What's the difference between a politician and a statesman? What do you think makes a great statesman? Who in American history do you think counts as a great statesman and why? It does not have to be a president. Do you feel that America today has any great statesman? If yes, who is that person and why?

A statesman is one who is in touch with the people, and a politician is one who is in touch with the polls. A bad human would be a liar, but a bad poll would be a tragedy.

Lengthy discussion on what constitutes a statesman in this thread, if you don't mind digging through a lot of other junk to get at it:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
A statesman is usually a politician, diplomat or other notable public figure who has had a long and respected career at the national or international level.

Meaning from this definition:

Basicly a politician can be a statsman but a statsman do not need to be a politician.
