Hey! Give this Earth Map a Shot!

Everyone:

'Poly member (and apparent cartographer) Flash has put together a *gigantic* Earth map that works on Macintosh computers. He kindly gave me permission to link to the thread where the map can be found (it's on on page two of the thread in question):

Be warned: I'm not kidding when I say the map is huge. It registered at 2.7MB on Preview and does take some time to open (and this is on a current top-of-the-line Intel iMac w/all the works).

The map can be further refined by individual users, and I think he deliberately left out placing resources, etc., for that very reason. Also, there are a ton of forests, all of which are editable by the end user.

If you use it, be kind enough to let Flash know what you think!

i had to restart my iMac when loading the map . . . . the thing never ended loading.

Well, I did say it was a large file. What's your system specs, Nicci? Heh. At any rate, it took my machine, a 2GHZ, 2GB, 256MB VRAM Intel iMac, close to a minute to load the map.

P.S. I hope someone someday builds a map of the Northern Hemisphere. There's one out there for Civ II, but not for Civ IV.

i'm not complaining, but it was just too big.

Can't you just chop this one in half? It's just a big list of plots as I understand it, so if you adjust the dimension parameters in the XML, and delete the southern hemisphere plots you should have what you want, no?

Y'know, I never thought of it that way. Now you've got my neurons firing! I'm going to see if I can halve the map the next time I find the time to mess around with Civ IV.

P.S. Nicci ... yes, it's definitely a *huge* map. Biggest Civ map I've ever laid eyes on. It's creator (Flash) put a lot of work into it, he really did. Heh. I don't think his own computer can open it up quickly, either.

Loads of woods in China......It looks promising but am afraid it will slow to much down in the end..And its to much work adding all the bleeding resources....if anyone has a.......that would be great...

I'll give this a try. However, I bet the size is severely incompatible with the game system as implemented.
