Have you ever played a whole game... WITHOUT RELOADING???

....

once you touch CivIII, you are hooked. Before I left my last job, I was talking to a buddy of mine and told him to try the game, he would love it. He is a fan of SimCity and plays nothing but, he said he would not be interested....

I met him for lunch a few months later and he was telling me about this great new game his wife picked up for him and he can not stop playing. The game..... you guessed it CIV 3

Back on topic.... I don't reload. If I ever play mulitplayer, I have to be ready to recover from stupid mistakes so better get used to them now.

I don't reload. In addition, if a game becomes totally hopeless, I retire logging it as a loss.

I only got through half a game once before my mistakes caught up to me. My large, highly technological and militarily under prepared civilization was steamrollered in 6 turns. It was painful.

this happens far to often to me

I just dont like the Fighting way, Rather do Culture etc :king:

There are only a few cases where I'd reload.
1) If I make a stupid mistake. For example, one of my first games I built the UN and was in the process of dominating the world. However, I didn't understand what the UN actually was. I got asked the question Vote for Secretary General? and I thought, sure, why not. I had no real clue that there was a way to win or lose a diplomatic victory, so I went ahead with the vote and lost a diplo.:crazyeye: I shoulda reloaded that game, but was too pissed.

2) If I hit the wrong key or move something accidently that could have a big impact on the game.

3) To test something.

4) To 'milk' at the end. Since there is no real way of determining when a domination victory will occur, I could see reloading a game to score more points if you don't want a domination victory.

I have actually never done any of these except the testing thing. Just doesn't seem right to me.

Hitting the wrong key is the only time I save & reload - moving in the ancient ages down roads and across rivers is the main one - it often causes me to move the "next" unit in a random direction.

I normally only have time for the GOTM at the moment, so reloading is a no-no (except in the circumstances above ;) ).

In old games I used to reload occasionally, but I would go back 30 or so turns - basically to see what would happen if I tried a completely different tactic - or made a completely different decision. :)

Bill - suggest you get "mapstat" - it tells you how close you are to the domination limit. Its allowed in the GOTM (providing you "know" most of the map). :)

When I want to try a game without reloading I turn "autosave" off, it's just too tempting to reload if something goes wrong.

I HAVE been able to get through a couple of games without reloading though.

Reload? Not since I was the greenest of newbies. :D

I can accept "honorable" reloads, like many above have described. Although, I find when I am playing I don't usually bother even in those conditions. Move a worker to the wrong square? Chalk it up to "garbled orders" and press on. :)

i hardly ever reload i did a few times in sg's when i went over the turn limit but other than then only if its a really important turn

The only reason for me to reload is to get some sleep. These games take days to complete if you don't automate the workers

I never reload!

Although I just got over an addiction of saving and retiring so I can see the map...although I have sworn that off! You may not consider that an exploit, but I do, which is why I don't do it anymore.:D

sheesh, i didnt know sooo many people saved and reloaded:rolleyes:
i havnt ever saved and reloaded, part of the game is taking chances and bad luck, if you have a well thought out defense and offense you shouldnt have any huge problems. as for getting steamrolled in a few turns, just get a few allies on you side and you shouldn't have too many enemy units to defend against.
my last game i was in i was building the palace in one city and fp in another (to switch to wonders) and forgot about my fp, so i got the fp built right next to my palace, but too far from the coast to warrent moving my palace, whoops, but i thought oh well and left it, because of that i had the option of getting sun tzu's or sistine but not both now, i went for sistine and ended up missing sun tzu's. it sucked but it's part of the game. its knida nice when an attack fails miserably and i have to come up with a new plan, or i get attacked by a gigantic military and need to fight for the existance of my civ, it adds to the fun of the game:)

I used to reload quite a bit - for bad combat results, bad goody huts, etc. But then, one day, when I was regularly beating regent level, I decided to try a game without reload for two reasons:
1) Frankly, the AI doesn't get to reload, so in essence, I'm cheating if I get that opportunity. If I can't beat regent (the "no-cheating" level without reloading, the AI is better than me!)
2) Reloading ain't gonna happen in multiplayer games. Better get my strategy ready for when multiplayer comes out.

I tried my one game without reloading and I haven't gone back since. I fully admit restarting a game when my first warrior hits barbarians at the first goody hut who kill him, take my $$, and kill my worker (I hate that), but for the most part, I don't reload.

Yes, my skill level went from "high regent" to "low regent" when I stopped reloading, but I've worked up to "high monarch" now, and it's a true "high monarch."

To all those who still reload - enjoy by all means, but don't expect ANYONE to allow reloading in multiplayer games!!!

In my last game I've reloaded three times:

1. I was bombarding the AI to pieces with 150+Artillery. Pressing "B" can really get tiring. When I looked at the screen again, I have built colonies allover;)

2. I was bombarding and my mouse went weird. I bombarded a square 4 tiles away? This must have been some sort of bug and jsut didn't feel right to take a road from the AI corn, soon to be mine;)

3. Lastly I hate the "J" command. I know it is a must when moving around 150+ artillery, but what kills me is thhat once you have given a command, you need to wake the whol stack before you can given a new command. The old one sticks in their stupid heads. This problem increase by the fact that I can't play for longer than a few hours and when I continiue, my artillery moves into AI culture are rather than into the new area I've send them

I never reload.

That way, each game is a good way of training your skills for the games that you really don't want to screw up, i.e. the game of the month and, when PTW is released, MP games. If you make mistakes there, you can't reload (except for the accidental wrong move in gotm) and you'll need to have some experience with bad situations to survive.

Besides, I guess that if you reload you'll encounter the same situation over and over again, namely you having a great advantage over the AI. Would become a bit boring I think...

I have a very relaxed view on the matter.
I mean, my first goal is to have fun and enjoy the game. There have been games that I loved, in which I reloaded like there was no tomorrow.

Of course, that is valid when I'm playing only for myself. And, even in this case, I agree with those of you who say it is better if you don't. I think you can only appreciate it when you finish your first game without reloading: after that, there is only one way to play a true, pure Civ game. And, of course, I am now a follower and a believer of the true path... ;)

Still, as long as one knows what she is doing, i.e. that reloading is cheating, one is free. As I said, it's your game and you are the only one to decide how to play it.

However, when you play GOTM, tournaments and so on, there is simply no choice. You don't reload -you would be cheating yourself if you did, not the game or your opponents. Because you play to have fun, not to get the highest (cheated) score: there's no prize but the fun of playing and sharing the game with other people, and if you cheat you lose.
Sadly, there are people who submit cheated games to GOTM (just browse the forum), but dealing with that is another topic, I guess.

Having said this, I must say that I have never played a game where I never reloaded for any reason.

Hmmm... I guess it would be quite a challenge to start a game and end it in a single session, no stop, no reloading -not even to go to the toilet. A "CIV Marathon"... I think I'll give it a go...

One other thing I'd add - when I started, I did reload occasionally. But now I've got a bit more skillful, so don't really see the need to reload. On this, I would also suggest that not reloading makes you think more, and makes you a better player. And in the end, a good player will only get marginal benefit from reloading anyway - if one 'bad' result has that much of a dramatic effect on your game, then you need to rethink your strategy. ;)

I also will just start a new game if I'm really really messed up. The only time I reload is if the computer has crashed or I clicked on a wrong button. I have never used autosave. If I've screwed up I usually try to see if I can pull through it , but if I can't I just start over.
