Indeed. Sending a merchant across the world to earn 5 florins from a pile of silk near Baghdad just isn't worth it, if you ask me.
In addition to that, there is a limitation on how many merchants you may built at a given time, and they die of old age and can be destroyed by rival merchants or assassins. This is just way too complicated for a few hundred florins per turn.
With all these agents we can have priests, merchants, princesses, diplomats, spies, assassins and armies on the map. This is just way too complicated and clustered.
