I have two TV's both are a heap of broken old junk that I haven't thrown out, and somehow brought here to my new house, But I do want to get another, So that I may watch some College Football, I’m love collegiate sports, but other than that, really don't have any use for terrible programming. Plus if I want to watch movies, or the Simpson’s
smile.gif
I can do it right here on the Computer.
There is no Guilt in Pleasure; there is no way to have such a thing unless we are speaking of two different definitions. I do confide that pleasure can be divvied out of guilt. Although it’s not a firm practice and only leads to a stalemate at best.

------------------
I am. That is enough. I have all the promise that each day offers to me. I am. The past is nothing but what has brought you here and the future is what you make of today. I am. We are each a force in life.

TV, TV... Ah yes. I have one! But I don't look at it too much: documentaries, films and sometimes the news. I take the program and if I don't see anything, simply don't turn it on. I loved Big Brother for a single reason: my girlfriend likes it, so when she was watching it, I was playing Civ without troubles
smile.gif

BTW, I worked for a year in UPC, a cble sender. I was in charge of the video-library of some of the most "magnificent" channels: Extreme and Sport 1, and had my experiences with Reality TV and Club... and now I am

Guilt is non exsistant. TV in general is crap, only thing I watch regularly is NHL baby!!!

And staring at a screen until my head is pounding, not realizing I am starving myself to death because I can't feel the hunger, smoking too much, ALL thanks to Sid and his game...

Hey guys, lighten up.

I think that the theme of Goodbye_Mr_Bond's thread here was VERY lighthearted and meant for people to sheepishly admit to things that are maybe slightly embarrassing but funny (watching Survivor, drinking Zima, etc). Somehow it's become a discussion on the evils of televison and the philosophy of guilt and pleasure.

Look, I have televisions. In fact I have three in the house. I know that there is plenty of bad programming, but there are times when a bit of silly entertainment isn't so bad. I still love my books and I have plenty of other things that go on in my life, but at times I LIKE bonding with my stepson as we watch the Yankees play, or laugh with my wife to reruns of Seinfeld, or even sit by myself and laugh like a mental patient to The Simpsons. I don't think that my intelligence is dropping because of these things. And yes, I do like The History Channel as well as Discovery, The Learning Channel, etc. But hey, who couldn't go for some mindless fun once in a while??

Wow, I'm not one to usually rant. Sorry, I guess I shouldn't complain that a thread is off on a tangent and then extend that tangent
smile.gif

And hey (to further another tangent), as far as philosophy goes - I was a philosophy minor in college and I like deep discussions as much as any. I've read many posts from civfans here and I am always impressed by the arguments and the thoughtfulness of many members. I guess my only problem here is that discussions centering around the point/counterpoint of guilt and pleasure was not the intention of this thread - while it could be an interesting discussion to be sure.

OK, that's it. I didn't mean to offend or start arguments here. For those of you who've been around for a while and know my posting habits, you know that I am not prone to these outbursts.

I guess I take silliness very seriously

Thanks Kev.

So let's get back on track... I was going to admit to having enjoyed Jerry McGuire too, but that may prevent this current can of worms from being closed

so:

I'll admit to being a closet country-music fan.

No, not 'new' country, but older stuff like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. And Kenny Rogers rocks, baby!

Oh, and floppa, I had a Smirnoff Ice last night. Dangerously tasty...

I have to admit that I am a closet cartoon watcher. Not adult cartoons like The Simpsons (which I do like), but I keep the cartoon network on my favorite list on my remote.

I get a kick out of Dexter's Laboratory, the X-Men, and even the Power Puff Girls.

I have an 11-year-old in the house, and I have to admit that there have been times when I tell my wife "Oh, Brian must have left that on - you can change the channel if you'd like". All the while I'm cringing inside because I'll never know if Bubbles will be OK.

There was a time when I liked TV, when it was full of good movies and documents.
Nowadays Finnish TV-Channels have taken the worst part of TV in USA.
It's now just crap.

I really enjoyed "Wanted" on channel 4...and I confess I love "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and I watch "The Bill"...

Surprised no-one has the guilty pleasure of going to strip clubs...which is good!

I'm not guilty about this, but I reckon that some of you out there are going to consider it downright shameful so hell....
I thought that Take That were going to be the new Beatles. I wasn't swooning over the acres of flesh displayed or anything, nor going into paroxysms whenever one of them got a new hairdo, but I thought that they produced lively, fun pop music and had some good tunes (written for them). I'm not claiming that they were the revelation they promised to be, but they knock all of the boyband tosh floating around the charts today into a cocked hat. Boyzone, Boyz2men (are they still going) and all the other hordes of all presentation, no product pop music has killed any talent, or sent them so far underground that should they ever produce anything good then it will be blocked from the charts by the latest guff that Stock Aitken and Waterman or Puff Daddy are promoting. To be honest, I know nothing about pop music and am happy to stay that way. Most music written since 1980 is rubbish anyway.

Boyz2men were actually quite talented imo. Not my thing really, but they clearly had talent.

I've never even heard of take that. Are they a uk group or what?

And most music written since 1980 is garbage? I don't really agree with that....maybe the 90's

Are you a new romantic Drake? <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/lol.gif" border=0>
REM did some really nice early stuff, and have remained tolerable at best, but most groups just haven't lasted. U2 have a huge following but I don't get it at all. The 80s produced some of the most unutterable guff ever listened to on an FM/AM receiver. Disco was dead, funk was dying, hip hop and rap just stayed alive, but barely - good song, but the Blondie hip hop tune set a terrible trend for other people to rip it off in their own "upbeat" numbers. It was wall to wall pop sirens belting out lyrical ballads that would have sent Odysseus mad.
Meatloaf. Your Honour, I rest my case.

Hey Kitten, I would say strip clubs COULD be a guilty pleasure of mine, but I ain't made of money...
smile.gif
It's a little wasteful on the cash to have that as a guilty and regular pleasure... We all suffer from playing too much Civ though.

I won't admit to much, as someone might read this one day. Suffice it to say that I will confess to not minding Hanson, and to occasionaly reading Tom Clancy and Richard Marcinko.
And, goodbye_mr_bond, or Ernst Stavro Blofeld as I prefer, there is a similar spelling trick so that "fish" is spelt "ghoti"

Guilty pleasures? Well besides strip clubs, menage a trois, S&M, occasional bondage and... uh oh... ahem... err... well, ok... I admit it:

I actually had great fun watching Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls
eek.gif

I mean, it's such a great comedy
