Strategy discussion

Previous posts by Dhoomstriker and CivConVict:

Spoiler :

Dhoomstriker:

- Could your Worker afford to build your capital a Mine by chopping one of the Forested Hills squares, so that it doesn't have to work an unimproved square?
- Your capital will also soon need a Military Police unit for its 5th population point. What is your plan there--garrison a Chariot? Build a Warrior to act as the City garrison?

CivConVict:

My plan was to go chariot -> settler -> chariot -> settler -> garrison unit (probably chariot). The reason the worker is still chopping is that I have laid my eyes on that gold hill and want to get that settler out asap. It may be a little too ambitious but greed got the better of me.

Are we going to kill Greece?

Spoiler :

Greece has 2 cities left. There is a problem though (spoiler alert: map knowledge)
Spoiler :

By looking at one of the screenshots of GKey, we can abstract that Greece has a city on a desert hill :( . Can we still conquer it with chariots alone? Do we have to abuse Cease Fire?

Are we going to kill Greece?

[/spoiler]

Do we really have a choice?

Spoiler :

The city on a hill is a problem and he has one other city i think (can't check now). He may even have copper with that other city and if he has phalanxes chariots become useless.

I guess scouting the rest of his lands and pillaging resources should be in order first.

map spoiler

Spoiler :

I think Justin will become very big since he has room to expand in the west. He and Saladin both have their own religion so we probably need to choose who we want to be friends with. Personally i'm going with Justin.

I know it can't be avoided that we know more of the map then with a normal game but it feels a bit like cheating. :)

Strategy:
Spoiler :

I'm certainly going to try to kill Greece, but if not immediately I'll be looking to hook up the copper ASAP and take him out with Axes.

Beyond that, I'd think a bit of REXing is in order to fill in some of the gap between the two capitals, and grab that gold city if possible.

Spoiler :
Already played it out to turn 100, but I'll wait until this weekend to post the detailed result. I didn't do so well, however.

As for general strategy, I think there's very little room for wriggling. Settle gold (if possible) and copper, then go kill Alexander.

I am interested to see what religion Zara Yaqob adopts in your games and how you factor it into your long term plans (or if you do so at all). I think I may have made a tactical error here (probably due to my lack of experience in playing with these settings).

What's next after Alex - dead? Recovery or rush Zara/Justinian?

Recovery = economy -> marble wonders for failure gold/GPP AND Heroic Epic.
There are several ways to go about it, traditional TGL+NE, MoM+consecutive GAs to accelerate production...

The second part will be harder to do of course but it is certainly possible. (easily is not the best word, my bad!)

Another one of those holes in my game is that I never consider failure gold when planning. Shortsighted of me when I have stone/marble, I know.

Because of the strategy discussion in the last IC, I sold a tech for gold to Toku in the Boudica NC game and not only gained a turn of deficit research (it wasn't a lot of gold...) but also got a huge diplo+ with him. I like these IC games!

One of many reasons why any ind leader beats this PoS leader...

We won't get marble until Athens has it's cultural expansion, the only marble based wonder available in time is the Temple of Artemis and it's anyone's guess when it will be built by the AI. Plus we'd need to research Mysticism, Polytheism and Masonry ourselves to make use of it. Better to go for Aesthetics in my book. By the time we could cash in on Aesthetic wonders, however, I think we'd long be broke. Also chariots are basically outdated already, you'd have to chop/whip out a whole new army of axemen to have any real shot at killing a second AI. It would be nice to see you pull it off, but I think it's a stretch, even with an organized leader.

I've had another crack at the second go, here's what happened:
Spoiler :
I went for Alex and grabbed a couple more of his cities with chariots, then built a couple of cities around my capital. After that I had some serious economic problems so built infrastructure around cities and captured the barbarian chaps next to the gold. I've built some axe-fellas and researched Mysticism, Hunting and Iron Working.

It's not looking spectacular on the research front, but economy is starting to recover so I guess I'll catch up.
Well it's not anywhere near flawless, but I don't think I've lost the game just yet at least :D

Parthenon (and researching Literature) requires Polytheism to build... Mysticism is pretty much required unless you want to go with Libraries or rely on religion spread... Masonry is cheap with 2 discounts and a bunch of AIs grabbing the tech early on.

Going to Aesthetics right away is not, imo, the right solution.

375 BC, Turns 50 - 100

Spoiler :

I switched the espionage points towards Zara, which I forgot to do in the first 50 turns. I then decided to tech Mysticism before finishing Writing. I took Corinth and build a couple of more chariots (12 in total) to take Sparta. After 12 turns Greece was dead.

Civ4ScreenShot0019.jpg

The war went a bit too well and I had 9 chariots left.

Civ4ScreenShot0020.jpg

Soon I noticed that I was running a deficit at 0% science, so I made sure to settle near the gold and mine that as soon as possible.

Civ4ScreenShot0021.jpg

I researched Masonry and Hunting next and made sure to build a lot of cottages. Justinian was sending missionaries and I switched to Buddhism for happiness. I settled near the copper rather late and I'm only now building some new units to not get behind in power.

I was getting behind in techs, but managed to get Aesthetics with the help of running scientists. After that I researched Polytheism to build the Parthenon. I'm currently 1 turn research into Literature.

Athens generated a Great Scientist and I moved it to Babylon to build an academy there. I haven't decided if I want the Great Library in Athens or in Babylon.

Scary silence.:) How is it going?
And does Darius attack at pleased?

Just making sure if people still here. SGOTM, CiV, you know...:mischief:
Doing fine, thank you, and yes this capital is food poor! Considering immigration to Athens. :D

Well, here's my take:
Spoiler :
I managed to settle the gold city, which was really helpful, although I got myself into a cultural war with Peter for the wheat nearby.

As for the war effort, I went for Corinth first. Sparta looked rather uninviting being on a hill and I restricted myself to pillaging it at first.

But once I managed to draw out one of the three archers with a warrior as bait, Sparta fell as well and Greece was finally vanquished.

In my game both Zara and Peter converted to Hinduism, and I probably was a little too rush in joining them. I also cancelled my open border agreement with Justinian so they would not ask me to do so. That robbed me of any chance to trade techs with him, though. It likely would have been better to wait until after trading away Aesthetics.

Anyway, technology-wise I had researched Mysticism directly after finishing Writing and then went for Aesthetics. I wanted to trade for Monotheism and Monarchy, and with so few trading partners, I figured it would be better not having to trade for it. Here's the tech overview:

In the save I'm still researching Literature next, which is a big mistake, actually. I should be going for Drama, so I can trade it for Mathematics and then bulb Philosophy with my Great Scientist, that Athens will get in 7 turns.

As for the land:
western part:

eastern part:

I have way too few workers at the moment (only 8 for 9 cities) and also didn't pay much attention to worked city tiles and whipping, but at least I got the cities I wanted. A rather mediocre round.
