Help with installing BUFFY

I will say today when I used control alt and delete civ 4 was using 775mb of memory and Firefox over 400mb. It is lack of memory that seems to cause these issues? Perhaps having 2x2gb modules is not as good as having 1 4gb module?

How you can save after doing control alt delete when lagged out? For me I get lag... then I normally go Control/alt and delete. At this point I get the civ 4 has stopped working message. Can you save the game when it is lagged?

Played a whole game of non buffy game over last today and it only crashed once. I am using full graphics. Also window vista which may have issues itself.

What I find is that using Ctrl + Alt + Delete will cause the paged memory to be wiped... that means that whatever data Civ 4 felt was worthy of keeping in memory but where that data got stored on disk instead of in memory will need to be reloaded freshly from the disk... but... it'll be more likely to go into and stay in memory this time, rather than being paged away. If that theory holds true, it should result in a speed-up of recently-performed operations, such as looking inside of your various City screens.

From my understanding, having 2 x 2 GB memory modules is marginally better than a 1 x 4 GB memory module, as long as the two 2 GB memory modules are equivalent to each other, but I'm not sure whether the difference is more than negligible. I have never heard the opposite case of a single memory module being better.

I save the game first and THEN press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. That way, if Civ 4 happens to crash at that point (which used to happen occasionally in Windows 2000), then you don't need to replay anything and can simply load your most recent saved game when you load up Civ 4 again.

If Civ 4 is lagging, I'll just hit Ctrl + s to save the game and wait for the save dialogue to appear, then hit Enter when it does appear.

there is no difference in usage from OS viewpoint (unless HW issues) between 1x 4GB or 2x 2GB

you can get bigger speed with 2x 2GB though (dual channel)

since Civ is 32-bit application it can eventually use up to 2GB of ram, so running 4GB ram is kinda borderline (depends on OS, Win 7 for example can take up to 1GB, add to it couple of other applications and you can start to swap)

another problem is that Win OS in 32 bit version allows usage of 3.3GB out of those 4GB anyway, so that limits you even further.

oh and windows vista are really crappy OS... worst buy in my life... they are even bigger resource hog then anything... they just eat memory like it's some candy...

l could install windows 7. Vista has worked fine for me.

Finally got my new system up&running, but now I can't get BUFFY to work.

I installed it like I did on XP (now I have Win7): Civ4 complete edition - BtS 3.19 - Backup - Blue Marble - BUG & BULL in CustomAssets - BUFFY - disable use of CustomAssets.

AssetsChecker is green:

So I start the game, load BUFFY and it gives me error (I am logged in as Admin?):

BUFFY loads, start new game works, only with notice:

Tried to load this file and first time it freezes, second time loads without the menu:

Where's the problem?

Second problem I have with .bat files. Should file types be Application extension or BULL & ORIGINAL file types? I should've copy all that from old PC before I sold it...anyways I get BULL & ORIGINAL file types when I do that:

Then change paths in both .bat files:

And I get error:

I tried messing with that, renaming CvGameCoreDLL.dll.original to CvGameCoreDLL.original.dll and CvGameCoreDLL-original.dll to get Application extension file types in both C:\Program Files (x86)\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Assets and batches, but with similar results. Am I missing something?

Edit: File provided in SGOTM 18 Maintenance Thread - Austin Powers - GoldMember loads with no messages:

Edit2: Tried editing permissions as described here, nothing changed.

Regarding this .bat error, it's clear that it's reading an invalid path. Not sure why that is happening. The path looks fine in notepad, but the error shows "BTS\Assets" repeated twice. You should not need to mess with the naming of the DLL copies. (edit: hmmm...that could simply be a result of how the error code works and not actually reflective of an invalid path)

In case you typed it in, try instead to right click on the address bar in explorer and use "copy as text" to get the path and past it into bat file.

As for the other issue, did you set your BTS executable to "Run as Administrator". Also, try changing the file permissions on My Documents>My Games>Civ4 as well.

You'll want to change this line in the .bat file from:
set civ4path="C:\Program Files (x86)\2K Games\Fireaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Assets"
to:
set civ4path="C:\Program Files (x86)\2K Games\Fireaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\"

The .bat file is already set up to append the "Beyond the Sword\Assets" directory names for you. So, as lymond said, because your civ4path lists these directories a second time, you end up with invalid paths.

Yep, did all that and it worx!

Thanks guys! :goodjob:

Okay I have 468 issues with Buffy working. 402 errors. Mostly extra files or files not found. :(

I installed bug and buffy. I get a warning screen when I load BTS saying save will not count as a HOF save. Big red cross. hmmmm.

Running windows 7 64bit version.

It's working, but with lots of errors, right? BUG is installed in Custom Assets folder or as stand-alone mod? Screen of AssetsCheckers's BtS section would help.

Seems to be install under my documents/my games/ beyond the sword.

Rather than in the Games folder I created.

I must have installed buffy or bug in the wrong location to have nearly 402 errors.

The AssetChecker looks at the Registry to find the Civ4 installation directory, as far as I know. And it's decided to look for the HoFMod and BUFFY files in C:\Games\CIV4\Beyond the Sword, C:\Games\CIV4\Warlords, and C:\Games\CIV4\Beyond the Sword. None of the files it's looking for are installed in these required locations.

So uninstall and install in the games folder?

Okay I have set the BTS exe file to run as administrator and this appears to of removed the HOF error message. Does the fact i have installed buffy and bug in the wrong place matter??

Have you tried loading an old BOTM or SGOTM save file?

I have had problems in the past when BUFFY was installed in the Documents tree instead of in the Program Files tree. In my experience, it gave a "Protected Assets" error when I tried to load a xOTM start file. But maybe that was just my system ...

I loaded the PR save earlier and i got no messages. It appeared to look fine. I have not tried uploading a save to the server. I think Buffy is installed in the mods folder where I installed BTS. I set up a games folder instead of using the Program files folder to avoid issues with folder permissions,

I'm running Windows 7 with Steam BTS. I've installed BUFFY 3.19.003. I edited the ini file to pre-load the mod. It loads fine. The Asset Checker shows no errors with BtS.

When I start a new game with modified assets locked, I get these two errors on the settings page:

CRCs are missing. This game can't be used. Check Locked Modified Assets if unchecked

BUFFY must be installed to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\beyond the sword\Mods

Here is the path to the mod, copy-pasted from Windows Explorer: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\BUFFY-3.19.003

When I try to open a SGOTM or BOTM save, I get this error:

The save file you have selected requires the following mod to be loaded: Mods\BUFFY-3.19.003\ The application must restart, ok?

As normal, if I let it try to restart, Steam crashes the game (which is what Steam does anytime it needs to restart a game).

Any suggestions?

Just checking - Have you followed the instructions for running BUFFY/HoF mods in Windows Vista/Windows 7?
