Whenever I play a cultural game, or generally as Russia - I always end up with great musicians whose great works I have no slots for, so they just mill around or sleep in my cities. It seems much harder to house these as compared to great writers (2 slots for amphi) or artists (3 slots for art museums). Broadcast centre comes fairly late on and only gives 1 music slot anyway - so you have to build many more per musician than for other GP. It feels like this needs tweaking or am I missing something?
This is a problem that is most acute for Russia, since Lavras give early Great Musician points and Lavra spam is so appealing. Having an alternative use for cultural Great Persons is a common request, but there's no telling when (or whether) Firaxis will ever do that.
In the meantime, since Great Persons are invulnerable, one common use for "spare" Great Persons is to use them as scouts and send them on a tour of the world. If a Great Musician is somewhere across the map when you unlock Broadcast Centers or a wonder that has a music slot, you can just feed the Great Musician to some nearby barbs -- the GM will teleport to your nearest city and you can then move them to the city with the open music slot.
It's mostly a Russia problem, since they get an abundance of Great Musician points before everyone else. On the bright side, Great Persons can't be killed, so go ahead and use your musician as a forward scout.
Rapid Fire responses! Yes - its most noticeable as Russia but as I often play Divine Spark as my pantheon it seems to happen whenever I play for CV. I'd not thought of using them as a scout - I shall try that. It wouldn't be quite as bad if Broadcast Centres had 2/3 slots - I can't quite understand the logic of having just 1!
I see it all over actually, well anytime I go culture route. I don't see us getting a "fix" for it until the 2nd xpac. The rest of the culture game is so fleshed out already I don't see them revisiting how any of those features work until much much later. In the mean time hopefully during the course of DLC we get some new wonders that will alleviate the issue somewhat.
Didn't know that GP were invulnerable--I never tested "suiciding" them into barbarians for free teleport, since I know barbarians *do* kill unguarded religious units instantly. Cool to know. I will start using GP as scouts from now on. I think the lack of slots is a huge problem in Civ VI. I never felt like I had slot issues in V. In VI, the typical building gives 1-2 slots for works, which is insufficient for Russia or Kongo Great Artists.

If I get stuck with the early engineer who gives free walls to cities, I'll often use him to go exploring. And there is the one spot in your capital which can be used for anything, if I happened to get an early musician. But yeah, otherwise they need more early uses - seems like the amphitheatre spots should be able to be used for either a writer or a musician, with a theming bonus to potentially be applied to them.
The Apadana wonder (from the Persia/Macedon DLC) has two slots for anything. If you don't mind shuffling Great Works, you can stash Music in them. There's also a Great Merchant who grants a bank with two slots. Neither of which are guarenteed, however. Great Library and Oxford both offer slots for Books, so building them can free up room for the GW shuffle.
Kongo works too, since they get a 5-Slot Palace.
Concerning the Engineer who gives walls, I use him for the free walls x2. Handy for Monarchy runs at least.
Isn't it strange that music isn't allowed to be stored in the Temple slot? I think I'm going to mod that. Some of the most famous music throughout human history was connected to places of worship.

I have the problem more acutely with great artists because I never use them.
I will use a few for a while and to keep barbs from lonely places but after a few AI just kill them, it's not like they are cute fluffy animals after all

I find this as well as I build only archaeological museums, though i tend to use some by trading my worthless artists for great works of writing. The AI seem to think its a fair trade...
I was thinking about this a lot today @spfun .... if we get loads of artists fast at the start we can fill art museums a lot faster than archaeological..... hmmmm less but faster tourism may be an option?
I'm looking for help with reorganizing Great Works among the available slots. Currently, I have a relic in my capital and two great works of writing in an amphitheater (they've been there much longer than 10 turns). I just built the Apadana and I have another Great Writer that I haven't activated yet. I would activate the Great Writer and put the Great Works of Writing into the Apadana until my next amphitheater is ready, and then move the writing over there to open up the Apadana for the Great Works of Music on their way. But I can't currently move anything using my Great Works interface screen. The "Organize" bar is visible at the top of the screen, but clicking it, or any any of the works, doesn't do anything. So I'm afraid to put the writing into the Apadana in case I can't reorganize later.
Do I not understand how to re-organize the Great Works with the user interface, or is it impossible to re-organize from the state I am in right now? I see that some museums must be filled before reorganization can happen. Do I need to fill the Apadana slots before it will let me move works around?
ETA: It was my not understanding the user interface. I was evidently just clicking on the building, when I click on the works directly, it lets me move them around.
An extra building for the Theatre District would be nice, as would the "tour" ability that Great Musicians had back in Civ5 BNW. Indeed, whilst on the subject, it'd be great if you could use certain Great Writers to gain an Inspiration for a Civic, the way some Great Scientists grant a Eureka.
If they do end up coming out with some sort of luxury-focused corporation mechanic in the expansion, I'm voting for GWAM to get an alternate use of 'Create Advertising Campaign'. Just so I can be amused with phrases like "Leo Tolstoy has created an advertising campaign for Toys" and "Raphael has create an advertising campaign for Perfume."
I think the issue with the great musicians, could be easily solved if they added an extra building option for the cultural district. Right now, you can essentially build an archeology museum for artifacts or an art museum for great works of art. That could be expanded, by adding a concert hall or opera house as a 3rd choice in place of the archeology museum or art museum. Opera or Concert houses used to be common culture buildings associated with every major city, so it would make sense to have a cultural building in Civ VI, that's dedicated to music.
Additionally, they should expand the number of great musicians a little, by adding Finnish composer Jean Sibelius as a musician. Sibelius is one of the greatest Classical Composers, so it would make sense for him to be represented in the game. While they are at it, they could also add the French composers Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Hector Berlioz.

There is already the Broadcast Center, which has one Great Work of Music slot. Giving it a second music slot would, I think, address much of the concern about wasted GMus. Having it appear earlier would also be helpful (even if it had to be renamed to something like concert hall to make sense in the civics tree).
Musicans are quite good for their toruism if you use satellite broadcast policy. With the chop trick, 3 forest = a district you should have pretty much an theatre square in every city if you plan to go culture which will skyrocket your great people points. Buildings can then be purchased, it is better to spend your gold on building purchase than great people purchases. That way you should have enough slots for all types of arts.
Great musicans come late so you should be near the radio stations when you are able to get them and there is really no loss if you get a few before you get radio stations. There are not that many great musicans so if you get 10 theatre squares you can store music from 5 musicians. And 10 theatre squares are not really that much if you use the chop trick.
Obviously you should have good science even if you plan to go culture. I think faith, scicence and culture districts are the 3 most important once if you plan for a culture victory because all these 3 have strong ties to your tourism output. Having hubs or docks are nice for the extra gold for building purchases.

In my personal modding where I added 5 new sets of beliefs (20 total) so that 12 religions can be played, one of the religious buildings is a Basilica which holds a great work of music. That makes an easy solution for Russia, who usually gets an early religion and could then choose this building. Plus, it makes sense for early great musicians, since they were on many occasions connected to religion.
