Great Wonders Elimination Thread

upvote: Golden Gate Bridge[2]1+1=2 The bridge connects 2 land masses sometimes. The units could simply embark but they would lose a turn. A good way to transport units to other land masses that are a few tiles away from each other.
downvote:Amundsen-Scott Research Station[3]6-3=3 I haven't seen this wonder built by myself nor anyone else while in single player. Too late to have around with the future technologies already in sight.

Eiffel Tower [16] (15+1) In an appeal-centric game (national parks, seaside resorts, earth goddess pantheon, BM Teddy, Australia, or even to maximize gold gains from public transport runs), getting +2 Appeal to each tile in your empire is well worth the opportunity cost to build it. Usually a safe bet, even on deity.

Meenakshi Temple [6] (9-3) Gurus? Even in my RV games I hardly use Gurus. If this was for inquisitors I’d get it in a heartbeat. But oh wait! The AI guns for it probably faster than even Stonehenge?! (Not that they actually use it and make/use gurus...) So another minus for sheer lack of availability.

Love this wonder. The AI doesn't seem to race for it so I almost always get it. Getting 2 free apostles at that time of the game this comes out is awesome. I often use one of them to add a belief to my religion (depends what promotions ofc) +4 faith is nice. The +2 diplomatic victory points are w/e unless you're going for diplo victory.

Meenakshi Temple 3 = 6-3
You just don't need that many gurus. A couple free gurus and cheaper gurus is pretty meh. Worst part is the AI absolutely loves this wonder so you're almost never going to get it.

I love the Apandana. I will never get it on Deity but on lesser difficulties and without greater focus, it sure is fun to wonderspam in a capital with Apandana.

Jebel is pretty bad. Iron? I'm not city planning to make sure I maximize a 4 faith AoE.

Hanging gardens (10-3) 15% growth isn't much for small cities- In a 5 pop city with every citizen working a 3 food tile, there's a surplus of 3*5+2-2*5=7 food. So the +15% growth is just +1 food. For big cities, growth isn't important because there's not much point in growing above 10 pop.
Temple of Artemis (18+1) This wonder is what the hanging gardens aspire to be. +3 food, +4 housing giving you a big advantage right out of the bat, and it gives you the amenities to support the extra pop.

Pyramids [22] (21 + 1): Best wonder in the game, not even gonna bother arguing against this. I'll just go ahead and start its coronation.

Meenakshi Temple [ELIMINATED] (3 -3): This to me feels like an unnecessary "win more" Wonder, that requires you to jump through a lot of hoops to get sort of minor theological combat bonuses that you don't need. Comparing this to Amundsen, at least with Amundsen maybe it can be helpful for those Science race projects. This Wonder buffs a unit that you don't really use, for a minor bonus, at the point when you don't need the bonus. I'll concede that I easily could be overly harsh to this wonder, but I don't really like it.

Casa de Contratación [15-3=12] The AI prioritizes this pretty highly and I never see a reason to fight them for it. By the Renaissance era, new governor titles just aren't that important. There are so many hoops to get the bonus 15% production, gold, and faith. This cities have to be on a non-home continents with a governor.
Cristo Redentor [15+1=16] Cristo is a great wonder for cultural victories, doubling seaside resort and relic tourism to civs that have discovered the Enlightenment.

I voted 22 hours ago but I prefer this time to be my normal voting time.

Let's focus on letter "O" today.

Országház [13] (16-3) The only thing good about this is that it's the cheapest industrial era wonder (920 productions), so if you want to unlock eureka for Flight... other than that it only gives you 4 culture and a few diplomatic favor. We are strictly voting for games against AI, so diplomatic favor are not of much use other than trading for gold. Usually you get enough of those to sell to AI (unless everyone hate you). This is strictly worse than Jebel Barkal which at least give you 20-ish faith.

Oracle [18] (17+1) Do I really need to explain this? With Pingala's x2 GPP promotion it gives you so many of the early Great Persons as long as you have a district of that. Your Oracle-Pingala city can contribute to half of your science and culture in the early game.

Casa de Contratación [+1]

Among the situational and map-dependent wonders - which are meant to be eliminated earlier than Pyramids or Oracle - Casa de Contratación is the least situational one. It awards the player for expanding to another continent, and playing wide is the most common playstyle. Settling heavily on foreign continents often happens naturally when going wide, and spawn near a continental divide is also not that uncommon - It's not hard to meet the criteria of Casa when settling wide.

And for the actual bonuses, +15% production/gold/faith is a good boost, and if combining with other percentage boosts such Colonial Taxes (+25%/+10%) and Kilwa (+15%) it can create some super powerful colonial cities. It also provides 3 governor promotions - the usual numbers of governor titles one can possibly get around Renaissance is 10, so that's at least 1/3 of titles one already have - helpful for quickly build up a governors promotion, unless Secret Societies kicks in. Also +3 Great Merchant points, icing on the cake.
(Also, speaking of icing on the cake, the Casa is probably the most historically accurate wonder in terms of bonuses.)

In terms of AI's competitiveness of the Casa - since AI usually build their Gov Plaza in their 6th or 7th settled crappy city, and Casa is tied to Gov Plaza, it is not hard for the player finishing the Casa early. If let AI build it, they often finish it one or two eras late, left the player plenty of time. The Casa is not an easy build like Mausoleum, but it can be easier to get than Kilwa or Big Ben (AI will sometimes beeline Kilwa). In general, Casa is one of the most helpful situational wonders, and I think it deserves stay a bit longer on the list.

Huey Teocalli [-3]

The "Lake Petra". But among the situational and map-dependent wonders, unlike Casa, Huey is probably the least helpful one. I mean it is not a bad wonder, the bonuses are good - Empire wide bonuses! - but the map generation tend to not give you a lot of lakes to benefit from Huey.

And for amenities, a lot of player will probably go for Colosseum - mush easier to get and more direct bonuses.

Great Bath [9] (12-3). A niche wonder that only is useful on apocalypse mode. The problem with this wonder is that you need to invest very early hammers for a wonder that only starts generating a decent amount of faith in the middle to late game. Even if you have 10 flood plains, which is rare, if you’re really lucky, you’re going to get at most 20 faith early.

Mausoleum at Halicarnassus [19] (18+1) I build this every game, plug in Liang with fisheries and then have ~12 awesome workable tiles and a very nice bonus with the extra GE charges. Plus, while it’s not as powerful as Kilwa, Pyramids or some of the wonders, the AI never builds this wonder. I can recall only one game where I was beaten to this on deity. If you put even a tiny amount of effort in, you’re going to get Mausoleum.

Jebel Barkal [10] 9 +1 Not in my top 10, but I'm shocked it's this low this early, there's still a number I think should go before this. It's not that hard to get a significant faith (20+ per turn) benefit from it's AoE effect (+4 faith from each city with in 6 tiles) pretty early in the game. That can do a lot in a faith economy.

Sydney Opera House [6] 9-3 Both the Hermitage and this are overpriced GW storage facilities with no secondary effects. But at least with the Hermitage, I'm likely to have great artists I have no slots for (especially if I'm building arch museums). I'm not sure I've ever filled all my broadcast studio slots before winning the game. Maybe as Russia? And if I want more Great Musicians, running the theater square project seems like a better use of production than building this. In desperate need of a secondary effect. +25% tourism in all cities with harbors. +50% tourism in all cities on the same coast. All harbor adjacency also give culture. Etc.

Choosing between Huey Teocalli and Sydney Opera, I choose the second. Huey at least have fun name and is useful for literally one civ (Netherlands). Sydney is useless for all civs, because of huge cost, hard placement (those tiles around harbors are resources or have other wonder or water park to increase adjecency) and bonus not useful at the moment it comes. I can imagine building it with 3 charges of great engineer, but at that time I would ALWAYS use that charges for very powerful Amundssen (thoughI believe A-SRS is very powerful and sometimes gamechanging, I understand quick decline of Amundssen as great engineer is the only way to build this wonder).
Sydney -3

If I am going for diplo victory, it is my must have.
If I am going for anything else excluding domination, it is my must have.
At the time I unlock sanitation, I have minimum 5 allied city states. Ususally more. This is 5 added diplofavors. Diplo oriented civs pay 3 per turn for 5 favors. This means trade deal equal 90 (3x30turns) gold every turn, usually more. And when you finally bankrupt Sweden, you move to oter diplo oriented civ. +90 gold per turn wonder? Yes please
Fantastic wonder to strongly build up gold income, bankrupt rivals and fairly easy to build

Pretty ridiculous how GBB was gone before Syndney Opera House.

Amundsen-Scott Research Station [4] (3+1) this guy would be gone soon so an upvote to keep him afloat.

Obviously, it's very difficult to hard build him, and you have to settle a city in tundra near snow to build him. Even if you don't have the 40% science bonus from snow tiles, 20% is still good enough. But what is the case for building Amdundsen Scott Research Station? The answer: you are going to settle a city in the tundra anyways to buy spaceport and chop Space projects, so why not plan for a campus too and also Admundsen Scott?

Ruhr Valley [17] (16+1) Production is king! This wonder isn't too hard to get or place and it can turn your primary industrial city into a powerhouse. I try for this one in every game I play, especially science.

Hanging Gardens [4] (7-3) Interestingly enough, between this, Stonehenge, and the Great Bath, I would choose the other two over this in almost every game (unless you're China you probably will only get one of these). The effects are just negligible; +2 housing is nice but that's a lot of production for a "granary", and the 15% growth is hardly noticeable for me.

Weh :( was going to try giving a bit of life to the Panama Canal before it was gone lol. I agree that Canal placement requirements are too strict, but sometimes when the continents span north to south, and one gets enough cities and canals working together to bridge the water masses... it really feels magical to have navy that can move to all water masses and meaningfully participate.

Kotoku-in [7] (10-3) 4 free Warrior Monks isn't particularly exciting, unless one somehow picked up the Warrior Monk follower belief (over the other follower beliefs??). The +20% Faith is more applicable, but if one wants Medieval Era wonders that work well with religion, surely Mont St. Michel or Hagia Sophia seem like better choices. Furthermore, Grand Master's Chapel lets one spend Faith on regular military land units, which seems like the better option if one wants to turn Faith into units.

Venetian Arsenal [16] (15+1) Getting a free naval unit is quite awesome (when it matters). Not only does VA save on the production time for building another naval unit, but the free naval unit doesn't cost strategics either, which is quite useful for Frigates. The AI doesn't build VA that often (in my experience), so one doesn't have to fight for it too hard.

Statue of Liberty [17] (16+1) Hey, Lady Liberty has come a long way. Once she was arguably the worst wonder in the game, but now she has relevance. Of course, it really only matters if you're going Diplo Victory, but when you do, it's a must-build. 4 Points just for building it is amazing. So yes, it's limited in scope, and you can ignore it most of the time, but when you need it, you need it.
Taj Mahal [6] (9-3) I've never built this once in all my hours. I don't think I'm missing much because it really does seem irrelevant. It doesn't even apply to all events, only +2 on up. Spending all that production for just a few era score points here and there doesn't sound too tempting.
