Are the colors of the country of some relation to the war or are they just things the countries had in common at the time of it? I am aware that most of the major allies (let's not argue about Canada and Australia) are black so I think it is the first, but I not certain.

They are something the black and grey countries had in common in the aftermath of World War II, although the data for all of the colours can be applied since then.

Black is the UN Veto powers. And gray is countries that used to be part of a veto power. So I'm gonna guess, date of admission to the UN? Or something else involving the UN?

EDIT: Those were bad guesses... How about territorial losses and gains directly from WWII? Or amount of troops stationed in foreign countries years after the war?

It is to do with the UN, and black and grey do mean that countries have veto power and used to have it, respectively. The map isn't, however, the date of admission to the UN.

It looks to be vaguely linked to population. Is it... where the nations' delegates sit (how close to the front) when they're all in that big delegates room?

Is it when countries first became sitting members on the UN security council (?)? Black for the permanent veto members, and grey for those countries that have never been on it.

I'd rather say number of times as a seating member of the security council. Though the relation to WW2 does seem to escape me. Was that just a red herring? If so, then please, don't do that anymore, it's annoying. (because the black = veto powers was fairly obvious, I just chose not to point it out, as it was clearly WW2-related, the United Nations is post-WW2. But I guess that was what the smiley was for?)
