Great engineer fails to grant new technology

This seems to be small potatoes to many of the issues experienced here, however I have one nagging issue (besides game crashing in the 1900’s due to ATI graphic drivers)

When using a Great Engineer, one as the option to discover a new technology. Every time I try to do that I never get the new technology. What is up? Anyone have any ideas.

Great people only contribute a certain number of science points towards researching a technology. In the early and middle stages of the game this number is large enough that they will usually discover the tech outright. In the later stages though they merely reduce the time it takes to research a tech, since they've contributed a portion of the beakers. It sounds like in this case the engineer has contributed to the research, but not enough to give you the tech outright. You'll still need to finish the research off normally to get it.
