Here is Phil De Vellis's confession:

Hi. I'm Phil. I did it. And I'm proud of it.

I made the "Vote Different" ad because I wanted to express my feelings about the Democratic primary, and because I wanted to show that an individual citizen can affect the process. There are thousands of other people who could have made this ad, and I guarantee that more ads like it--by people of all political persuasions--will follow.

This shows that the future of American politics rests in the hands of ordinary citizens.

The campaigns had no idea who made it--not the Obama campaign, not the Clinton campaign, nor any other campaign. I made the ad on a Sunday afternoon in my apartment using my personal equipment (a Mac and some software), uploaded it to YouTube, and sent links around to blogs.

The specific point of the ad was that Obama represents a new kind of politics, and that Senator Clinton's "conversation" is disingenuous. And the underlying point was that the old political machine no longer holds all the power.

Let me be clear: I am a proud Democrat, and I always have been. I support Senator Obama. I hope he wins the primary. (I recognize that this ad is not his style of politics.) I also believe that Senator Clinton is a great public servant, and if she should win the nomination, I would support her and wish her all the best.

I've resigned from my employer, Blue State Digital, an internet company that provides technology to several presidential campaigns, including Richardson's, Vilsack's, and -- full disclosure -- Obama's. The company had no idea that I'd created the ad, and neither did any of our clients. But I've decided to resign anyway so as not to harm them, even by implication.

This ad was not the first citizen ad, and it will not be the last. The game has changed.

Congrats if you voted for choice 1. I guess Phil is part of the VLWC.

kekeke PP got pwned by the truth!

Yep, it was Teh Lone Staffer after all.

It still got a pretty astroturfed treatment though :\

Undoubtedly. I wonder if he will dare show his face in this thread to admit it.

Unlike some, I'm willing to admit it when I screw up. :)

Don't feel too bad, PP -- you're right most of the time. :)

As I was going to say before I got to the end of the thread and found out the culprit, though, this ad seems like something to come from either an old-guard Republican (or collection thereof) or a really young (literally and/or politically) Democrat. The latter would likely miss the broader political implications of the ad, and just see it as calling out for rebellion against the perceived establishment candidate in favor of someone less obvious but better. "Don't be a sheep -- vote Obama", in other words.

That gets my vote for most silly statement of the week.

Again, I never got the impression it would come from a republican of any type as it serves them no purpose what-so-ever. But then again, I dont see conspiracy in every nook I come to.

Don't feel bad PP but maybe it will teach you to be more careful about your accusations.
Here's the important point to take home on this.

I think we need to get used to this type of viral marketing. It's a youtube world kids.
What needs to happen is open dialog and debate through this new youtube world.

I'll take Renata's endorsement over yours any day of the week, MobBoss. :)

I'm not sure the old media or the campaigns are ready for that. But then again, they never are :D

One of the problems with these new kinds of political media is that it's very easy for people to make a big stir in the national news without anybody checking up on who they are, what they want and who's behind them. With great power, etc. The people behind this ad very well COULD have been a swiftboat type group.

And you can bet your hiney that 2008 will involve some kind of repeat of the SwiftBoat fiasco, namely a shadowy group financed by party backroomers using new-media and astroturfing tactics to spread lies. It could as easily be the Democrats as the Republicans. The question is whether the media and the public will still eat up such lies unskeptically.

Well, duh. I never imagined you were masochistic enough to actually prefer negative opinion of yourself. We all have our supporters...and detractors.

Ah, very, very improbable. Especially at this stage of the game.

The swiftboat guys were neither shadowy, nor a bunch of 'backroomers' but Vietnam vets who directly had issues with Kerrys war record and experience. You may not understand it, but Kerry pissed off a TON of Vietnam vets by his congressional testimony that basically accused all of our troops of commiting war crimes. I personally think they were very well justified in their anger.

Again, not everything is a lie. People who served directly with Kerry on a daily basis had something to say, so they said it. Just like this guy with his Hillary video.

Also, not everyone eats up such lies either. Just ask Dan Rather.

Loyal, patriotic Americans simply trying to spread the truth? Are you suggesting the person behind this ad is corrupt in some way?

This ad isn't exactly dripping with factual content.

It's designed to create a visceral and unreasoning negative emotional reaction. In that respect, its use of 1984 is pretty ironic. It's just a 2-minutes hate.

Just because it "haets" on Hillary, and just because an Obama fan made it, doesn't mean I suddenly support it.

I would much rather there be a public debate on THE ISSUES than the personas (I use that word deliberately).

Well, duh. I never imagined you were masochistic enough to actually prefer negative opinion of yourself. We all have our supporters...and detractors.

No, I meant I have more respect for Renata than for you. Defending the SBVT just now kinda showed why

I dont care about your respect. /shrug. And I have a far different opinion about the SBVT because I am a soldier and I know full well what Kerry said and did about our Vietnam Vets. He deserves their feelings toward him. Again, the things you do have ramifications....if you dont like the ramifications of your actions maybe you shouldnt say or do things to piss people off.

Congrats if you voted for choice 1. I guess Phil is part of the VLWC.

Nope, Choice 2 is the winner. Choice 1 means Obama camp, choice 2 means renegade democrat.

I thought it was choice 2 when I first saw it because Obama has the Web 2.0 generation's near-unaminous support, and thus the technically savvy 23 year olds with the right equipment will be putting up ads in favor of Obama. Obama semi-endorsed it on Larry King, too, by praising the technical strengths and creativity of the video, though didn't outright support it. But it came across as "yes, young people, democratise the process and let the free for all begin. Make more"

However, I will suggest to Pontiuth Pilate (hey, where's that rediculous monster avatar with the giant mouth? I just remembered it) that while this may not be astroturf (did you make that up? It's brilliant), it will probably inspire a lot of astroturf later on.

did you make that up? It's brilliant

The American tradition of political BS is far older than I am :\

I don't know who pulled the first astroturf - although you could argue that the Boston Tea Party was an astroturf event, as many of the "ordinary, outraged citizens" who took part were in fact rich community leaders & future founding fathers! - but the name for it was originated by Sen. Bentsen D-TX back in teh 70-80s.

Are you suggesting that one being rich precludes them from being ordinary citizens?

A huge update to this story. Apparently there IS an Obama link in this. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,260902,00.html

Report: Anti-Clinton Ad Maker Lived With Obama Press Secretary
Saturday, March 24, 2007

Ad featuring Hillary Clinton
The maker of the chilling Hillary "1984" Web-site ad, which sparked a media feeding frenzy to find its creator after the initial anonymous posting, at one time lived with a member of Barack Obama’s staff, according to an Internet report.
A photo posted on Rawstory.com shows Ben LaBolt, Obama’s press secretary, with Philip de Vellis, the creator of the "1984" ad. The two lived together last year in Ohio while working on the successful Senate campaign of then Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, according to the news outlet.

Well, I guess those that voted 'Obama' are actually the winners here. That sly dog Obama using his proxies to do the dirty deed and close the gap. Maybe he is more politically savvy than we thought.

Fox News has fallen to a level of taking anonymous news stories from the web. That's a new low even I thought they couldn't fall to.

Would you prefer for me to get it off the AP, CNN or what? Come on, this isnt some 'anonymous' story with no basis in fact.

/sheesh.

How about you comment to it, for once, instead of bashing fox news in some lame attempt at misdirection?

http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Hillary_1984_ad_creator_lived_with_0323.html

Now tell me....if the two guys are in a picture together (the creator and Obama staffer) what does it mean when Obama says this: Obviously, as I said before we have no idea who this person was, we have no way of knowing who this person was,"

A lie maybe?

Oh..another oops:

Today, the Los Angeles Times also revealed that De Vellis had worked on software for the Obama campaign's website while still with Blue State Digital.

Yeah, I guess the LA times is also a neoconservative rag like Foxnews.
