Harry Potter Modpack

i read ur ideas on religion, but must admit i am not quite happy with them.

for example, u could put harry and voldemort in the power section but that would mean (in civ terms) that they'd both be using the same techs, units, buildings (the ones that are bound to religion).
But in my opinion their methods of achieving power are completly different. One is depending on fear, death eaters, threads and the likes. The other on friendship, love (for his parents, his friends etc.), morals (this sounds lame, but i want to make my point clear).
Thus i think they should have access to different techs etc. But if u wanted to play a game "harry" or "Voldemort" style u would choose the same religion via portente (isn't that potente by the way, dunno my latin is to rustic), and that seems wrong to me.

I would like to see the religions more precise. So that when u choose a certain religion u kinda choose ur style of playing, wether it's "good" or "evil" (in terms of the books) or maybe "neutral" like to pick ur example the centaur thingy. And i wouldn't mind seeing muggleism in there too. I mean there is war going on between wizards and muggles in the books too (at least between voldemort and the muggles, though they might be ignorant towards him).
that would already be four religions. 5th one i don't know. maybe teachings of hogwarts or sth. that would allow better access to certain field of hogwarts teachings (maybe some beasts (due to hagrid) better use of certain terrain types or resources (sprout and co.) maybe minor things of both the evil (due to serpentard) and good (due to hogwarts) religions might be included in the hogwarts religion. so that might be a kind of, not sure wether u want to be good or evil gaemplay.

I know my writing isn't the best. The ideas are all kinda unorganized and maybe a bit confusing. But i hope it's possible to see what i mean.

yes potente is correct. I misstyped it in the post, in the game it is correct. It is the conjugation of the noun portenti. My latin is probably about as rusty as yours if not more. I took 1 year of latin 6 years ago. Hence why nihil is not conjugated, because I don't remember how.

I like your idea of having one religion played two different ways. I am not sure how I would do it though.

yes muggles could be more dependend on eletricity and co. but if muggles are a race, then they wouldn't be different form the other races. Difference of races aren't that great. They do have different leaders (with different characteristics) and maybe a different Uu, but the techs are all the same. that's why i suggested muggleism as a religion, because Kael showed that linking techs to religion is posiible.
Maybe there is a possibility that u could make a certain race, a prerequisite for a certain tech (don't know if that's possible in civ though). This would for example result in only muggles developong knighthood (e.g) whilst the wizardy races would all develop warlocks or sth. I have no idea of the civ code, but doubt that this is possible.

gianfrancozola: hmmm, i see what your gettin at now, I actually agree with everything you said, it would be good if there was 'Muggleism' and all that jazz. but it would be out of place with all the other latin 'religeons'.

I think it may be possible to make techs race specific, (though this is coming from someone who knows minimal XML and no python) if you can do religeon specific, why not?

Muggles could develop gun powder, electricity, aviation, petrochemical engeneering, machinary and all of the technological things....

OHHH!! (sorry about my random train of thought) in the mod Fall from Heaven, Kael, the producer, created a tech that no races can research, (so that certain units, like heros, never become obsolete) you could impliment something like that here, only make it so it cant be researched or traded, and make Muggles start with it. this tech would then be a prerequisite tech for all other muggle techs. Then do the same thing for the magical races, but with magical techs, ie OoTP start with the Wizardry tech and Wichcraft tech (fror example) these are then prerequisits for the other magical techs, poitions, transfiguration, herbology etc..
if you needed some help or advice on that im sure Kael or some one else a little more experienced than me would be able to help out/ see if it is do-able.
(i hope someone was able to understand all that)

the idea with the techs that are nonresearchable is a really good one. if sth.like thatis possible, than this is definetly interesting. If the techs could be made race specific that wuold be the (an) other interesting idea.

an other thin. lazarus if u need ideas for wonders, units, townnames, pics etc. pm me.Did u think about these things yet, and if so (which u probably did) which ones u want to include? Don't have any programmers skills (xcept C) and very limited graphicers, so can only offer my limited brain capacities :crazyeye:

another idea that just crossed my mind.
Instead of antique, classic, modern eras u could have book 1, book 2 etc.
In every book new spells, enemies, persons are introduced (comparable to development of new techs). As u wanted to include many different lessons from hogwarts anyway, u could put them in chronological order. The new spells are always more advanced or at least more complicated so that would kind of legitimate the different eras to be renamed. For example, building of the wonder philisopghers stone would trigger book 2. Chamber of secrets book 3, etc. This might not be adequate for a civ game, but maybe sth. to think about

Man, you two have some seriously good ideas.

I think muggles are going to stay out of my mod, at least for now. They really don't have much of a role to play in the war. I have been planning on including techs that will allow the use of some muggle weapons and technologies, they will be classified under "muggle studies".

The idea of using an un-researchable tech assigned as a starter tech as a way to create a civilization specific (or unit, or wonder, or leader, or...) tech tree section is pure genius!! I am seriously going to be reconsidering how I am working my tech tree. The idea of needing a world wonder before some techs can be researched is perfect!!

gianfrancozola -> I will definatly take you up on your offer. Especially for towns, buildings and units. I am pretty set with my techs (I have 79), although I will be revamping those a bit.

That goes for everyone else in here too. If you have ideas for units, buildings, towns, magics, whatever, pm me, post it here. I have already gotten alot of ideas for this mod from the posts so far. KEEP THEM COMING. My imagination can only get me so far.

Here are the Wonders I have come up with so far.
World Wonders: 16
Hogwarts
Chamber of Secrets
Ministry of Magic Office
St. Mungos
Diagon Alley
Gringots
Philosopher’s Lab
Azakaban
The Leaky Cauldren
Olivanders
Wizengamot
King’s Cross Station
Number 12 Grimmauld Place
Ottery St. Catchpole
Forbidden Forest
Hogesmeade

National Wonders: 3
Dragon Breeding Grounds
Griffin Nest
Hippogriff Nest

Projects:
Floo Network
The Daily Prophet

Any ideas would be appriciated. :)

Wonders:

Hoarcrux
Tri Wizard Tournment
The Prophecy
Dumbledors Army
Unification Statue (wizard, elf, centaur, ?goblin)
For Voldermort getting his body back was a Wonder like feat Might be a wonder only he can build but must build semi early in the game.

Guess some of these could be techs.

is it possible to have sth. like:
all three wizard schools as world wonders, but u could only build one of them, each one giving different boni. The other two u didn't build can still be build by AIplayers.

other wonders:
quidditch world cup stadium..
and i love the ship which that russian school had, kinda like magellans expedition:)..
and sth. like "Peace with the muggles", in book 6 or sth. dumbledore visits the prime minister, so they know of eacht other and in the past wizards and witches were killed, so there must have been some kind of peace treaty. if the thing with the schools is possible u could have two wonders (peace and war) excludiing each other..

Excellent ideas.

Added to the List

World Wonders:
The Hall of Prophecy

Projects:
Tri Wizard Tournament
Quidditch World Cup

Technologies:
Ressurection (will probably change the name)

Thank you gianfrancozola and webrider for the ideas! :)

gf -> the races are still the same so far. I haven't been putting too much thought into that yet, I am currently working on the tech tree, which may be pushed into phase 3.

Anybody have resource ideas? I have alread been thinking of various magical creatures (i.e. unicorns insted of horses) along with Wand trees and things of that nature.

Could some of the pranks and gags that Ron's brothers create be something? Not sure if they are a resource, Wonder, or nothing....

Maybe Owls could be a resource? Gotta have the jelly beans. Brooms? Charms?

the shop they own could be a wonder, or a building. wonder might be better though, so that there is only one. Increasing happyness and decreasing war-weariness or sth.
resources: isn't there some internet site with all the things snape keeps in his cabinet. nearly all these things could make resources (thinking of that weed harry ate in the tournament). or the plants used by prof. sprout (is she the plant teacher? think so, not sure)

Good point about the shop. Maybe if you create the shop/Wonder you then get x numbers of resources to trade out.

Snape's Cabinet? That would be a cool Wonder too.

excellent.

New World Wonders:
Weasley’s Wizarding Weezes
Snape’s Storeroom

I like the resource ideas as well. I think jelly beans at least would make a great resource. Something like the hit singles.

sailor how far along are u with the next phase of the mod? I want to play it!! :)
U still need those names for the citys? If so, I do have some time today and try to come up with some. How many citynames does one need per nations. Abbout 15, 20 or sth.? I never found more than 6 or 7, but don't play the huge mapsizes so that might be due to that.

i like the idea of the stores in Diagon Alley and Hogesmeade as wonders and not just the entire alley or town.

Diagon Alley
Flourish and Blott's Wizard Bookshop
Madam Malkin's Robes For All Occasions
Ollivander's Wand Shop
