Grand Strategy Thread

I think a supporting semi-active role is called for. It is not a good time to make peace with BABE. Unless we cannot get oil we should not make peace until we retake SCI. If it is true that BABE will not give our island back then we must create the forces we need to take it back. My thought is once we get it back BABE will make peace in order to get everyone turned against FREE so GONG can continue unmolested towards 100k.

Since we will need and air force and navy to retake SCI we can use it in a supporting role against FREE.

It seems to me that we are very insistent on getting SCI back. Don't get me wrong - I've been the biggest flagwaver here!

But let's consider the long-term strategic aspect of SCI. Right now we know it contains Rubber, right? Any other resources there that I'm missing? I can't load the save so I'm going on memory here :D

If Babe is willing to GIVE us rubber, unconditionally, then I see no reason we can't settle for peace with no other conditions. If they cease to give us rubber, The Council and Saber will redeclare war on them. Obviously, I've no idea if Saber would agree to this idea ;)

It just seems to me that if Babe is not willing to give up SCI without a fight, but they are willing to fight someone else, then why should our desire for control of SCI hand the game to whoever BABE doesn't attack due to our stubbornness?

I'm not really sure I agree completely with my proposition, but it will, at least, add to the conversation :old:

We do not yet know where the oil lies on this world. We also do not know where the aluminum is and IIRC we'll need aluminum to launch a spaceship. My money says we need SCI for at least one of these two resources.

I'd guess so. Unless they gave it all to us, as a bonus for surviving to the IA :)

Unless they gave it to no one, or gave it to a few, knowing this map we won't know until we can see it.

I never made a map before, do resources need to be on the required terrain squares?

Several times now I've seen people mention lethal bombers. Are we certain that our bombers are lethal? Is this from our UU trait? For that matter, are the other teams' bombers also lethal?

It would be awful if we were operating under an incorrect assumption! :old:

We are concerned about FREE launching a spaceship and GONG reaching 100k before we are ready to launch. Assuming we can't speed our launch enough to over come these threats we have to neutralize them to give us the time we need. There are two ways to deal with each threat.

GONG can be denied a 100k win if someone has at least half their culture. Unfortunately this one looks impossible leaving only the destruction of GONG's culture producing buildings by capturing GONG cities. Most likely the captured cities will have to be razed in order to prevent them flipping back to GONG. This will require an invasion of the GONG homeland and will most likely entail fighting GONG's little friend BABE as well. GONG has over 22K now and are making over 500 per turn and the increase is increasing. They'll have 100k in 156 turns (turn 335) but this doesn't factor in the acceleration of their increase.

FREE can be denied a space ship either by destroying the one they are working on by capturing their capitol city or by slowing down their research and production rate through war. In the latter scenario we can assume that our research and production would also be lowered by the war against FREE. I have no estimates of when FREE will be ready to launch. They have a tech edge right now thanks to ToE and their Golden Age but we should overcome that with our tech alliance with SABER.

I think it is time to consider which threat we take on first. We may be better off addressing GONG first since we are likely to have a tech advantage. By the time we could attack FREE we might be facing mechanized infantry. :( We may have to let FREE continue on a bit and then destroy their capitol (and spaceship) with a nuclear strike then invasion. :nuke:

GONG can be handled without stepping on their shores via bombers.

Actually, I sort of think we may see a BABE, Council, SABER alliance vs. GONG and FREE. BABE has gone from winning to no better than 3rd and possibly behind SABER, as well. I don't see how it is in BABE's best interests, long term, to stay allied to GONG.

I'm reasonably sure that war will come to someone's homeland.

I think FREE is both the biggest threat and the lowest resistance atm. When we last saw their coast, it was not blocked. If BABE entered soon with cavs and rifles, they'd give FREE something to chew with just reg warriors and conscript rifles in hand... :run: :D

@ Paul: What makes you think it would be conscript rifles instead of conscript infantry?

@ AT: Bombers won't destroy cities. Are you thinking bombers destroying their cultural buildings will be enough?

Just my sloppiness. I'm so used to drafting rifles that I did not think about getting any more...

30 conscript infantry of course would be quite a threat to any unfortified landing force... :shifty:

Nevertheless I'd love to see FREE's cities shrink a bit...

Yes. We won't be able to stop their inexorable slog to a 100K victory that way, but we can slow it down a lot, wiping out those doubled culture buildings.

Probably will need to invade at some point, too, of course.

One thing occured to me, as I was looking at unit costs and how we have things set up - I'm not sure that losing Hoover's is such a big deal. Why? You still have to build the factory to get the effect of hoover's - and with the way that shields are set up, there aren't a lot of units that get built faster with factory/plant than just factory. Take our best shield city, the treasury. We can get it up to 40 shields, 80 with coal plant/factory. that's 2 turns for infantry/tank/bomber - anything above cavalry, with or without the coal plant.

I think we should still paint FREE as the runaway civ - but I think they are perhaps less scary than we make them out to be.

Our bomber practice shows that we will be able to bomb the island with The Bangles. This is the island NW of SABERland. Are we going to help SABER reclaim that island from BABE?

They should certainly be able to take it back themselves but we could offer our assistance once we took SCI back successfully and signed peace with BABE or made sure we won't get struck again...
