Monarch difficulty, protective civilization, yet...

BarbAttack0000.jpg

Yep, the barbarians sacked a HOLY CITY (high cultural defense) of a protective civilization thus eliminating the civilization from the game

This game was actually one of my better ones in awhile. Playing as Napoleon. I was able to settle 8 cities peacefully then wiped out Issy's 7 cities with catas/swords/axes. Sitting pretty now with 16 cities (including the barb capital  ) at ca. 1200AD. Just me and Bismarck now on the continent and I'm in search of the other continent. Just about to nab democracy off of liberalism as long as no one on the other continent beats me to it...:goodjob:

Isn't Byzantium Justinian? If so, he's spiritual/imperialistic, not protective. He probably got run over by the super early barb archer event. That event, if it triggers, will basically destroy the civ in question regardless of difficulty level.

There are those new "Barbarian Uprising" events. Spawning multiple barbarian units at the same time. I have seen up to 5 units Archers, Axemen, Spearmen or Swords.

In the game I am playing I had four (maybe five) barbarian horse archers against my combat I chariots (no copper, and waiting for border pop for iron). I got lucky and lost only one chariot.

Yeah, sorry, I got the civ wrong, I thought it was HRE, but they showed up on the other continent. Regardless, I was pretty amazed to see a holy city wiped out that early in the game. Those barb uprisings are pretty devastating.

Umm...I'm wondering if this is something that should've been patched???

I just finished the game (lateish domination win though I was just enjoying the game and taking a leisurely approach--I knew the game was over long before I tried to finish it off) and in the replay I saw that the barb assault was triggered at 3000BC and Justinian was wiped out at 2600BC!!! That seems really early for that kind of severe assault. It was a "massive barbarian uprising" or something like that and it devastated him. Frankly, I'm not sure players could handle that kind of assault that early.

Thoughts?

I have had that event occur, It basically means "game over" Unless you planned ahead and started with hunting and went straight for archery. Then whipped a bunch of archers. If you don't have mining, you will probably not get to BW, hook up copper AND whip a couple axemen by 3000bc

Yeah, I think it's pretty unfair tbh.

Yes, I think this needs to be fixed. I have seen this a few times. A couple times it has happened to me, and there was no way to stop it. And a few times it has happened where I see the message that so and so civ has been destroyed.

A couple games ago this happened right on my border. Usually they have just waltzed in and finished me off. This time though they walked off into the sunset, odd.

I've had a string of bad luck with barb uprisings lately.

I had one in 3500 BC...

I had one around 2000 BC... barely survived it, and it set me back centuries...

Last game they took out izzy, and then came for me. A horde of spearmen, and my only strategic resource was horses:mad:...

Barbarian uprisings suck if you're the target, if it happens early it is almost certainly game over.

Otherwise, they can lead interesting games -- i just recently had a game where Korea was wiped out early by barbs. Originally there were 4 civs located on this continent, but after Korea's demise there was sufficient rexing space for survivors for a long time.

Twice I've had barbarian uprisings wipe out my flegling civ in the first five minutes of the game. But the third time I had them spawn and I got the message that I was likely to take the brunt of their assault, they moved off south and eliminated pericles for me, so I guess it evens out in the end.

I had one where it didn't initially say they were after me, but sure enough, 4 Archers pre-2000 BC. Luckily, I was playing the Incas...

Getting Game over is just so fun...

It would be fine if the barbarians would go on to develop the empire, but at ca 1300 AD they still just had the capital and other spawned barb city. Losing out on a competitor just takes some of the difficulty out of things imo.

A fair few civs have been wiped out by barbarians in history though, I agree if you're not the target it can produce some interesting games but I think the event occurs a little too early.

Sometimes it can trigger right after one civ gets the technology meaning they've got 5 axes or whatever and you haven't even got bronze hooked up yet

Well, I think it is overly powerful and could be toned down a bit. But... you guys are acting as if it's a death sentence. I've had plenty, and it quite simply isn't. If it's early enough in the game, they won't even enter your borders. Beyond that, you can use terrain and city defence to your advantage, whip out warriors or in the worst case a settler, or even cede a city or two if you really have to...

Suffice to say I'm the type who usually plays with a warrior in each city (until HR comes along, anyway)... I've had several uprisings, and they've never come close to ending my game. In fact, I find the improvement- and building-destroying random events to be more annoying. The barbarian uprisings are just a little spice and challenge to add to the game... and if they do kill an AI civ, there are more where they came from. They shouldn't be a threat to a player.

The way I think it ought to be fixed is that if the Barbs capture an enemy Civ, they ought to try to use that city to attack the rest of the guys in the continent. Seeing a Barb city oughtn't be a situation for rejoicing.
