1.61.5 is also broken for me.

I load the mod from the civ 4 advanced screen, and ask it to restart. It crashes on the restart, just after loading the rectangular civ flash screen. I get a standard "Blah has encountered a problem and needs to close" crash dialog. The error details indicate a crash in MSCVCR7.DLL IIRC.

Currently I'm using v 004 instead which works fine.

I can generate some logs if you need.

Sorry about this...

The map finder application crashes for me with a windows "Blah has encountered a problem" dialog. I have the same symptoms as Big Ben reports here:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=173850&page=9.

The error details are:
EventType : clr20r3 P1 : civ4_map_finder.exe P2 : 1.1.2398.31766
P3 : 44c7ff86 P4 : civ4_map_finder P5 : 1.1.2398.31766 P6 : 44c7ff86
P7 : 2 P8 : 0 P9 : system.nullreferenceexception

I looked for relevant ini files to check paths etc, and everything seems to be in order.

I couldn't find any links to earlier versions to compare and this is the first version I have tried - any chance of posting some (figured it wasn't worth trying beta 4 as Big Ben had the same problem with that)?

Shame as it looked like such a great utility.

Hm. There are no errors in any of the logs.

I made a mistake putting together the install. There is a CvGameCoreDLL.dll file in both the HOF-1.61.005 folder and the HOF-1.61.005\Assets folder. The one in the HOF-1.61.005 folder is the correct one. Try moving the one from HOF-1.61.005 folder to the HOF-1.61.005\Assets folder.

Note: this probably isn't the problem but it's worth a shot. ;)

Just a note for those using 005 already. As Denniz mentioned, there is a bug with the install placing the files in the wrong place. So, we're going to be releasing 006 real soon. Don't bother with 005 for now!

Are you using the one off the Mod web page? hof.civfanatics.net\civ4\mods\Civ4_Map_FinderV1.1_Setup.exe

That solved the problem. Works now

Denniz,

Thanks for such a quick reply.

I am indeed using the one from the link you posted. To make sure, I uninstalled, the downloaded the link from the one you posted, reinstalled and ran again. I get exactly the same symptoms.

Could you e-mail your HOF ini file to hof@civfanatics.net? Did you install the utility to the default location?

Hi Denniz,

I have emailed the relevant ini file.

The location I installed to was the default, as follows:
C:\Documents and Settings\Tom\My Documents\My Games\Civ4_Map_Finder

Thanks again.

I assume that the files and paths are all there. I am not sure what it is trying to find. Did you delete the HOF-1.61.005 folder? It looks for the highest numbered one.

Hi Denniz,

Yes, I deleted the 005 folder, restarted my computer, same problem. All the folders in the 0.004 ini file exist as far as I can see. I guess it's conceivable it could be parsing them wrongly. I did, as Big Ben did, get a different message the first time I ran it, something to do with folder location not being correct, and asking me to change it in the settings within civ4 IIRC. Does it imply because this is not happening that the folders must be correct?

Are you convinced the problem is related to finding files at startup? I may not have got exactly the same error as Big Ben, just similar symptoms I guess.

Perhaps I could I can log stuff to give you more info? Or try an earlier version?

Thanks again.

I am not sure what it is at this point. Did you change anything in the Civ4_Map_Finder folder(s)? Go ahead and download Version .006 of the HOF Mod and try starting the utility again. Please let me know what message you get.

The good news is that the .006 mod worked.

The map finder is clearly detecting the folders correctly. I tested this by tweaking the folder names, resaving the ini, then restarting the map finder app to test the effect.

I found that if any of the folders didn't exist, I got the "One or more folders wrong" message, followed by the crash dialog after I'd oked that one.

If I got all the folders right, it came straight up with the crash dialog (several seconds in).

The error contents seem the same either way, so it encounters the same problem regardless.

I'd speculate that if the map finder code exits straight after the (progamatically generated) "One or more folders wrong dialog", then the fact that I'm crashing at this point might indicate something to do with the wrong dlls or some other systemy problem. On the other hand if the map finder code carries on after this dialog, it's more likely be something in the code executed in initialisation somewhere after the file check dialog...

Other than the ini file all the dependencies run the other way between the VB and the Mod.

After getting the File/Paths from the ini, it proceeds to initialize the report screen.

1. create title with save path name
2. reads MF_Grid_Controls.dat
3. Creates the column headers using the Icons in the images folder
4. looks for files in the save path to create rows on the report.

It would throw a exception message if it couldn't read the controls file.

Are you sure you have .NET 2.0 Framework installed? Did you ever have the original VB 6.0 application working? You could try installing that to see if it works or if it's install corrects your problem.

Hi again Denniz,

I definitely have .net framework 2.0 installed. I installed it from a link posted together with the map finder - I know this because the first time I ran the map finder I got a message that was clearly related to missing .net framework, and which went away after I downloaded and installed it. I didn't install it using automatic updates - it wasn't listed for some reason.

I installed v1.0. It had to download some missing file, restart my pc, then the install went fine, and I'll be playing with it as soon as I've written this :)

I deleted the entire 1.1 directory and reinstalled again to make sure...still no luck.

Anyway, at least I can use 1.0 for now :)

Well that's something at least. Sorry for all the trouble.

I may have to create a special debug version to see what's happenning. I don't know why the application level error handling doesn't seem to work right. I will have to do some more research.

Denniz,

I'll do what you suggest re the files, might explain some glitches I was getting using 1.0 regularly.

What might be easiest for you re troubleshooting the issue is to sling the source code my way. I could then run it through the visual studio .net debugger. I've got an eval copy of VS.NET somewhere I've been meaning to install for a while, so this could give me the motivation to do it. I've also been told you can download a lite version of VS.NET for free.

I'm a competent enough programmer to either locate the problem for you or at least give you enough info about where/what is going wrong to hopefully diagnose it.

I'm quite busy at the moment, but should find time to do this at some point if you would like.
