The internet protocol and fax protocols are not compatible, the internet is a set of digital packages and fax is a continuous analogue stream. To fax by the internet your computer would have to translate a graphics or text scan into fax (lots of programs for that) then translate into internet, then send to another INTERNET modem, into a computer to translate into fax, then export to the fax receiving machine. The receiving end would have to be set up for this. There are internet fax services (monthly or annual fee) available where you send them a graphics or text file, they translate into fax and send it by phone to the receiving fax machine.

You computer likely could be configured with with both the cable modem and a fax (and voice) modem and you could just plug it into the regular phone line when you want to make a fax.

Ok, do you have Road Runner cable-modem service? Because if you do they have a fax-to-computer plan for like 4.95 USD a month. It allows you to send(need a scanner) and recieve(email and printer to print) faxes thru your computer. I'd check out your ISPs main web page and see if anything is offered.

Also, I'd suggest posting question that are of a technical nature to the computer forum.
