Great Wonders Elimination Thread

Great Library: even after the buff it received, it’s still an underwhelming wonder. You’d think it should serve a science victory; yet if you’re prioritising science, you’ll have all the classical eurekas already *and* you’ll be monopolising they great scientists - so it’s almost redundant. This means it’s actually better for a culture victory, esp. with the great writer slots, but if you’re doing culture route will you have the eureka for Recorded History? And will you not want to prioritise other wonders - eg. Oracle or Apadana? I dunno, Great Library just doesn’t know what it wants to be and, therefore, ends up being a load of ehhhh. I’d also add that the AI does like prioritising it, in my experience.....

Kilwa Kisiwani: on the other hand, Kilwa knows exactly what it is - a very powerful way to convert envoys into raw yields. From my experience, the AI *will* build it if you’re not careful, since they love to rush Machinery. But equally, you probably want to rush Machinery as well in order to get crossbows - so if you start building it as soon as you research the tech, you normally get it fine.

The Colosseum allows a player to be swimming in culture at a point when most players are working hard just to get theatre square adjacencies. Insane to see it getting downvotes right now.

Casa de Contratación is very situational and even then there are bigger boosts you can get for your production.

Colosseum [15] (14+1) Surprised to see this getting voted down so early. The extra culture can be huge early and extra amenities are always nice. The obvious downside is that you have to build an entertainment district, but this isn't that huge of a downside because you're likely building this in an expand and because Colosseum is AOE, your entertainment district will be well positioned with its zoo if you need extra amenities then.

Országház [6] (9-3) I build this wonder way more often than I should because the AI never seems to build it, but what does it really do for me? An approximate five extra diplomatic favor at this stage of the game really doesn't matter even if you're selling DF to the AI or going for a diplomatic victory. With alliances, city-state allies and pagodas, it's not hard to be accumulating tons of DF per turn in the middle to late game. If you're going for a diplomatic victory, you win these by timing statute of liberty, winning aid requests and guessing right on WC congress votes. Raw DF doesn't do much for you because the AI will either invest all of their DF into random votes rendering your massive DF meaningless due to the increased cost of each vote (i.e. ban luxuries or lose 2 DV points) or they will invest one DF per AI for a vote meaning that you don't have to invest much to win the vote anyway (i.e. culture bomb vote).

+1) Great Zimbabwe (1 >> 2). We have had several resurrections already, so just try this one too. It is situational and difficult to find a good spot to build, but when available, it is pretty decent. Cattle uses to come in clusters, so if you are able to build Great Zimbabwe, you'll probably have granted a pair of bonus resources around only from cows, and then it's probably grassland and more crop resources around, this is, if you did not go earlier in chop-chop mode. (guess this may be a reason Great Zimbabwe does not look that useful for cetain playstyles).

-3) Chichen Itza (7 >> 4). It seems Chichen went unnoticed for the last two pages (at least for me, as it would have downvoted it in my last post if I had noticed). While terrain boosting wonders are in general good, Chichen boost is maybe the lower one, and applies to tiles you may inadvertently remove for many different reasons. Unless you found a city with a really big banana plantation area, probably the final benefit of the wonder results underwelming.

Sorry, no revival for Great Zimbabwe. For it to be anything other than mediocre, you need a lot of bonus resources; at least 4 or so. But... if you have a lot of bonus resources, you're usually better placed harvesting them to massively accelerate that City, drawing more benefit than Great Zimbabwe does. Even if you don't harvest and commit to Great Zimbabwe, you then have to forego powerful ITRs for DTRs, except... we're not in the early game by the time we are building Great Zimbabwe and DTRs just aren't that strong any more. I don't think this Wonder is bad, per se - I think we've eliminated all the absolute stinkers. But it certainly isn't great and there's better uses of both production and those bonus resources.

Meanwhile, the Cristo Redentor is basically borderline compulsory for Cultural Victory, particularly if you built one around Reliquaries.

Oracle [21] (20+1) - Oracle shouldn't be five points behind Temple of Artemis. I love both wonders, and would be fine with both finishing top 5, so I won't downvote ToA (yet). The oracle provides a 25% reduction in the faith cost of patronizing great people. It's worth pointing out that, since this is a percentage, it's going to be useful for the entire game. Alfred Nobel (great person) provides 20 great person points towards recruitment, but obviously that's not much help for the later era great people. A percentage though? Very good. Any buff towards patronage gives you much more flexibility in terms of getting a specific person, if there is someone you need to make your strategy work. Also, if you're on the cusp of getting a golden age, patronage can put you over the threshold.
Even if you're not focusing on the accumulation of faith, plus 2 gpp per district in the city is no joke either. It's no accident Bologna won the city state elimination thread.
ToA gives you a jump start on growth with housing and amenities. However, amenities do not win games. All they really do is increase the rate at which cities grow. It's true you do suffer a 5% yield penalty with negative amenities, but especially early on, your capital is unlikely to be negative.

University of Sankore [0] (3-3) - This has some fickle placement requirements - needs to be in a desert and next to a university. It's not a rare situation, but I also wouldn't say it's super common. Although there are desert mountains, I don't think there are many reef or geothermal fissure adjacent desert tiles, so it might be hard to find a good campus spot in the desert. Also, the benefits of the wonder are not amazing, and, worst of all, it also benefits the other civilizations. Even the oracle, which I upvoted above, provides the same amount of points towards great scientists as this one, while doing so much more, coming so much earlier, and costing so much less. Sure, it's nice to have, but at this stage nice-to-haves are dropping off the list.

Amundsen-Scott Research Station [4] (7 - 3): I'm glad that we didn't eliminate this wonder right off the bat, but I fear that we've overcorrected and now it's overstaying its welcome. I won't deny that this wonder that be surprisingly helpful for the late game science victory race, but the circumstances where you can both find a place for it and build it in a timely enough fashion where it'll be helpful to you are rare.

Országház [4] (3 + 1): Throwing a pity vote in for Országház, because I really don't think this wonder's bad at all. 100% diplo favor is really good if you've been able to control city-states, and makes for an easy diplomatic victory pursuit. I'll concede that it's not as much of a no-brainer build as Statue of Liberty, but something else to consider is that it's really easy to build. Compared to a lot of other Industrial Era wonders, it's got a really low production cost (75% the cost of Statue of Liberty, for a one-to-one comparison). Additionally, the AI doesn't compete for it very often, and they don't tend to rush Sanitation; whereas you, the player, will often pass through the tech on your way to Chemistry. I find this wonder to be fairly reliable, and while I won't go out of my way to build it, I often will end up finding a place for it in my diplo-focused games, where it ends up being a pretty decent help.

Ruhr Valley 16 = 1 + 15. Surprised this one isn't getting many up-votes. A universally useful wonder, but especially useful for Science victory. Let's face. Science gets you to the space race but production gets you to space. It can be a race to get it before the AI though.

Chichen Itza [1] = 4 - 3. Unless I'm playing Brazil, which I don't, then I mercilessly chop rain forests. Unlike it's sibling wonders St Basil's and Petra that also boost terrain, not only do I find that it there are typically less tiles with rain forests on them in city range than desert or tundra, but also that since rain forests are a removable feature its less useful.

I'm a bit sad for Great Zimbabwe, we seem to omit the fact that it's a very powerful remedy to spy problems - among them the recruit partisans mission.
It's time to target the wonders who serve only one victory condition, versatility is essential at this stage.

Alhambra [4] More than a thousand hours in the game, never build this thing, or maybe once but it is barely memorable. A military card is a minor convenience more than anything, even if you go for a domination victory, you don't feel you need it, especially when your choice of government will most likely give you enough military slots. If you don't go for a Domination Victory and you build this, you have issues identifying your priorities. Never seen this wonder actually good for anything or any victory condition.

Downvote: Bolshoi Theatre (15 - 3 = 12) really only relevant for CV, and even then it's only a few more slots and GPPs. The Civics is a nice idea but you need to time it well to get useful ones, otherwise I find it tends to give dead-end ones.

A bit earlier today but will back to normal voting time tomorrow.

Just one word on Amundsen-Scott Research Station (not voting it up) - you don't have to build it for SV. Whether it's useful for you actually depend on how much you value culture. If you have a very good culture then it's not that hard to reach. And you can chop it.

Also a word for Bolshoi regarding @EmJayLambert's comment - it's less relevant for CV but more important for SV. In culture victory games your production is usually low and culture is high, so that wonder doesn't gain you much (maybe get you 5 turns worth of culture, but taking you 15 turns to build). But in SV games it's different, you are desperate for some late game cultures, and Bolshoi may get you 15 turn worth of culture and you can build it in less than 10 turns. It's in a leaf note of the civic tree which means AI usually don't go for it. And that means you can almost take advantage of this whenever you want.

Oracle [22] (21 + 1) This one actually have a lot of hidden value - not just getting you early Great Persons but also speed up later ones (which is valuable but hard to measure). And for those of you who think beelining the Pingala x2 GPP promotion has a cost: honestly the best way to do it in SV games is culture first, x2 next, science last (early game science is not that important, but early game culture is). Many people turned this around and wonder why others have a more efficient early game. Getting the science promotion first is really bad (at that point population is low anyway, but 4.6 culture is like getting you more than 2 monuments).

Temple of Artemis [18] (21 - 3) This one is a little bit overrated. It give your capital a good population and many amenity, but that's about it. If it were Civ V it will be a god-tier wonder, but in VI population just not that good, forcing you to settle wide. Thus Temple of Artemis is fun to build, nice to have, but not game-changing (any wonder above [20] should be at least game-changing in some aspect).
