Help with early game Tech race

I have been playing on Prince and i find that early on I fall a little behind in the tech race and have a hard time catching up. my score is usually in the middle of the pack. i'm talking about real early in the game, like only after 5-10 techs have been researched. any one have any tips on how to keep up on the tech race?

I try to research in one branch. One advanced knowledge is better than several less advanced. You also need some good relationship with at least two other players so you can trade your advanced knowledge.
