HOF Challenge Series I

I would find a game where I was trying to achieve a low score to be a major turn off. I believe I understand the concept to be to try to win a strong victory based on date of completion in which the player was extremely efficient and won with using lesser resources. By resources, I mean a smaller population, less technology, and fewer wonders to achieve the goal. I think the score is too quirky to play games to achieve high or low scores. I think to much "milking" is involved and gets away from what the game is really about.

I think the serie is fine as it is.
I'm not participating more because :
1) I'm not good enough
2) I have this obsession with empty tables
3) (Real) time is scarce

I don't think there is anything wrong with the way the points are counted, except that completing the challenge (meaning all 10 games) should give you some kind of bonus. 10 points should be enough. Or completing the challenge should give you some kind of other reward (like a medal or such a thing).

I think an always war game at emperor level is pretty hard. I don't think even the most talented players can win such a game without a rather big part of luck. This being said, the serie is challenging but not impossible, so I think it's well thought out. It will be hard to make it any better.
I like the idea of "minimum score" requirement, because it would push me on unknown terrain (I never milked except time victories). Why not maximum date, too?
Like a conquest in the BCs, or a space colony before 1800?
It would be a change anyway.

Nice going hhhawk. You are a machine!:goodjob:

hhhawk 60.0 #1 #1 #1 #1 #1 #1 - - - -

I will certainly be dissecting your games after the update!

I hope someone gives him a challenge, at least. The amazing thing is not the #1's across the board, but that almost all of those #1's are so far ahead of the next competitor that it is astonishing.

I'm not worthy. :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

Ok, here is a newbie question for you... I am having a hard time NOT getting a domination victory before completing the conquest, since half of a vassal's land and pop count as yours for purpose of a domination win. So how did you all avoid getting a domination victory while pursuing conquest?

Gift cities back to your vassals!

I don't mean to diminish hhhawk's achievement in placing 1st in all 6 games for which he has submissions. Although he is far ahead of 2nd place in Games #1, #3, and #5, he is only a few turns ahead of 2nd place in Games #2, #4 and #6.

In any case, hhhawk[/B0, congratulations on your string of Wins so far!

Note that killercane, cas and shulec could cause you some trouble in the remaining 4 Games. Also, WastinTime could easily Win most of these Games, especially Game 6, if he were inclined to continue competing in Challenge I.

Yeah, ok, I should have said "several" instead of "almost all".

I'm sure there are many players capable of contesting hhhawk's fine results if they choose to put in the effort. There's still two months left and my guess is that they won't all be standing when this is over.

Me, I'm just trying to get through the marathon. Erg... I hate marathons.

I thought if I slowly got close to completing all 10 (like 6-7 games), I might force myself to finish all 10. I'm only at 3 of 10, and my 4th game, 1390 AD space colony for I-09, didn't count because I used Liz instead of Victoria for my English opponent.

So, that stupid mistake was the last straw for me. I don't want to repeat the marathon space colony and some other games don't interest me. Looking forward to Challenge II.

It isn't a marathon. It is a gauntlet(1) of gauntlets(2). ;)

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:

(1) gauntlet (noun)
1 a : a double file of men facing each other and armed with clubs or other weapons with which to strike at an individual who is made to run between them —used with run
b : a line, series, or assemblage; especially : one that poses some sort of ordeal <a gauntlet of autograph-seekers>
2 : a severe trial : ordeal <ran the gauntlet of criticism and censure>

(2) gauntlet (noun)
1 : a glove worn with medieval armor to protect the hand
2 : any of various protective gloves used especially in industry
3 : an open challenge (as to combat) —used in phrases like throw down the gauntlet
4 : a dress glove extending above the wrist

I think kcd swede was referring to the inca game specifically, rather than calling the whole series a marathon :p

Yes, I was, though I was concious that it could be interpreted the other way, too.

;)

I quite like the way the scores are visible as soon as your game is accepted, makes a change from the not knowing in the gauntlets.

I've read the whole thread now, so here's my feedback.

I like it! It's a shame I've only recently been able to play civ again, I'll be unlikely to complete all the challenges (or even have a go at them). I probably won't be able to win some of the harder games anyway ;)

I'm also concentrating on filling my QM slots and the only ones that have civs I haven't used are the Hannibal one (finished) and the Mehmed one (I'll give this a try, after another try at the major gauntlet). Once I finish that (either this update or next update, looking likely next update now), I'll have a serious crack at the rest of the games.

I'm always asking for barbs on games so I like that they are required for the challenges.

Aggressive AI, I've only played once with this on (challenge #3), and it didn't seem to make much difference, in fact it may have been easier since Cyrus next door was Pleased all game (religion), and Boudica attacked and I wiped her out with maces and trebs. When I met the rest of the AI, they were fairly easy to get to pleased anyway.

Keep up the good work!

EDIT: Perhaps these games should count for major gauntlets in QM/EQM too?

...that we declare the first Hall of Fame Challenger Series done. No more submissions accepted as of today. Thus, with only two completing the challenge thus far... I have a silver medal assured.

OK... I see with Lowthercastle making some fine showings that the REAL competition is just getting underway. So here I sit like the New Zealand slolom skier who just completed his final run down the slope and ---by virtue of being the second finisher-- (well anology breaks down... unlike skiing I do not think this Challenge was seeded to put the worst first... ), I get to sit in the silver medalist chair for a very little while and watch and wait.

No, I'm not going to re-do any games to try to improve my times (though surely I could win a pre-nuclear conquest with sitting bull... couldn't I???? Maybe not  ). I have done what I set out to do... and far surpassed what I thought was possible. And I really think I got a lot better... I probably couldn't have completed this without doing so. That's what a challenge is supposed to be, right? So thank you Ozbenno and all who made game suggestions and everyone for their kind advices and friendly participations.

Now... I just have to watch out that I don't get too cocky about my improvements.

Note to self: don't get cocky. (too late). OK... try hard not to sound too cocky.
