Guess the Map II: witty sequel titles failed me

My guess is going to be along the lines of separatism. The grey has separatist groups that are a main force in politics. Yellow is that their has been a minor political influence. Orange means their have been civil wars over separatist movements. Red means that their is currently a war with separatist elements and Purple means no separatist movements at all.

Serbia? Spain?

I reckon the formation of modern Pakistan, Oliver Cromwell and various bits of Russia might be considered a little bit more than minor influences. I've also heard nothing about a current war in Switzerland.

Red and purple are all landlocked, yet not all landlocked countries are red and purple.

True. Think harder about that.

i thought for a while it would be linked to navy (i know switzerland got one)...
fishing industry or fish consumption is not that either i think, there are incoherence for Iceland, portugal and norway compared to Japan...

is it land related or sea related?

I was thinking ship registration but Greece is average as are the flag-of-convenience countries in the Caribbean.

I think we need another tip, like "political", "geographical", "societal" or whatever ;-) The whole map looks really as to something related to having or not having a coast, but that ... well yeah.

I tried Location of Capitals and land and sea borders, still nothing ... Membership in an international organization doesn't bring us further as well.. It's probably very trivial...

But numerous landlocked countries, as well as teh country with the longest coastline and the small island countries that have long coasts relative to land area are all in the middle (landlocked countries are presentin every group, even ignoring those that have a significant body of fresh water0.

Yep. So what?

If a country has a coastline, then it must be in the bottom, orange group, the middle, grey group, or the yellow group. If I make the hint any more blatant than that, I may as well just post the answer.

Percent of the countries borders that are shared with another nation?

This map is tough

Percentage of the population that is foreign-born?
