So normally, when you choose a tech to research, it will show in the top left of the screen. But when you choose a tech further up the tree (meaning it will first research the prerequisite techs), that icon will not show in the top left. So you don't know how long it's gonna take, you can't change your mind and choose another tech etc. Once you picked a tech furter up the queue, you're basically stuck with it and can't even track the progress.

Great job on QA, Firaxis! Just great to release a new feature without even checking whether it works correctly! FFS...

For real you can't change it? I was hoping to use it just to see what exactly leads to what. I don't have it memorized despite all my games. If that's true that's absolutely stupid.

Has it ever worked in the way you describe? I'm pretty sure the tech icon has only ever shown what you are currently researching, not the end goal. I agree that the tech tree should tell you how long each later tech should take as well, though.

Civ VI, new game (Kongo), I've chosen Masonry:

Civ VII, new game (Amina), I've also chosen Masonry:

Animal Husbandry is shown on the tracker:

Seems to be working exactly as VI did. VI shows the turns later techs will take (and the Science cost, if you hover), whereas VII doesn't, but as nice as that would be to have, it has nothing to do with research queuing specifically.

I can also change to a new queued research (Currency) and you can see it preserves my 1 turn of progress in Animal Husbandry:

I can confirm that Masteries don't seem to be selectable though.

The icon in the top left is showing you the first tech you need to study in order to reach the one you've clicked. I think this is correct and intended behavior. The "bad" thing about the function they've introduced is that nothing tell you the expected turn required to reach the destination tech in the tech tree (in previous Civs at least in the tech tree you could see the expected number of turns for each one).

edit: also, at least for me, you can change the tech to study at anytime, it doesn't seem bugged

I guess you a mod in order to see on top right the number of turns required for successive techs? I've not that number, I can see only the one in the tech I can immediatly study:
That's not the number of turns; that's just the order (1, 2, 3, etc). Should appear once you've selected the destination tech you want to reach.

I had read sixty4half's post to mean that even if a mastery was available to research currently, you couldn't switch to it once you've selected a tech/civic further down the tree.
I'll check this in the current game I'm playing.

Okay. I went back and did a second test. It turns out you can't switch away to an available mastery if you're looking at the full-screen civics/tech tree, but you can make that switch from the smaller panel that opens up on the left side of the screen when you first click the civics or technologies button. Very random.

About 20 turns ago, I had chosen Entertainment two spots up the civics tree, and I'm studying it now. I can switch to Citizenship on the full-page panel, but I can't switch to the available mastery for Code of Laws. However, I can switch to that mastery from the smaller menu. On the other hand, I'm studying Navigation in the tech tree, which was immediately available when I selected it. On the full-screen panel, I can switch from that to the mastery for Currency or Bronze Working if I want to.

So, this is clearly a weird little bug, but it looks like you can get around it if you select the mastery on the small panel rather than the full-screen page.

Now, who's gonna report this bug?

"Not it!"

Still I can't see it, is it a mod or something else? (see my previous screenshot)

Nope, you can't switch away to an available mastery! This has got to be a glitch. About 20 turns ago, I had chosen Entertainment two spots up the civics tree, and I'm studying it now. On the other hand, I'm studying Navigation in the tech tree, which was immediately available when I selected it. I can switch from that to the mastery for Currency or Bronze Working if I want to. This is almost certainly a bug. It makes no sense not to be able to switch away to a mastery if you need it immediately, just because you're on a multiple-tech or multiple-civic path.

So who's gonna report it?

Ok....this is definitely sad...they fix one thing they break two :crazyeye:

I'm not using any mods. Steam (PC).

In your screenshot, you don't appear to have selected a destination tech. It looks like you're hovering over Volo (Flight?).
Yes but even after clicking there nothing changes in the UI. In the screenshot I have already clicked there

If you're not using any mods, then this sounds like a bug. Whether it's new game vs. in-progress game (mine was tested in a new game), or platform-specific build differences, I don't know.

I updated my post after further testing. It looks like you can switch over to an available mastery from the small panel on the left side of the screen, but not the full-page screen for techs/civics. What a weird bug.

Update:
Since other people reported that they can see the 'currently researching' icon in the top left, even though they selected a tech further up the tree, I just tried again.
It works for me too now, but I've progressed my current game and have researched a couple of techs by now, so at this point it works.

But I just loaded up my first saved game, which I made at turn 1, and tried again. As soon as I could research my first tech, I selected Bronze Working, which is further up in the tech tree. This is the result:

As you can see, the 'currently researching' icon in the top left is missing. There is no way for me to access the tech tree and change the tech I'm researching now, that icon is the only way to do that and the icon is just gone. So now I just have to wait until masonry and all of its prerequisite techs have been researched.

FYI you can select a mastery down the tree, eg hegomony 2, and it will queue the line to there same as just queuing the parent

The usual, do you have any mods? I didn't experience anything like it.

Is the problem discussed here maybe the issue reported when using the policy preview mod?

The post below the linked one contains a way to manually fix.
