Handy 23 Random AWE

Have you gentlemen developed an orthodoxy for whether Masonry-Mathematics or Wheel-HBR should come first in AW?

I think masonry is typically preferred. From there I choose math next if pressure is heavy to get cats. If possible I like to get the wheel in before math so I can see where horses are and settle accordingly. HBR typically comes after math. Circumstances can change the order (math for SoZ for example), but I like a masonry, wheel, math path in general.

I think I would prefer to go the other way and not avoid the GA. Instead I would start churning out the legions and go for city captures of Portugal and overrun them before they can get anywhere. If we keep their cities we will grow faster than we would by normal expansion. We have a strong start, lets use it on the offensive and not give the AI time to establish itself.

I agree with greebley, that in this game we can afford to be super aggressive. hey, this is a great starting location with low difficulty setting. We should get the goal to get a victory as fast as possible.
I vote for expansion full speed and exploration to take them all out as soon as possible. Alos, we want to figure out whether this is continents, pangaea or archi. It would make the game easier to plan.

A third vote for Greebley's plan.

I think we can rule out a 'pelago given what we can see of the land mass so far.

I would certainly go aggressive against Portugal. Hopefully they will have little culture and we can keep their cities.

of course I knew I am up ;)
It was just that the server was down the whole day and I didn't get the save

Will restart my computer now and play Civ3, need to do that after Civ4 else my computer crawls

Pre-Turn
there are 3 warriors next to Cumae, I do hope they attack rather than going into our interior

IT well, maybe my hope was not good, since the 2nd wariiro actually beats our spear
people want to celebrate this misfortune with a palace expansion

1. 1725BC
reduce science a little, feudalism still in 3

IT another warrior suicides against archer

2. 1700BC
beat 1 warrior with elite archer hoping for a MGL, didn't happen

IT timing is right and we get a settler in Rome with growth to 6

3. 1650BC
insert an MP warrior first

4. 1625BC
going for a further away spot so we can expand faster, reduce science

IT iron is now online and we get masonry
CB is cheap and we don't really need the wheel with legions
Portugese start the Colossus for us

5. 1600BC
beat another warrior to clear the path for us to the east, Rome goes for a spear since warriors are obsolete

6. 1550BC
zzzz

7. 1525BC
found Neapolis next to games and sugar and another warriors thinks he can harress Cumae

IT well this time the warrior does not attack but goes after our workers
CB is in, go for maths next

8. 1500BC
e-archer beats warrior on the open, no leader

IT a barb horse shows up in the west, how I hate them
Rome does the settler cycle again, Veji finishes spear and goes for worker
and we get our first legion, Portugese, better watch out

9. 1475BC
also spot 3 barb warriors in the southeast
we might need to clear them first and settle that land before going after Portugese

10. 1450BC
legion settler pair on the way to hill to settle

with legions, we should be able to kick the Portugese properly
maths is due in 12

by the way this is turn 62??? why are we at this odd number?

Because you played twelve turns, losing track of 1675 BC and 1575 BC.

oh my, just shows how senile I have become already :crazyeye:
sorry to the next player...

Pre Turn
I changed Rome to settler and Antium to a spear in order to get another core city down sooner. I would like to be as big as possible when the GA starts.

I’ll skip 1 and 2 to get us back on track.

Turn 3 1450
Archer kills barb horse.

Turn 4 1400 bc
Neaopolis – Walls – rax
Found Pompeii Grumpus and start a barracks

Turn 5 1375
Rome – settler – Legion
Light pressure, so I changed Antium back to Legion.
Kill a barb

Turn 6 1350
Veii – worker – worker
Kill another barb

Turn 7 1325
Kill another barb with no promotion
Antium – Legion – Spear
I think we should get Rome to a 4 turn settler factory with 4 turn spears from Antium while we build enough legions for an assault on Portugal.
And I think I lean toward building the Glib. ;-) We'll see.

Turn 8 1300
Legion kills barb and goes elite
Turn research down so we will not run out of gold.
We definitely need the 4 turn settler pump so we can afford to keep research going.

Turn 9 1275
:wow: Five of barbs appear in the NW, I suspect the random has turned out to be raging.
Cumae – Legion – Legion

Turn 10 1250
Rome – Legion – Settler (back on a on 4 turn rotation now)
You will need to mine some tiles near Antium to get it to 4 turn spears since I lent a tile to Pisae. I suggest we keep the cities on +2 food so we can get as big as possible for the GA. MM to +1fpt for a turn if you can complete a build.
Portugal has a spear and archer stack in the east chasing our archer that is over by the incense.
We need more workers for a road network, and Veii can make one every 5 turns. I hate to keep the city that size but I think we should.
Getting the incense now may be easier than taking it later. Now that the core is down we could build a CxxC network along the hills to get the incense.

This is beginning to look like GR6 (Persia), in which our separation from the AI civs made the start easy, but then turned out to be the main problem in a surprisingly difficult game.

I think your idea of a four-turn settler cycle in Rome and a four-turn spearman cycle elsewhere for garrisons is obviously correct, given the situation.

I got it and will play in a few hours.

Don't like the idea of building spers, legionaries have better defense and i think we wouldn't like to keep interior cities defended ;) I'll see how the game would feel though.
