Beef production?
Brazil is the largest exporter of beef in the world - In 2005, over 28 million heads of cattle were slaughtered there. It's not meat consumption either, Brazilians generally eat huge amounts of meat, especially beef and pork.

My guess is going to be along the lines of separatism. The grey has separatist groups that are a main force in politics. Yellow is that their has been a minor political influence. Orange means their have been civil wars over separatist movements. Red means that their is currently a war with separatist elements and Purple means no separatist movements at all.
