Hikaro's Creation Thread

Aside from Renderosity, were do you get your props from? Are there any Korean props? I haven't come across any in my searches for them... I still don't know how to use Poser (since I haven't been using it all that much lately... :p ), but I will get around to it and intend to make some Korean units (such as the Iybyon and Koryo halberdier).

I get most of my stuff from Renderosity, DAZ-3D, Yamato, ISO, and Bat Labs' web pages as well as using Kinboat's and Utahjazz's poser stuff available here on this site (the Ranger's Quiver and arrows, the Naginata and the entire Chocobo knight are from the props and figures that kinboat so generously made available to us). Renderosity is one of the best places for free stuff, although the Japanese pages might have something close to what you need.

There's a reason why we Chinese call the spear the "King of Weapons". ;) I have some limited spear and staff training myself, though I'm not that good (of all weapons, I'm only mildly competent in the two-handed Zhanmadao variant of the Taijiquan broadsword style). :crazyeye:

Actuallly, the Naginata (長刀) is closer to the chinese polearm called the Quong Dao (長刀), and as a matter of fact, both weapons names are written with the same charachters, although if that statement is broadened to include all polearms, then I'd aggree. I've also been trained in the dual Kama technique, Sai, Nunchaku (single and dual), and while I was in Japan, I also learned some Battou Jutsu and Kusarigama techniques (interestingly enough from the same instructor, Saitoh sensei)... But my best weapons technique by far is the not-so-ancient art of Gun-Fu. I can put a string of 20 shots into a bullseye the size of a half-dollar at 50 yards with my 40-year old Enfield Bolt action rifle that only has standard open military sights (no scope).

Anyways, enough OT.... I got the run animation for the ranger done.

Preview; Go speed Ranger GOOOOO!!

Would you mind posting some of the Japanese sites? I'm not all that good in speaking, but I can read some Japanese. :) I've looked through Renderosity and I'm not all too impressed since a lot of the free stuff uses the cheesy stereotypes. :crazyeye: I still haven't found anything remotely Korean so I might have to improvise a bit. But then again, you can't really see all of the little details at the civ-level...

On a side note (a bit off topic :p ): That's "Chang" Dao, which has a bunch of variants (some closer to a standard Dao than a polearm). ;) The Naginata is in between Pudao and Guandao, which are sometimes classed as "Halberds" (which is a really broad term since that also includes the "Ji") which are sometimes classed along with spears (as some Changdao/Pudao/Guandao techniques can be utilized as spear techniques and vice-versa). It's just a matter of how you classify things and who you speak to on the matter. :)

Anyways, to get back on topic, how is the Naginata girl going? :)

Well, I saw 長刀 romanized as Quong Dao once..... The problem of transliterating Chinese to English is that there are about 30 different methods of romanization, and the only thing they have in common is that none of them spell the Chinese words even close to how they are actually pronounced. IIRC, 長刀 would be said as (spelled with American English default pronunciation) Tschong Doe....

Thankfully, Japanese is easy..... Naginata is pronounced Nahgeenahtah, and if you took at least one year of spanish in HS (like I did) it's even easier, since Japanese romanization uses Spanish Vowel pronunciation rules with English consonant rules.

Anyways, back on topic: I have updated the Naginata girl with the Hakama outfit, and made the Hakama and sleeve cuff trim civ-colored. I will post a pic soon, but for now I will post the results of yesterday's animation session.

Instead of working on the Ranger, I decided to try my animated texture theory and see if it would be possible to do Terra's transformation sequence... AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111one

Here's a preview of something that I believe has never been done with any civ III units: a unit that makes a full transformation during its fortify animation (and changes back for the victory).

Terra say's Morphing is fun!

VERY impressive, reminds me of aaglo's Phaseshark airship. I should try something like this, someday...

that is more than cool...very smooth transformation...

I'll admit I dont understand the unit...but I have a place for her in my mind when she is done

This unit (the Esperling) is based on Terra from Final Fantasy VI. Terra is half-human, half-Esper (a supernatural entity of great power), and she has the ability (once you discover the truth about her past) to temporarily change into Esper form, which doubles her physical attack (not the greatest even then) as well as her Magical attack (UBER-high powered). The reason I decided to make Esperlings as UU for the Returners is that several other main charachters who helped the Returners defeat Kefka are also descended from Espers. To whit, Strago Magus, Relm Arroway and their entire village. Even though their Esper blood is more diluted than Terra's, they still all have amazing supernatural powers (i.e. Strago can learn enemy magic once it's been cast on him, and Relm can summon a monster by sketching it in her notebook).

Anyways, here's the promised update to the Naginata girl.... Anyone have issues with the Civ coloration?

Oh...thats all you had to say...I get it now she is the one with the "Morph" power right?...and she turns into the Esper for the battle?...

even cooler than I thought now that I know who she is!!!

Arent Strago and Relm the Yellow/red father/daughter pair?...

in the end they find an "esper" world and bring them all back right?...In that game Ifrit/Shiva etc are Espers right?...(jogging my memory...is been a WHILE since I played that one...with Edgar(aka Gerad) and friends...

on a side note..remembering FF a bit more...you should have Barbarians be Cactars...and moogles should appear somewhere

@Hikaro: Actually, it depends on which dialect you are using. The standard Mandarin pronounciation is simply "chang dao." The Pinyin system is currently the most accepted, though some still use Wade-Giles (and some even use both systems interchangably, which makes things confusing... :crazyeye: ). And I'm aware of how easy Japanese is to pronounce compared to other Asian languages. I took it for three years (though I'm not good at it ;) ). Anyway, the Naginata girl looks good. Will that be the final version?

@Spacer: The summons in FF6 were "Espers" (Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh, etc.). Terra's father was Maudin (one of the summons and the Espers). Magic in the human world came from the Three Goddess statues, which Kefka takes control of.

Yeah, That will be the final version of the Naginata Girl.....

And about the Esper Statues, The summon Tech for FF VI civs (Returners & Vector Empire) is Espers, and will allow construction of a small wonder called "The Esper Statues" that will produce an Esper (can't decide on which one yet) every 10 turns or so. Similarly, the FF VII summon tech is Summon Materia, which allows construction of a Huge Materia small wonder that produces Bahamut every 10 turns or so.....

Okay, quick update: I'm almost finished with the Ranger girl. After several attempts an much hard work, I got the fortify and victory animations done. All that I have left to do is the Attack (fairly hard) and death (fairly easy) animations. That being the case, if all goes well, I could have the unit out tomorrow. Even better, with a few costume changes and re-texturing her hair to white, she'd make a perfect Viera Sniper (UU for Bervenia from FF TA), which I'll most likely release the day after (depends on how long my rendering times are).

Anways, here's the Fortify and victory previews:

After several Hours of pain in the rumpus work, I finally got the Ranger's attack animation done, and am rendering it out even now. Hopefully, I should have the unit finished later tonight.

Until then, since I'll be immediately making the Viera Sniper (since all I have to do is change some textures and clothing), I'm posting a preview here.

BUNNY! BUNNY! BUNNYYYYYYY!!!!! (Bunny Girls and Cat Girls are on the smae plane of Hotness) BUNNYYY!!
