I have never tried an army in enemy land with no other possible targets.

That was what I thought, which is why I made my guess about whether bombing would occur or not.

Well in one of the LK games when the last remants of Egypt went the AI went full tilt to kill our armies. At that point they were the ONLY civ on the landmass.

1550 (0): I put almost every city which will benefit from a factory onto a pre-build. Since our offensive is stalled, this seems like the right time to suffer through the process of getting factories built.

Our vulnerable army stack isn't bombed in Mongol territory. We lose the isolated cav army, of course (0-1).

The Celts found a new city next to the rubber. We should be able to keep them from hooking it up, though.

Our modest hoard of 732 gold makes us the richest nation on Earth, Pliny reports.

1555 (1): We defeat a Celtic stack of six (three guerrillas, three cav) landed next to New Ghulaman in Arabia (6-1). But we're weak in Arabia, so I send over some reinforcements.

We lose a frigate to the attack of a Man-o'-War (6-2).

1560 (2): We wipe out a Celtic stack of thirteen landed next to Behistun (19-2).

We overrun a single English cav landed next to New Bampur in Egypt (20-2).

The approach of our armies scares two Celtic workers off the rubber tile--though we lose a turn of healing, of course.

1565 (3): We defeat a Mongol rifle/MDI team landed on the desert island (22-2).

1570 (4): Our armies heal.

The Celts are bombing Antioch, presumably from an aircraft carrier.

1575 (5): We eliminate a Celtic stack of four landed between Birka and Behistun (26-2).

We destroy four units from a Celtic stack of six landed near Fustat in Arabia (30-2).

1580 (6): Research down to 0%, Industrialization still due this IT.

We finish off the last two Celtic units in Arabia (32-2).

We get some reinforcements, including the second infantry army and twelve artillery, sailing towards the Celtic continent, in five galleons escorted by ten frigates.

Antioch loses its temple to Celtic bombing.

New Zohak in Arabia becomes a new Celtic bombing target.

Our reinforcement fleet isn't attacked.

Industrialization --> Corporation, due in six turns at 40% research. Espionage comes into consideration too, but it looks as though we can reach Refining (to see where the oil is) under our own power fairly quickly, so I'd rather do that.

1585 (7): I switch eighteen towns over to factory builds. Gordium's completes immediately, as we dump 478 shields from the pre-build. :cringe:

We wipe out an Ottoman stack of three landed next to New Bampur in Egypt (35-2).

We crush a Celtic stack of twelve landed between Birka and Behistun (47-2).

The usual Celtic bombing runs against Antioch and New Zohak.

1590 (8): We crush four Mongol and two Celtic units landed between Birka and Behistun (53-2).

Our armies on the main continent (except for one watching the rubber) and the reinforcements sent by sea unite next to Hovd.

I put together a complete coastal screen (military units only ;) ) on the small desert island, freeing the army there for other employment.

Antioch has lost so many citizens to Celtic bombing it's now in Love status. :D

1595 (9): We take and raze Hovd, held by four rifleman and three cav, gaining four workers (60-2).

In Egypt we kill two English cav landed next to New Bampur (62-2).

This turn's Celtic landing by Behistun is just one guerrilla (63-2).

We squash a Celtic stack of six near Fustat in Arabia (69-2).

Pardon me for only playing nine, but we're at a decision point so this seems like a good place to stop.

Six elite victories this round didn't produce a Great Leader.

Edit: Some confusion between Antioch and Arbela corrected. It's Antioch the Celts have been bombing.

Our forces on the main continent are established on an easily blocked-off peninsula, with a settler in place to replace Hovd (which would give us another lux after a harbour rush), so we have a lot of options. We could attempt the Funnel of Doom with or without a city at the end of the funnel, or just open and close the way to the peninsula to manipulate the Celts' movements. Of course, most or all of these options will get us bombed, but I don't think we should let that make us totally passive. If we do found a city, and then find that our forces can't sustain the bombing, we can just abandon the city and return to the protection of the Mongols' cultural borders, without much being lost.

If we're lucky and alert, we might be able to lure the Celts into basing most of their bombers in Glanum, the only present Celtic city which would be in range of a town founded on the site of Hovd, and then take Glanum.

Also, we have enough armies that we could found a city on the peninsula and then screen it off with armies kept entirely in Mongol territory, which might be advantageous in some situations.

Of course we can finish the Mongols off in our area of operations whenever we want, but this has to be delicately timed, since then we'll lose our only protection from the Celts' bombers.

The one cav army we're keeping in Mongol territory near the rubber has kept the Celts from trying to hook it up, so far.

Eleven or twelve factories should complete during the next round, two as soon as we hit Enter.

Please merge a native worker into Bunyan, and have it work a mined mountain. I didn't get around to this, but it'll speed up the factory build there considerably.

Basically, we can assume that all the mined tundra tiles under our control have been lumberjacked, although I'm not sure about the two adjacent to Charsadda or the two east of Zohak. In Egypt I've been lumberjacking the plains tiles from east to west, and the distribution of the workers will tell you which ones have been done.

We have a cav army at sea, off Dakyanus.

Edit: I should have mentioned that we have an independent inf unit on the peninsula, which can be added to the second infantry army whenever it seems necessary.

We wipe out a Celtic stack of thirteen landed next to Behistun

That is the largest landing yet!

I am really confused on the roster, so I will wait for Greebley to official post one.

Well, we're now back to normal after my double swap, so I'm pretty sure it's:

Greebley (UP)
LK (On deck)
Northern Pike
T McC
ThERat

Regarding the Celtic landing of thirteen, I was definitely relieved when the third transport only disgorged one unit. :D

I like the funnel of doom idea + killing all bombers in Glanum. that should work well. also, it would relieve our core from Celt landings.

Preturn: Going with the town build and try to make a bit of a funnel to it.

Early: Try to make a funnel but only get useless Ottoman dreck.
Work on finishing factories and then stock exchanges.
Build the town and grab Lux.
Mid: Start advancing units towards celts.
Destroy one of the Mongol Towns so I can pass.

Late:
(very last turn) Destroy Glanum which is where the planes to bomb my armies were coming from. Have not seen the IBT to know how many planes remain.

Notes:
My idea was to inch forward and destroy Celt Cities. They are hopefully low on bombers, we will see how many bomb the army next turn. Sticking to mountains and hills as much as possible helps. The Inf army is able to defend well vs bombers on hills. If bombardment starts getting intense, then we can retreat back to enemy lands.

The celts have been dropping off units just outside our barrior near Bridgehead. These then head back into Celt lands.

Note that it is important to keep the two Cavalry armies where they are near Bridgehead. Allow a path to our city and we may get tons of troops.

Landings have been in the "typical spots" We haven't had too many actually.

New Behistun has been a target for the Man-o-wars. I tried putting another rifle in it.

Beware of Subs. A few have gone after any lone boats we have. The bigger stacks remain safe for now.

Not sure why the text is so bad in the picture.

Got it

good progress, now let's hope we can pillage, once we see where the oil is...only 2 turns left

do we all agree to research espionage after that? I think we should go for steals rather than self research for the time being. also, some recon work helps when deciding whether to attack a city. or we could finally monitor the amount of bombers etc.

Good work with the bomber trap at Glanum. :goodjob: If we've substantially reduced the bomber threat we should be able to grind the Celts up, slowly but surely.

Did the Celts keep bombing Antioch and New Zohak, or did this end once we gave them targets on their continent?

I agree with Espionage as our next tech choice.

I like going for espionage. I think we also should have a prebuild.

Make sure I switched the palace prebuild to wall st. I intended to do this but now am not sure I did. We should also start a Intell Agency prebuild. I think we will want it right away.

You must have read me mind. ;)
I just started playing, and was going to post here to figure out what the palace was for. Wall Street is due in 5. Now to hit that magic $1,000 in interest.

How close are we to winning? Are we at our limit of Armies yet?

I'm wondering whether we are better served to put new Armies in English territory and try to take their land, or should new Armies go to the Celtic front? Post-Espionage we are two steals from Combustion, so we would have the capability to move 4-man armies between the two fronts. Whacking Celt cities is harder but allows us a much larger area to re-settle. It is probably best to stay on the Celts and deny them oil. If we can do that we can settle their continent with relative immunity. With so many armies we can decimate anything that ventures outside their cities, and have no fear of losses without facing Bombers.

1650 AD
For the first time in this game I don't like our position. We are in stuck mode and to many units are tied up keeping rubber away from the Celts. Denying rubber to the Celts is good, but not destroying cities is very bad. I really don't want to see nukes this game. At this point I don't think we can stop the Celts from building the U.N.

I merge in a handful of natural workers.
(IT) I didn't see any bombers.

1655 AD
All I can kill is one English cavalry in Egypt. (1-0)
I kill a Mongol frigate / caravel pair. (3-0)
I kill off 3 Celtic frigates. (6-0)

LAK-853.jpg

At least it was a good kill. This army will eventually get over to Mongolia.

1660 AD
 The Celts just got the modern age look.

I decide to start picking off strays units on the main landmass. If we are ever going to head forward their needs to be less units over there. I killed 1 longbow, 2 cavalry, 2 guerillas, and 2 riflemen. (13-0)
I kill 3 Ottoman rifles that landing in Arabia, but 5 more are left simply injured. I didn't have enough bombard hits to feel the risk we worth it on the rest. (16-0)

1665 AD
Well things just got worse. There are now visible Ottoman infantry. The Celts now have a settler next to the rubber with *11* units guarding it. I have no way to kill that stack.

I killed 1 longbow, 2 riflemen and 3 cavalry on the mainland. (20-0)

1670 AD
The landings are serious again. In Arabia I kill the Celtic landing of 2 cavalry, 2 rifles and 2 guerillas. (26-0)
In Persia I kill the Celtic landing of 2 cavalry and 4 guerillas. I lost 1 cavalry vs. a 1 hp guerilla. (32-1)
On the mainland I kill 1 cavalry, 1 guerilla and 3 riflemen. (37-1)
(IT) Wall Street has been completed and we can start earning interest.

1675 AD
I kill 1 cavalry that was guarding a worker. I am not going to let the Celts connect the rubber. (38-1)
I kill 3 Ottoman rifles. (41-1)
(IT) A privateer sank our frigate. (41-2)
The bomber runs get nasty as 6 of them show up.

1680 AD
I sink that annoying privateer. (42-2)

I killed 2 rifles and get the following good news: (44-2)

LAK-854.jpg

I watched several bombers blow up.
I hope there are no more nearby, as I have 2 exposed cavalry armies. I forget to count for the hill when calculating the movement points.

Espionage is completed. We need to discuss the science path before I complete my turns.
The first decision is continue research or steal. If we go with research what choice of the following?
1) Communism for either the improved productivity, or at least the option for police stations in the marginal cities. We can complete it in just 5 turns.
2) Steel can be researched in 8 turns. We can then go for combustion to at least start building a real navy, and then decide on flight or tanks fight. We do need a better navy.
3) I feel Sanitation would be a total waste, as I don't see us building hospitals.
4) I realize Atomic Theory in 11 turns sounds odd, but the Celts have NOT started on Hoover Dam. We may still be able to snag this one. I really don't want the Celts getting a production boast.

I don't know if steals are even worth it when we only need 8 turns to research. We currently have 182 beakers in research and 381 beakers in scientist (127 * 3). If we went pure cash we get $305 cash + 254 in taxmen. This is a careful steal about every 4 turns plus the cost of replanting spies when we fail.

I plan to finish the rest tomorrow after I get input from the team on the direction. I lean toward researching Steel as I don't feel the time to setup Communism is worth it, and I suspect Hoover Dam will continue to not be built.
