playing as Germany, I rushed to civil service for Landsknecht, then sent one out around exploring. It walked on to an ancient ruins, which then had the Upgrade Unit effect. This gave me a rifleman by turn 60. It can take out an entire city in 3 hits by itself.

Anyway, isn't this unfair? shouldn't they prevent medieval era units from getting that type of ruin?

It's a stupid mistake that the pikemen can not be upgraded into anything but a rifleman, maybe G&K can fill the gap there...

And well yes, it's pretty stupid to find a bunch of rifles in an ancient ruin.

Anyone else thought this was gonna be a posting from a spam bot due to the thread title?^^

Please can you post a screenshot? That would be fun to see!

Didn't get one that early, but I too have had the pikes-to-rifles promotion from ancient ruins. It's even stranger trying to work out where they get all the ammunition from to supply their ancient rifles...

I don't know, I agree that it's a strange promotion structure, but half the fun of exploring ruins has been getting weird and wonderful units at inappropriate points in the game. If anything it's a bit of a shame that Civ V does it so deterministically - you always get the next unit in your promotion chain (I have yet to discover what happens if a chariot archer gets that result from a ruin).

Yup. Back before a patch, you could also get more than one upgrade from huts for one unit (which you can no longer do), which was even more insane.

Also funny that ancient ruins have fully intact rifles.

I have allways thought the new world and north America especially magical,when I explore it with my cavalry. A deadly place where cavemen try to kill me and succeeds sometimes,and where one can find those magical iron horseTANKS. Usually u can explore the continent alone too,for a while. I do like a cavalryman with scouting. This on Terra setting..

Quitcher complaining. You hit the jackpot. Have fun with it.

Lancer -> Anti-Tank Gun.

Chariot Archers/War Chariots/War Elephants --> Knights
and
Pikemen/Landsknecht --> Rifleman

are kinda like the only realistically overpowered ones (not counting in custom maps that make the AIs not eliminate all ruins by the medieval at the very latest).

Alien ray guns.

I have guarded ruins found late just to try this, but it never paid off.

I might try building some explorer chariots.

I did get an archer to xbow last game around t35. Ottomans paid for peace the next turn.

They should not upgrade more than medieval units. Techs are even more restrictive, you can't discover a classical tech.

Exactly. I thought that this bug was sorted out in a big patch. Seems like they need to sort it out and restrict it to "up to medieval" unit upgrades. Although to be fair, it's extremely rare. I've never had that happen to me, or even seen the AI do it.

You have found your 'UFO'.

Have fun.

I wonder if anything upgrades to the Giant Death Robot?
