Help with the Russian UHV

Gifting them techs, and lots of techs, works the best.

Voluntary vassals are the easiest to befriend all the way to Friendly. Capitulated vassals can get there too, but it takes more gifts. Non-vassals can be more challenging again, but it can be done.

What if there aren't five civs willing to become communist?

Actually, it's quite easy to get other civs to become communist- most will do it at pleased, some even at cautious. Just bribe them with a tech. The hard part is, of course, getting to friendly.

Vassals is by far the easiest way. They will adopt any civic you wish them to provided you gift them techs.

Adopt their favourite civic asap (F4 then Info screen to find out). You will get a progressively bigger bonus from "You have wisely chosen your civics" which should eventually make them friendly.

Obviously make sure to choose civs whose favourite civic won't stop them turning communist, and who actually have useful and stable civics. Also try to get ones who are the same religion and given them techs, liberate cities etc to push them over the threshold in 1950.

You should make sure you research rather than steal Communism, or you will not be able to give it away. I've had this problem before (I often play as Russia barely researching any techs myself at all - if it's on emperor) with vassals who are friendly but backwards in tech.

on emperor, i think its easier to achieve domination victory than go through all that trouble trying to get 5 friends.
Out of like 30+ games with russia, I dont think i have ever finished that UHV and I hate it

Tip: China is a good communist friend, because Mao takes over if you make them commies, and it's actually his favourite civic. Which makes him less likely to switch back, and he will love you back for being communist.

-Voluntary vassals are, as said already, best, as they are always friendly.
-Capitulated vassals can always be forced to change civics, but the -3 penalty from declaring war might make it impossible to make them friendly. However, if they declared war on you or if they have a friendly personality (Casimir, although that one's hard to capitulate without collapsing him) they're a possibility too.
-If friendly or pleased civs refuse to be bribed into communism, use spies.

Nope, it can still be done.

Yes, I know, but with 'might make it impossible' I meant 'makes it impossible' in some cases, where there are other penalties in play too (such as innate unfriendliness, refused to help, trading with worst enemies...) and 'does not make it impossible' in other cases.
