grs1 - the roman legions

Thanks, grs.

Got it.

0-950
Cancel the alliance with the Greeks against the Arabs as Abu is down to one town in the very far northeast. Bring him in against the French for Furs and Dyes
The Ottomans are down to one town so I can bring him in against the French and collect his whole treasuty (14g) in one turn when the alliance with Egypt expires.
Move a lot of workers and try to find all our forces.
March legions against the Arab city in the north tip of the continent. Kill a French spear and capture two slaves at Toulouse.

Lose two legions to French MDI's outside Rheims.

1-960
Capture Toulouse, no casualties. Kill French Musketeer on plains ouside Rheims.
Kill French MDI and seize iron mountain outside Toulouse.
Lose Elite legion crippling French musketeer at Besancon. Kill a pike with next legion. Elite Legion attacks crippled muskeeter and Bede's Legions are formed. City is burned. Germanicus hotfoots it to Toulouse to form an Army
Cancel alliance with Cleo against Ottomans and in the process cancel all lux deals. Renew furs only for same total as furs and ivory and pull another 16gpt for ivory and 16gpt for dyes.
Get a peace treaty with Ottomans and sign him up against the French for his treasury 21g+5gpt.
Rush some settlers out of various places in the homeland to settle the northlands.

Capture Santander in the Spanish Isles, sink a galley, keep the city as a forward base for operations aginst Spain.

The Ottomans come calling and want an alliance against the Egyptians and a Right of Passage. Not right now Osman, wouldn't be prudent at this juncture.

Now the Greeks want something...maps. Nope, not unless you can pay for them and you have no money.

2-970
Burn Muscat and the Arabs are destroyed.

Lose three legions in a fruitless attack at Chartres.

Begin the march on Paris

Start redirecting the workforce into the jungles in the north.

3-980
Advancing on Paris

4-990
Assault Paris with three legions and the city falls. Burn it.
Greeks take Cherbourg out from under the swords of our legions.

5-1000
Positioning for the attack on Chartres and a landing at Amiens, north of Cherbourg.
The Spanish attack is going poorly. Their swords keep beating us off the main island. Pulling back to Santander to regroup and rethink. Their towns are close enough together that any landing is immediately overwhelmed by swordsmen and archers.

6-1010
Marching on Chartres and the French iron at Lyons.

7-1020
Lose two legions in the assault on Amiens. Burn the city Legions. load onto caravels for trip up coast to Dijon.

Moving into position at Chartres and Lyons.

8-1030
Kill a French MDI and invest Lyons and Chartres.

9-1040
Burn Lyons. That is the last French iron source and we took their saltpeter away a long time ago.
Assault Chartres and cripple the garrison but fail to take the city. Army arrives at the gates of Chartres.
Defeat Spanish landing force at Santander and sink galley
Land legions on Spain's main island and absorb counter attacks with no losses.

10-1050
Take Toledo on Spanish main. Advance on Barcelona killing an archer and spear on the way.
Attack Chartres, kill pike with army and another pike with legion. Regular spear showing in garrison. Start Heroic Epic at Rome.

The French are not much longer for this world. I would take Chartres and keep it, sack Dijon on the peninsula, then wait for somebody else to finish them off while we heal up and prepare for the Egyptians. There is a huge force of legions at Anjar just waiting for a crack at the Egyptians. Let them send a couple of workers acorss our borders then demand their removal, then just wim the legions aim them south down the coast with following caravels to protect the wounded and crippled, burning, pillaging and sacking as you go. Once France is gone you can take Turkey anytime and then heal up for the Greeks after the Egyptians.

There are many caravels sailing for Santander and Toledo with reinforcements against the Spanish.

There is a ton of jungle chopping left to do at home, though most of the land is claimed. The core towns need mountains mined to get up to full productivity, something I overlooked when I hustled the labor force north to clear rain forests.

Leo's is still building, not sure what to do about that one, unless the intention was to swap it out to NewtonU when Magnetism comes in or for denial purposes. We remain the tech leader and no tech trades were done.

Steam Power for rails would be nice and maybe Nationalism for Mobilization, but after that I wowuld shut off the science spigot, push money at the populace to keep them smiling and go smite our enemies.

I like the rails call. It will certainly speed troops to the front. Roman legions riding a train. Who'd a thunk it.
edit: Forgot to congratulate you on the army. For a military civ, leaders have been few and far between. Do we have the pentagon? Probably not because I can't think of any other armies. Need 3 I believe. A slew of leaders is due anytime now. Armies will help, though not as much as C3C.

I did half of the turns, the others will follow late tonite or tomorrow.

Ottos are out, French are down to one city which will fall in my turns. I got Cleo to declare and Alex to join us. Cleo had a salpeter source in Edrine for some rounds - I think I don't need to explain what that means - but I do it anyways :)

It hurts to need 10 legions to capture a lousy city.

I opened up a leader farm in Barcelona - we have 4 armies now, Cleo seems to lose the fight in the former French lands and we took 4 of her cities (incl. Edrine). Below is the minimap; sorry but my family gets the next turns now, stay tuned ;)

We should have well over 200 legions now so that's 5% against multiple defense 4. Keep building them swords!!! Resources first then cities, I think.

We need to keep on pumping out legions, if they get to riflemen we are in trouble.

PreTurn: I see no reason for Leo's either, Rome set to legion, Ravenna to military academy in one - wasting many shields, but we need more armies, not cheaper unit upgrades.

IBT: kill a french MDI, Greece and Egypt sign alliance vs Ottos - how brave of them, I let the ROP with Cleo expire, Egypt destroys the Ottomans

1060: take Chartress, we demand removal from cleo - sadly she complies

IBT: french archer diesm cleo demands contact with Spain - we decline - she does not declare, some fighting with Isabella, she has dozens of spears, we quell 2 resisters

1070: we get a leader at Dijon, capture it and form an army

IBT: resistance in captured cities end

1080: we take avignon, we force cleo to leave - she does not declare, we take Barcelona, we get another leader and form another army, we poke Cleo and Egypt declares on us, we give ivory to Alex to join, sci to 70% physics in 1, the 29 unit stack bede left me at Anjar moves, as do some smaller, recently formed ones

IBT: 5 minutes of hell break loose...we will have a very hard time in this game..MDI rule us..Alex and Cleo experience heavy casualties, we lose to 12 spanish spears, learning physics-magnetism next, we can build the pentagon now

1090: rome starts The Pentagon, it takes us 8 legions to get Edfu from Egypt. We will have to take Edrine next turn, it gives Cleo salpeter.

For the first time I realise what I did when I started this game.

1100: we use Barcelona to fish for elites and leader - 2 elites this round, we capture Edrine and with it Cleos salpeter, we raze Azyut and Mugla and heavy losses

IBT: nothing special

1110: we get a leader from the Barcelona farm and form another army, we raze Hiranconpolis

IBT: kill a longbow and 2 archer, lose 2 legions

1120: raze Byblos at heavy losses, rush walls in Anjar

IBT: lose 2 legions, kill 2 longbows, we learn magnetism, ToG next

1130: we take Tours and the French are out

IBT: Alexander wants dyes for rop renewal and we comply

1140: movement

IBT: Iznik riots

1150: we raze Teruel, we get a highly endangered leader near Thebes

I use Sirmium, Shanghai and Byzantium as shipping points - some ships and legions are still automated to and from these points. We have a leader directly in front of Thebes and we will have a hard time to get him home. Alexander is down Physics and Economics - he needs 3 techs to the industrial ages. If he gets Nationalism as free tech we have lost. - I thought some rifles will be possible, but they won't. Cleo is down Physics and Metallurgy, Isabella misses Literature, Monotheism, Feudalism and Engineering.

I don't think we will make it, maybe I just had bad luck or even trashed it. Good luck to next better player!

@bede: We have 186 legions now. I lost at least 50 in 10 turns.

Well, the leaders are now coming. 4 legion armies after the MilAcad completes will help a lot. Was there a chance to use those prebuilds for both the MilAcad and the Pentagon. Or were the turns not aligned. If we can get around 8 4-legion armies rolling on Egypt and then Alex we should be OK. They will be 6.6.1 armies I believe. (3*4)/4 = 3 bonus. We have lots of legions too. Once rails go up we should be able to produce 10-15 per turn. Be sure not to load 4 units in the Spanish armies so they can come over in galleons when the Spanish are destroyed.
Good luck. Keep the legions grouped in high quantities when attacking. Fingers crossed for more armies.

Doing well.

I expect that production will keep up with losses from here on out. Just keep the heat on...

Four unit armies can tear through territory like a hot knife through melted butter. Pillage first, then burn.

Bede said:
Pillage first, then burn.
Absolutely, from my AW experience, pillaging works wonders on crippling AI production. A ton of legion armies will be able to beat rifles, albeit slowly.

Work the ground from the outside in. Wipe out access to resources, luxuries and food, in that priority order. Before attacking a town destroy its access to the rest of its motherland. If it's on the coast, attack and hold. If it's inland burn it and scorch the earth that you haven't already.

If you can keep coming at them from multiple sides in good concentrations of force their ccounter attacks will dissipate.
