grs1 - the roman legions

Got it!

Play tonight.

It is now 1325 and Cleopatra has been exiled to her island (Elephantine burned at the cost of one army and seven regiments of legions) and there are about 200 legions or so hanging around the rubble. The galleons have just arrived at Barcelona to transport the forces to finish Santander. Alexander the Ignorant is still three technologies from the IA, and does not have MilTrad yet. Iron Works built in Canton and is producing nearly two legions equivalent of shields each and every turn. Rail net pretty complete in the core and to the east and is now proceeding up the spine of old America. It looks like a lot of Alexander's offensive forces are within reach of one or more of those two hundred legions.

There are nearly ten boatloads of legions landed at Urfa on the west coast of Greece, within reach of Athens and Argos.

I am going to post the 5 turns and save Wednesday early AM. approx. (noon GMT).

Barring a major tectonic event I don't think this game will last another 150 years.

0-1300
Very little to do other than admire our 292 magnificent legions and count the 7 eagles in the field.

Time to draw the noose around Elephantine and Santander.

Spend some time doing a little map reading to find Alex's resources.

Egyptian knight gallops out of Elephantine and kills a crippled legion.

Watch the fireworks displays as WLTKD is celebrated in the home continent.

Can't count the number of legions produced.

1-1305
Much movement of legions and workers

Egyptian knight kills another legion on the way back to Elephantine.

1310-1320
Requires much manuevering of legions to close the noose at Elephantine. Incldes blocking Greek knights, MDI's and LB's. The Greek forces in the south can now be mouse trapped when the time comes.

5-1325
Investment of Elephantine is complete.

Battle for Elephantine:
Bede's Eagles strike first and get their wings clipped by a musket. Four legions die wounding the defending musket. A fifth and a sixth legion die to wounding the next muskets. An elite legion now tries against the regular musket and dies promoting the regular. That is, however, the last defensive unit. A vet legion strikes, kills a wounded musket and is promoted. Another vet assaults the wounded musket and succeeds. Another legion assault fails. The next legion kills the last musket and there is a regular knight showing which withstands the next legion. Another legion wounds the knight but the knight is promoted to elite. Next legion cripples the knight but dies. The crippled knight is finally slain. It required eleven legions to take the city, which is burned.

We have 338 legions in the field.

Swing the gates closed on Alex's troops in th south, then snap the trap. That will hamstring his offense in the north.

Spend a couple of turns healing up and positioning for the rush north. The alliance with Alex can be cancelled at any time that's convenient.

Above all be patient. There are a lot of troops to move for optimum positioning. Once the war with Alex starts the legions in the south will arrive at the northern battlefields very quickly. The rail line is almost complete all the way to Urfa.

The Save

I think about 30 legions each for his top 2 cities should kill his production. I would also get all the legions in the south gathered and split them in 2 groups to continue the westward push. If you do it right you can keep the workers building rails underneath the SOD's and then be able to reinforce as soon as you land.

Fine by me. It shouldn't last more than one more go round. Most likely less. A couple of greek cities per turn and mop up his outlying towns.

PreTurn: wake some units; get as many legions on the rail track as possible; continue circling Greek units; rush some barracks and legions in the south

IBT: Alex moves troops and founds Phocaea at the end our our rail line, this is really bad, as he cuts our connection and we now have some troops in his territory while I can't make rop

1330ad: move legions, build rails

IBT: Alex demands we leave - we have to automove; Cleo wants peace, military academy completes

1335ad: hurring an army costs 3.200 gold - we have to wait 1 turn; aliance with Alex runs out, we cancel peacefully only to declare after that, we have to rush a harbor in Antium; battle in the fields: we kill 3 med.inf., 5 Longbows, 3 Knights and 1 Musket, we lose 3 legions, we get 1 army; now have more than 100 legions in front of blasted Phocaea, close in on Argos and Athens

IBT: we lose 7 legions and kill 1 knight, lose 2 colonies, some riots

1340ad: raze Phocaea; hurry an army for 1.476; rail-network back to New Antium nearly complete; battle in the fields: we kill 12 med.inf., 7 longbows, 3 muskets while losing 8 legions and getting 2 armies

IBT: we lose 4 legions killing 1 med. inf.

1345ad: disband the ironclads (we are not allowed to build them), lose 7 legions, kill 2 muskets and raze Argos; lose 1 legion, kill 2 muskets and 1 longbow razing Fusta; kill 1 knight, 3 med.inv., 1 longbow, 3 muskets on open ground, losing 7 legions

IBT: lose 4 legions

1350ad: rush another army; razing Athens losing 17 legions, killing 7 muskets and a longbow; killing 3 med.inf., 2 longbows and 2 knights while losing 1 legion and getting 2 armies in the open

The stack of 4 galleons is on its way to Santander (Cleo's last city). There's an unloaded army with many legions on a hill near Delphi. I shipped massive ammounts of workers to railroad the front line near Urfa. I see no reason for stopping or pillaging - there are no greek counterattacks of any importance. East of Sparta is Greeks last salpeter. Shipping point is Nanking - all worthwhile cities on the mainland are connectec by rail to the harbor.

Good luck - not sure if I get it back.

Rousing set!!!

I quit counting after 5 armies gained in battle.

Wiping out the troops in the south was key to crippling Greek counterattacks, :bounce:

Turn 1340 was nice! 2 more armies. Our production will outweigh theirs so it is just a matter of time.. Use the mountains, hills where possible even if it means 1 turn delay to attacking. Put the stacks under an army and kill a town verytime you meet up.

Good luck with RNG.

I have returned! Sorry for not posting a skip message, but I didnt have time to do it!
Nice turns... razing Athens was really good job! :goodjob:

I would like to play my turns after Conehead and Barbslinger (as usually).

Grs01 –1350AD
Preturn – Go around and rush some legions and markets. Check all cities and adjust overgrowing Iznik to tax men. Looks like we are liable to lose our ex- Otto cities, we’ll see.
IT – Have one knight come out to battle. We lose.
[1] 1355 – Knock off 2 minor cities but one of them had silk. Huge SOD’s moving on Sparta and Thermopolye. Load 15 new legions and an amy for passage to Greece conflict. MM’ing some cities to try and get to 15spt. Veii comes up 1 spt short for 30.
IT – Lot’s o’ legions built.
[2] 1360 – Delphi falls. Both armies go down to 5hp and the next two vet legions finish off 2 muskets. No luck with the armies so far. Thermopolye falls. Sparta is next on the hit list. Sent a worker to go make a colony on gems.
IT – Builds
[3] 1365 – Sparta falls. Ephesus falls with only 1 musket guarding. We have 378 legions. Spend about 3000g rushing legions and aqueducts and such. We still make 658gpt and have 631g in bank. Knock off Bingol on the western front. The last far east Greek town goes down. There are 15 towns left to tackle.
IT – With the new builds and the losses of last round we now have 396 legions. +18.
[4] 1370 – Synop falls. We could have taken the gems but I have a new colony now. Mycenae and SunTzu’s is ours. I pause here to check domination limit. We’re miles away so I keep it. Corith, Cherborg and Thessalonica are next.
IT – SunTzu is taken back to burn pop. WLTE everywhere.
[5] 1375 – Take SunTzu back and get a leader finally. Corinth falls. Thessalonica falls along with Cherborg. We land to take out Cleo with an army vs. some spears. Knossos should fall next turn along with Artesium.

About 35 more legions are landing. It’s in mopup mode for sure.
