China's empire still stands today; and had stood 2200 years ago as well. Spain's Empire OTOH.....Originally posted by kingbill555
Spain was the ONLY global power in the world in the 16th century, China was a regional power. At the height of Spain's power, its empire was larger than China's.

Nobody in the world can outfight the Mongol tumens of Genghis Khan at this time; the world is lucky that there's a China that's so rich, properous and huge that it drew off most of the Mongol forces for a generation. Or that it lies practically at Mongolia's doorsteps. It was simply one episode in the eternal war betw the pastoralists of the steppes and the agriculturists of China...The Chinese were conquered by the Mongols because the Chinese were weak militarily.
The Germans, Poles and Hungarians didn't exactly cover themselves with glory when they faced off a Mongol column which was doing recon in Eastern Europe. The Europeans and Arabs successfully fought off the Mongols.

The Mongols put an end to the Abbasid Caliphate. To the effect that Christendom was considering them as allies to fight against the Moslems.
All of Russia was conquered and ruled by what was known later as the Golden Horde...And the Russians fought them off too. MUCH of Russia remained unconquered.
