Who would trash a candidate so early in the race? Someone who's always hated her.
Looks like you are wrong on this one...

Hi. I'm Phil. I did it. And I'm proud of it.
I made the "Vote Different" ad because I wanted to express my feelings about the Democratic primary, and because I wanted to show that an individual citizen can affect the process. There are thousands of other people who could have made this ad, and I guarantee that more ads like it--by people of all political persuasions--will follow.
This shows that the future of American politics rests in the hands of ordinary citizens.
The campaigns had no idea who made it--not the Obama campaign, not the Clinton campaign, nor any other campaign. I made the ad on a Sunday afternoon in my apartment using my personal equipment (a Mac and some software), uploaded it to YouTube, and sent links around to blogs.
The specific point of the ad was that Obama represents a new kind of politics, and that Senator Clinton's "conversation" is disingenuous. And the underlying point was that the old political machine no longer holds all the power.
Let me be clear: I am a proud Democrat, and I always have been. I support Senator Obama. I hope he wins the primary. (I recognize that this ad is not his style of politics.) I also believe that Senator Clinton is a great public servant, and if she should win the nomination, I would support her and wish her all the best.
I've resigned from my employer, Blue State Digital, an internet company that provides technology to several presidential campaigns, including Richardson's, Vilsack's, and -- full disclosure -- Obama's. The company had no idea that I'd created the ad, and neither did any of our clients. But I've decided to resign anyway so as not to harm them, even by implication.
This ad was not the first citizen ad, and it will not be the last. The game has changed.
kekeke PP got pwned by the truth!
Undoubtedly. I wonder if he will dare show his face in this thread to admit it.
Don't feel too bad, PP -- you're right most of the time.![]()
As I was going to say before I got to the end of the thread and found out the culprit, though, this ad seems like something to come from either an old-guard Republican (or collection thereof) or a really young (literally and/or politically) Democrat. The latter would likely miss the broader political implications of the ad, and just see it as calling out for rebellion against the perceived establishment candidate in favor of someone less obvious but better. "Don't be a sheep -- vote Obama", in other words.

What needs to happen is open dialog and debate through this new youtube world.Me said:I think we need to get used to this type of viral marketing. It's a youtube world kids.
That gets my vote for most silly statement of the week.

The people behind this ad very well COULD have been a swiftboat type group
I'll take Renata's endorsement over yours any day of the week, MobBoss.![]()
The people behind this ad very well COULD have been a swiftboat type group.
And you can bet your hiney that 2008 will involve some kind of repeat of the SwiftBoat fiasco, namely a shadowy group financed by party backroomers using new-media and astroturfing tactics to spread lies. It could as easily be the Democrats as the Republicans. The question is whether the media and the public will still eat up such lies unskeptically.
Loyal, patriotic Americans simply trying to spread the truth? Are you suggesting the person behind this ad is corrupt in some way?
Well, duh. I never imagined you were masochistic enough to actually prefer negative opinion of yourself. We all have our supporters...and detractors.
No, I meant I have more respect for Renata than for you. Defending the SBVT just now kinda showed why![]()
Here is Phil De Vellis's confession:
Congrats if you voted for choice 1. I guess Phil is part of the VLWC.
did you make that up? It's brilliant
The American tradition of political BS is far older than I am :\
I don't know who pulled the first astroturf - although you could argue that the Boston Tea Party was an astroturf event, as many of the "ordinary, outraged citizens" who took part were in fact rich community leaders & future founding fathers! - but the name for it was originated by Sen. Bentsen D-TX back in teh 70-80s.
Report: Anti-Clinton Ad Maker Lived With Obama Press Secretary

Ad featuring Hillary Clinton
The maker of the chilling Hillary "1984" Web-site ad, which sparked a media feeding frenzy to find its creator after the initial anonymous posting, at one time lived with a member of Barack Obama’s staff, according to an Internet report.
A photo posted on Rawstory.com shows Ben LaBolt, Obama’s press secretary, with Philip de Vellis, the creator of the "1984" ad. The two lived together last year in Ohio while working on the successful Senate campaign of then Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, according to the news outlet.
Well, I guess those that voted 'Obama' are actually the winners here. That sly dog Obama using his proxies to do the dirty deed and close the gap. Maybe he is more politically savvy than we thought.
Fox News has fallen to a level of taking anonymous news stories from the web. That's a new low even I thought they couldn't fall to.
Today, the Los Angeles Times also revealed that De Vellis had worked on software for the Obama campaign's website while still with Blue State Digital.
