waiting and we still don't have Chivalry :D.

Preturn: Check over the empire. I think our homeland defense is a bit weak. Heavy landings are not far in the distant future, and it is time to get ready for them. I will concentrate on getting our defense in better shape. Its a good time to do so since we can build pikes now.

I changed away a few towns from temples. I know we are going to want them to help with our lack of lux, but I am worried more at the moment about towns with only warriors as a defender. I some switch to Barracks, Settlers, or units. This is a bit of a value judgement - it will make flips more of an issue, but I want better defense first.

I want to remind people about town placement - we want towns to be within three of other towns so we can shift defenders. This allows us to have fewer defenders in our backlands which means more units on the main front. I mention this as I see the current placement of Ake is sub-optimal. It is not fatal, but putting it one square back would have been a better move for an AW game. The problem is that its an isolated town that is not with 3 of any town. A landing on the peninsula and it is gone. The alternatives are to give it a strong defense so the AI will target other towns, or settle another town between, even though this is a bit of squeeze. Decide to go with an extra town and swith Ake to a settler.

Cheju is also a problem. We need a back fill town and more units down there. A landing of two swords and it is gone.

I think we will soon start seeing heavy landings that will target any weaknesses we have, so it is a good time to start strengthening our defense.

Iroquois have a LOT of towns. Our continent is going to be big.

IBT: Ancient Cavalry is landed near Uxmal. There are few defenders near there (nearby Pusan is empty and no unit can reach the city.), so I need to kill it.

260 AD: Kill the Ancient Cav and an Archer without loss. (2-0). Build a town on top of the iron.

IBT: 5 archers show up.

270 AD: Game Crashes (F3) and I have to restart at the autosave. Kill 2 archers (4-0)

IBT: Iroquois fill in the town location we just destroyed.

280 AD: I am pulling back a bit so we can heal in the town. Right now it takes too long to heal and the Archers just keep coming. I also send workers north to build roads so our units have more easy access to the iron town.

Kill 3 archers (7-0)

IBT: Lots of archers to the North.

290 AD: Kill 3 archers. Lose a Horse to a lousy Barbarian Warrior (10-1)

IBT: Leo's is known so invention is started.

300 AD: Switch some builds to Javelins as we soon may not be able to build them. Their slaving ability makes them useful even late game.

IBT: More archers. A landing of an MDI and an Archer near Pusan.

310 AD: We lose 2! elite horses vs a 1 hp Spear in the forest. Kill the Spear and a 1 hp Archer.
Kill the MDI. (13-3)

IBT: Another landing. 2 Numideans. Only one Trebuchet in the area which hits.

320 AD: Get a leader and form a second Army. Check and it looks like we get Chivalry next turn!
Kill an archer and a Barb Camp (15-3)

IBT: One Numidean attacks and loses. The injured one retreats.
We get Chivalry, Theology and Invention. I think 2 civs met or something.

330 AD: Numidean retreats. I bombard to 1 hp, but a horse fails to kill it (15-4)
Going to spend some money. Rush barracks in the iron town. I will probably upgrade some of the horses (not all).

IBT: Archers are following our units that are heading back to town.

340 AD: Upgrade some Horses to Knights (we have 1 Vet and 2 Elite*). Kill one Archer on our road to the Iron town.
Found Cozumel and renamed new Chichen Itza

IBT: Hittites complete Knights Templar.

350 AD: We form our 2 knight armies (one is back in our core though waiting 2 turns for the next 2 knights). Kill a 7 archers using horses and our army. (22-4)

Notes:
The GLib will give us Gunpowder or Education next. This means it is quite possible that we won't get Gunpowder before Education. I set research to 20% on Gunpowder. It means we will waste a bit if we do get Gunpowder from the GLib, but will also mean we have a good jump start toward Gunpowder/Cavalry if we don't.

I still like the idea of saving money for Science. So on upgrading:

I already upgraded the 4 Elite* and Vet Horses. We have 5 Elite horses. Lets use them for leader fishing. If they become Elite* I am fine with upgrading them.

I would rather not upgrade Spears without a good reason to do so (Better defense in a town that is going to be attacked is a very valid reason to do so for example). We can build Pikes and use the Spear as MP to reduce Lux.

I once sat down and tried to prove that upgrading cats, trebuchets is worthwhile (after doing so in an AW game). My calculations showed that upgrading them is a astonishingly poor way to spend money. Its fine when money is readily available from trading, but it is in general a bad idea when it means slowing down science.

Upgrading regular warriors is right out.

What ever you do, never upgrade Javelins. We can use them to kill weaker units and get free slaves. I actually tried to build more (we only have 5) but Invention came in the same turn they would have completed, so they switched to longbows before building.

When we get Education, put science up to 100% and get us going toward Cavalry until our cash is low again. This will give us a good boost toward getting Cav before the AI. We want to do as much damage as possible with Cavs before Rifles.

I am hopeful with Knights and two armies we can go on the offensive again. Korea has only 2 towns, but the Iroquois have something.

I generally tend to use leaders for 3 armies then Pentagon. I am thinking leaders will be generally available due to the fact we are fighting larger easy to kill archers.

The Iroquois have 25! towns. I am glad they don't have horses. Streams of mounted warriors would be trouble. They don't have iron either, but I think chances are good they may get some with that many towns. They still have more land area than us BTW and are number 1. We lead in population. In general we are in a good position. We are going to be fighting them 1 vs 1 in the land battle which we should be able to win. Once we do win we will have a massive continent to ourselves.

What ever you do, never upgrade Javelins. We can use them to kill weaker units and get free slaves.
Check out a previous LK AW game with the Mayan. As long as longbows are in play, JT can get you more free workers. We had an all JT army that grabbed a lot of free labor.

I think 3 knights benefit us more than the HE at the moment. There are lots of easy to kill units, so we shouldn't really need it. Once we have a more established offense and defense or if we get a free leader, then I would go for it. I used to build the HE too, BTW, but the point above has swayed me, so now I wait.

[Edit: Note that the benefit of the HE can be summarized as:

For every 48 Elite victories you will get 1 more Great Leader on average.

I want to remind people about town placement - we want towns to be within three of other towns so we can shift defenders
I saw that town as well and was wondering already. hope it won't creat problems, luckily it is a bit further from their usual landing spots

esle it looks good, with 2 armies we can hit them a bit. I would like us to fill the voids with towns, for example I can see a yellow spear there in the picture, that would be a good spot to settle a town

There is a settler under that yellow spear
I was hoping so, but here in the office I can't check, just saw the screen shot and it's tough to tell. was the spear attacked? we are lucky then that it survived

am I right, that we wait for barbslinger to take his turn?

Just got back to L.A. My grandfather had a 21 gun, taps with a jet flyover funeral. It was still very hard. I got it and will play Monday night around 7pm. I'll read all entries prior.

It was still very hard
:(

barbslinger, you take your time and play after reading the thread.

I was planning on playin while flying to Minneapolis but when I went to install Conquests on my work laptop I got a message that CIV II had to be loaded prior. I did not bring that with me so I need a skip until Saturday when I get back to LA. I was really looking forward to it too, looks like exciting times ahead.

edit: barbs message changed

ok I got it then, here is chinese new year, and I got 3 days off, good timing
