Was just seeing something on Tv reminded me that Japanese, at least to someone who doesn't speak it, always sounds harsh. Sometimes German does. I imagine English might to people who don't speak it.

On the other hand the romance languages and some others rarely sound harsh except when the content and intent of it really is.

Opinions?

German doesn't have to sound harsh.

i don't think German is a romance language... i thought it was of a different language family

It is, romance are based on Latin, the language of the Romans. Hence 'Romance'.

Japanese or Russian.

German is NOT a Romance language. So yeah, you're right. :)

I don't think Japanese is harsh-sounding.

I'd have to say harsh sounding are German and Arabic.

German is... Germanic. Clever, I know.

And I agree with Ansar. Arabic just sounds horrible.

Any language is going to sound harsh when it's being screamed and followed by the deafening sound of an explosives charge being detonated.

lolerskates?

When my mother-in-law talks to one of her relatives about mundane life it still sounds awful. It's an ugly language.

Meh, none of you have ever heard my version of English, especially when I'm at work. I can't imagine any language sounding angrier.

Yes, lolerskates.

I always thought it sounded kinda exotic. Maybe a little phelmy.

In my opinion Chinese is the harshest sounding language, because (I think, I'm not too sure of this) the different tones and things required while speaking it always make people sound angry whenever they speak even though they aren't. That might be because of the fact that most Chinese I've heard comes from parents speaking to their children while I'm at their house...

EDIT: I hope I didn't come off sounding racist when I posted that. You never know..

Nah, everyone knows being the child of Asian born parents is prison.

I love the harsher sounding languages. German, Russian, those Slavic ones in the Balkans. The romance languages just don't hold much appeal for me, though oddly I think actual Latin sounds pretty cool. Never could get into the eastern languages.

German, probably.
Spanish sounds beautiful.
English is ok, sometimes just... mumbling.
I wonder, how Russian sounds for people who don't understand it?

My girlfriend's mom is an off-the-boat (her term) Chinese woman who speaks no English. Oi vey.

Somehow, Layla doesn't speak Chinese either. I've no idea how they communicate, but they do. o_O
